It was a lovely, soft, balmy morning, with not a clond in the blue sky ; whilst the soft twitter of the woodland songsters made nature vocal with their rich gashing melody. We tried to respond to this most enchanting serenade by singing, “Come Birdie, Come,” .but broke down. Wo were pleased to note the thrift and general appearance of prosperity, that is so apparent, and which strikes the eye pleasantly along the entire route, to New I/ope. Fence comers clcanod out, briars, corn-stalks, and all kinds of rubbish piled up and ready to be re moved or committed to the flames, where they have not already been; the rich new earth freshly turned up In many places and ready to yield a good harvest to the steady, honest la- liorer; whilst the general appearances about farms and ont-hou^cs, by which it is so easy to judge of the character of the planter, gave cheering evidence of good management and industry di rected in the proper charnels. Ar riving at the Church, we found a large proportion of tlie best class of the cili- zeus, within a considerable area, gath ered together. Rev. T. II. Morgan, of Atlanta, de livered a very able discourse and was listened to with the most proronad at tention, whilst he demonstrated in his own forcible manner that “God’s ways arc not our ways”. For onQ hour the reverend gentleman held the large concourse spoil bound, by his masterly treatment of a theme, that gave full scope to his powers and eloquence after which, a recess of an hour was announced by tlie Rev.*James Bushin also the additional and very import ant fact that there were ample re freshments on the ground for nil, truth which was soon demonstrated by long rows of spotless white table linens uov«. Tho growing importance of the Sun day School enterprise, influenced the Baptist’s of this District to hold a spe cial meeting, for the purpose of gener al conference. Mr. Dcklc was appointed Moderator, and the Bov. Mi. Anderson, of Madi son, Fla., acted as Secretary. The first paper . .that was read, presented by our fellow townsman, Mr. Kendnck, who was introduced to the Convention by W. F. Hubert, Esq., of this place. This paper elicited considerable dis cussion, in ..which tho Kev. James Bushin, Rcfc- Mr. Chaudoin, and the Rev. T. II. Morgan, ot Atlanta, took part. Tho Botly having adjourned, and re-assembled, tho discussion was re sumed, and nn. interesting, as well as pleasant, day was spont in tho consid eration of .Sunday School matters. On Saturday the history of tho Sun day School movement was presented by the Rev. Mr. Morgan, who briefly noticed its more salient points. /L very good iccliug seems to have been produced, aud a conviction that, in Sunday School matters, it was nec essary to take a new departure. A resolution was unanimously adop ted, after the fullest discussion and consideration, in which the venerable Mr Lacy, and the Bov. Mr. Gauldcn. took part, asserting the importance of every member of flic Church becom ing a member of tho Sunday-School, with os many others as can be induced to attend, aud strenuously recommend ing that meetings of the Sunday School should be held every Sunday, whether the pastor of tho Church should be present or absent. After the usual resolutions of tlianks to the community, and the officers of the Convention, the body adjourned. In our first issue, we took occasion to direct the attention of tho planters to tlie splendid list of cash premiums, offered by the South Georgia Agricul tural and Mechanical Association.— Believing this subject to be one of the most vital interest to our whole sec tion, (to both town and country,) we feel that we would be dirclict m our duty, did we not again direct the at tention of these interested to these largo premiums, and ask the planters of Thomas county to pitch their crops accordingly. Not only do we appeal tG Thomas county, but surrounding counties also. We hope to sec com petition from Brooks, Lowndes, Deca tur, Mitchell, Dougherty and other couuties in Georgia, os well as from Leon, Jefferson, Gadsden and as many more counties, as our sister State of Florida will send up. These arc rich valuable premiums, and wc want to sec the competition for them lively.— Thomas is great in her resources, but if she don't be careful some of these prizes will go beyond her borders.— Now is the time to coi&uicucc to cure thatch/ dollar premium on best acre of cottou, or that hundred doWtrs for the best bale of cotton. If neglect it uow, you lose all chance of tlie premium as well as the happy consciousness of having encouraged a noble enterprise, in which all alike should be interested. Wc want to sec the bouo and sinew of tbo country aroused on this subject, white and col ored, f?r wc would have the colored people to know that there is no dis crimination, but that these valuable aiuouuts may be competed for by all. It will be found a profitable thing to meet together once a year and inter change views, and compare the pro ducts of the year's labor; you will rc turu borne better posted and with the pleasing reflection that jou are help ing to sustain an institution that has not only already reflected great credit upon your county, but bids fair to be one of tlie permanent institutions ot Soutli-wcst Georgia, if not already bo. Below will be found a few of the lead ing premiums offered, which will satis fy any that the. managers of our As sociation are determined to dj their part.
