Truly it may be said that * *' For ways tUat are «Urk .Ami tricks that are vain, Dealers In futures art j-ocnliar Futures were at tlojir highest pilch. They fairly gleamed with greenbacks. A dollar promised to he transformed into a ten speedily. A gold mine was nowhere. In the* midst of the excite ment a Pike county, Alabama, planter, well-to-do in the world, distinguished by hard common sense, wrote his fac tors to buy him five hundred hales of futures. The glow of tho coming day spread its glamour over him. lie, however, wisely added a postscript’ leaving it'to the discretion of his fac tors to buy tho amount at different times. They consulted aud bought him only one hundred bales. Then the dream of gold .vanished.— Tlic very next day the prices went down, and again they tumbled. Ten days elapsed, and the quotations con tinued down hill, when the i'aVmer wrote to sell out and that at once, and sooner if possible. It was done, and the good planter received liis account, showing that Ills little “spec” had cost him 8700 in ten day’s amusement. Taking the affair good humorodlv, believing those must dance who pay the piper, he thus writes his factors concerning his ten day's amusement : ‘•I received your notice ofsaln of my one hundred futures. Do make your charges as light as possible, as tuv race and disaster were so short and sudden, and my defeat so complete. I may try my luck again, but vuu may t assured I shall lake a good blow ortunately for me, sleeping, with them in the cabin—all tree of charge. -There is no law to regulate the hospitality ot steamboat captains, aud they generally find their white frienda to be quite as many ns they can afford lo accommodate with out charge. These attempts at forc ing social equality may as well l*c stopped. Nature trill have its course, and “blood will tell.” The Memphis Appeal of the 12* h inst., has a special from Jackson, Miss., to the following effcet: The eflcc& of the civil rights bill were shown last night. The Katie Putnam troupe opened at Angelo's Hall, and provision was made for a quadroon gallery, but several ordinary wards of the nation” saw fit to occu py near seats on the floor. Notice be ing taken ot them, they did uot enjoy their rights so much. Only one color ed citizen ot Jackson appeared for his rights: he is a small groccry-kccner. Tue barber shops have all succumbed to the bill with one exception, Juke ■Wonders, who swears lie won't shave niggers. 2’he balance of the shops have lost the best part of their while custom. The rates published in Miller Hinc- kle’s private boanling house for board per month, is two hundred and fitly dollars; per week, seventy-five dollars; per day, ten dollars; single meal, five dollars; ham and eggs, two dollars and fifty cents. Everything else in pro portion. No discount Cash iu ad vance. Two Mules Caught in the Flames of a Burning Field Two flue mules valued at about three hundred dollars, belonging to Mr. Jesse Walters of this county were horribly burned, ou Wednesday last. Their skins were burned lo a crisp, part of their longues were burned ofi. and their eyes were entirely destroyed. Duo of them will die, the other will probably recover. There could scarce ly be presented a more revolting spec tacle than the charred, quivering bod ies of tho living animals. It is im- .possible tor them to cat or drink, un less food and water he placed as far 1mCk in their mouths ns tneir baekjaw teeth. f\ I The injury to the* tables occui red la the accidental burning of the very lull gra^s on some enclosed land. The •grass had uot been, burued for years, and had accumulated in large quanti ties.
