KaxwelL THE,SAD PATE OP MONTE. A Dog Story with a Beautiful Moral. What a Glass of Beer Led To. From tho Indianapolis Herald.] There was no better behaved dog in the entire State of -Illinois than Bal lard’s “ Monte.” lie was young, hand some, intelligent, educated and of K 1 moral habits. lie was a high- set ter, with loug, soft hair, dark brown in color, tawny uuder the throat. Ilis eyes were soft and melt ing in their expression, his silken ears had the patrician droop, and his aris tocratic tail was eloquent in its ex pression of joy and affection, and rigid as an axc-haudlc when its owner came to a point. (Monte was a reasonable dog. You could always make him sec the point without the aid of the hunting whip.) As lor his nose— there never was such a nose hung to a dog before. 1/e could scent a quail across aTortv-acro field, and could re trieve anything but his reputation in the latter part of his career. lie would carry a dead bird half a mile and put it into ‘he wagon, and he never mouthed or mangled the game. 'When Ballard wan nervous or llustcr- cd, and missed a good shot, M'»nlc cheerfully came up to be licked with the ramrod, magnanimously taking all (he blame on himself, hut when anybody else of the parly missed a Wholesale Trade! Tins next morning Monte got up with a raging headache. He felt had. His hair pulled. Bn* he seems to have heard of the. drunkard's axiom—“the i liair ol the dog is good lhr the bite”— ami lie accordingly followed Ballard down town and “rungin” on him while he was taking his matutinal whisky and tansy. Ballard Mood treat, and .Monte, “hisled in” a glass of old slock ale. Several loalers thought it was funny to see a dog making a beast of himself, and so they invited poor Monte to take another until the upshot ol it wn* he went homo that night dnmker than ever. It got noised around town that Monto liked beer and everybody began to invite him.— The consequence was that he became R Sot. Even the fiees and bcnch-ic*s regarded him with pity that was more galling to his proud nature than con tempt. Finally the cad came.
