-aH*' w, THE TIMES JHO. B. 0HRI8TIAN, ) Editors JHO. TRIPLETT. f and Proprietors. THOMASVILLE, GA. Saturday, May 17,* - - 1873. To the Citizens of Thomas and Surrounding Counties. The general Committee in charge of the Grand Pic Nic, Horticultural, and Floral exhibition to come off nt cur Fair Grands, on the 30th, desires ns to say; that they will have every thing in complete readiness for the occasion. The Brass, and Sirin Brands will be engaged to play du ring the (lav. The grounds wHl be put in perfect order, and the extensive ex hibition buildings beautifully decora ted, by tl\c young ladies of the County. Thomasvillo will pay all the premi ums, and raise, money to defray all incidental expenses; so that our friends from this and surrounding counties, will not be asked to do anything but to come, bring their baskets, and enjoy one of (hose social re-unions, that knit together so firmly and kindly our people. No admission fee; no entry fee; everything free; so come along cvory-bo/ly bring whatever kind of a lunch you please, ami invite whomso ever you please to share it with you. Arrangements will ho made for spe cial trains from Albany, Camilla, Bainbridge, Cairo, Valdosta, Quitman and Boston. We hope parties will not confiue themselves to the vegetables lor which premiums arc offered only hut bring everything in the vegetable line. Tlsoinasi file Keeps Step with the other Cities of Georgia. As will be seen elsewhere the Thom as County Agricultural Society, have passed resolutions, endorsing the ac tum of Gov. Smith; and appointed delegates to attend the Convention on the goth. The following genlcmco will represent the Society, viz: J)r. I* A*. Bower and lion. M. C. Smith. Our municipal Government will al so he represeted by Mnj. II. II Harda way and lion. M. C. Smith. Whilst we are engaged, ami deeply interested in promoting the interests of our own immediate section, yet our liberal minded citizens, arc not restricted by geographical lines; hut arc always ready and willing to lend their aid, to any cause or scheme that promises good to Georgia. We send Rome of our best men to Atlanta, on the ‘JOth, foaling every assurance that tliciractions will look to the true in terest of the whole country. We hear tily endorse the condemnatory articles which have appeared in some of our exchanges, in reference to this lnuly discussing the politic*! situation. Pol itics is entirely foreign to the gather ing. The meeting is for higher and nobler aims; the amelioration of the condition of the farmers of the great Wot, ami the teemiug millions of the South. Thci-o ore great and good aims, let them he carried out. without the stench ot polities upon them. - — ♦ — — - C 'lieu p Transport at ion from the West. The Thomas Conlnty Aoitimri.T- ui:al Society Speaks—Col. Rai- foiids Land-locked Route En dorsed. TiiomasvillkGa., May 8th 1873. At ll*e regular Mouthly meeting of the Thomas County Agricultural As sociation held this day in Thomasville the following Preamble and Resolu tions were unanimously adapted. Whereas, The great demand, con stantly increasing, for Provisions from the Western and North Western States, to supply the wants of the Southern rollon growing States, and Whereas, the Bail Bonds of the Coun try are iiindcquate’to the 7Vansporta- lion of this immense aninuut of Provi sions without long delays and deten tions thus envying much loss and un certainty to the planters of the South. Therefore it is lit solved, That the demands and wants ot the planters of Georgia, can not he supplied by the present systems of Railways connecting the Southern Slates with the Groat Western Mar kets: That the wants and interests of Southern and Western farmers de mand other cheaper and more reliable outlets for the interchange of their Products. Hcsulced. That nothing, in our opin ion, will answer the wants of the Wes tern, North-western, Middle and Southern States so much as a proper ly devised system of Canals, that afford sale and cheap transportation for the products of these States to the Sen and the Gulf of Mexico. lie sol red, That, me deem the con struction of the Atlantic & Great Wes tern Canal and the Great Coast line, Inml-lockcd water way from New Or leans to the Atlantic O/caii as imlts- pcnsiblc to the interests and prosperi ty of the the Planters of the whole .State ol Georgia, and that we earnest ly appeal to our Senators and Repre sentatives in Congress, to bring before that body a bill to construct the abov named Canals, ami to co-operate with the Representatives of the Western. North-western, Middle and other Southern States iu the construction of such other Canals as will supply the necessities of their people. 1lesolced. That we heartily endorse and approve the effort of cur Gover nor James M. Smith iu briugiug this impot taut subject before the Gover nors and Farmers of the various States so deeply interested in these- great highways to the Sea, and wot him ns the Cceif Magistrate of our ■ great §tnte to coutinue ids efforts un til these outlets to the Sea are con nleted. JOHN G. DEKLE, Brest. W.D. M1TCI1 ELI), Sec., Protein. We place the Independent publish ed by J. C. Gallahci at Quitman on our Exchange list. The fust issue shows twenty four coluras of reading mutter. Very good tor the reader, But not so good for the publisher. The Independent shows that its en ergetic and talented Editor, means to run it on the high pressure plan. Our best wishes go with the new 'enterpriae. The Advantages of Thomasville We take, special pleasure la direct ing the attention of the public to the first of a series of letters, setting forth the advantages of the pine region of Georgia as a resort for invalids, from the pen of a gontlcmen, whoso stand ing in the profession, and whose ex tensive experience and long years of practice on the sea-coast and in Flori da, gives him peculiar* advantages in treating the subject There is no doubt but that if the great advantages of this section was thoroughly understood, and generally known, among the thousands who an nually crowd the Everglades ot Flori da, that hundreds of these visitors would spend several months of every year, in our beautiful and healthy in land city. The best medical authority on the two continents recommend us. Why then, may the question be asked, does not the tide of invalids turn in this direction ? We answer, in the first place, because the relative merits of different sections of the South is not properly, or generally, understood iu the North and West, from whence comes this annual army with hectic Hushed checks. They imagine one section of ttic South will do as well as another ; when the ablest physicians this and other lands concur in the opinion that, for all kinds of Bronchial and Pulmonary diseases, the Pine re gion of Georgia is without a rival. In the sccoud place, the absence of prop er accommodations. ^ As a class, the northerner who comes .South to spend his Winters it accustomed to every comfort and con venience at honi2, and they have a right to expect the same wheu coming S'outli and paying liberal board. So if w r c would have these people stop in our midst, we must not only set forth the climatic superiority ot this section, but offer hotel accommodations equal to any in Florida ; then we may reap the harvest, but not until then. The first, we shall attempt to do ; whilst the latter, will certainly be complishcd next year. With our nour ishing schools; our Railroad connex ions; our natural advantages aud our thoroughly live and go-ahead place and people, the future of Thomasville wears, indeed, a rosy hue. Oppression. '1 lie people of Louisiana must he driven to the wall indeed, and suffer ing such throes of social and political evil, as no people have ever borne, to he •.*. filing to bow their necks to the yoke which the Radical Part}', in its inhuman ficndislincss, is fastening on the citizens o! that State. Rather than hear with their present ills, they are willing to be put under martial law, or any other law, to get out of the clutch- oftho Kellogg Government. The following from the “New Orleans Tillies’* will explain: “To he saved from plunder and lo- al oppression would lie so great a blessing that the tax-payors of Louisi ana would hail with hearty welcome th« bund that delivered them, even if it held a sword and were covered with a mailed gnuntltft. Their present rule : • doubly intolerable, for it means nt ice confiscation and degradation. They cannot, bear it, and, unless by some adjustment it is rendered more tolerable, the Modoe parallel will he epeated in many of our interior par- shes. Such conflicts may he prevent 'd by the federal soldier}', hut not by the metropolitan brigade or any State militia that can he raised.” A Day with Our Georgia Ex changes. Bishop Gross has been installed ns Bishop of the Diocese of Savannah. Should u fair day occur during the season, the Sunday School children of Macon will have a J’ic Nic. They have been dressed and waiting for a week to hear the ringing of the bells announcing a patch of clear sky. Waycioss, the growing town nt the crossing of the A. & G. Rail Road, and the A. A B. Road, has been selected ns the county seat of Ware. Now move No. J* down. The Editor ol the “Blackshcar Geor gian; insists on the ieslive lleas ot that burg, being excluded from his virtuous couch. If those lleas should get hold of him, they will he apt to vote themselves some buck pay. The following according to the “West Point News,” is the way the festive newspaper cuss, puts it to the men of hash iu Atlanta: Sir, bring forth some buttered toast Some ham, eggs and tea; A nice beefsteaK and surloin roast. Aud charge the same to me. The strangest part of the affair that it should have been charged at all to a man with a stub of a pencil, grace fully reclining above the left ear whilst a note book’and a wild haggard hun gry look, all indicated the fourth es tate. Hawkins of the Covington Enter prise. has been to Madison; overcome by his feelings he “slings* 1 oil* the fol lowing: “Fro*h i«the mao with it* dew «I-np of i>eari. But hi the'presence ofVbJuutifuf MuJi'nm girl Unwin is the lilly, unheeded the nwe." He threatens to call again when he has more tnonev. Unless lie has got a uew dodge uukuowti to the fraterni ty, Madison will be exempt from liis reckless expenditure of greenback: for sonic time. A mar who cannot set type, work press and do things needful to be done iu a printing office, all day, aud then read papers and write editorials until twelve o’clock at night, had better be doing something else besides publish ing a country paper. But then, hav ing done all this, week alter week, to receive a message from a subscriber who is two years in arrears to “stop my paper/’ without paying up, is euough to make a preacher do some thing else besides pray. If you donjt believe it, try it. Fleming, of the Early Couuty News, puts it io the foregoing pathetic style He has evidently been there, and yet he doer not seem to be happy. The same paper relates an incident, that must have been very liarrowin; to the Coroner. All the fault of the shot gun. Won't the Juries of some County lead off, in recommending higher standard lor shot-guns and pocket-pistols. It has got to tbit pitch, that some honest coroner is reg ularly swindled every week. The Eatonton Messenger publishes a very feelincr obUnary of Charley, a well known dray horse of that town.' Cause of death over feed. You will never hear of a country Editor drop ping his quill from the same cansc; unless it may be just after blackberries are ripe, or some other stuff that grows wild. 9 . The “kiss if you dare” syle ot bon net is the latest We are keeping a sharp lookout for the first one that makes its appear ance on Jackson St The corner stone of the mariners home, was laid with imposing ceremo nies on the 9th in’st, at Savannah. Cpies of the following papers were de- jiosited in a box beneath the Stone, viz; The Thomasville Times, Morn ing News and Advertiser. Some one has written a poem, enti tled, “The Railway to Heaven.” We kpow of a good many who have star ted bnt got off the track, before get ting to the first Station. The sprightly local of the “Georgia Enterprise,” puts our teeth on edge thualy: 6omc of the young ladles in Coving ton are taking lessons in wax-work. Their attempt at manufacturing artifi cial fruit makes a man feel uneasy and hungry as he views the perfectness of its beauty aud natural appearance. We can nearly taste those peaches.ap- ples, grapes and pears, now. With only ouc exception, tbeic is no place on earth where a gentleman could find a belter life-time companion than here. May the Lord bless the female poriiou of Covington by sections. Of course his exception refers to Thomasville. Thank you Hawkins we will show you round whenever you come to T . Martin of the ‘Home Journal ” moves upon the sympathies and feel ings of his subscribers, by heading at article “A child lost in the woods.’ Under which startling announcement, he gives dcliuquents teu days to walk up to the Captains office and settle. We hope that IJarris will apologize to Mr. Haskins of Houston, for callin' the champion Radical Jury organizer after him. We cant imagiuc what spile lie can have against Mr. Ilaskius who from all accounts is a very res pectable gentleman. IJarris is not naturally vicious, and we doubt not when lie realizes the enormity of the offeuce, that lie will make the amende honorable. Piedmont 5 Arlington LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY.
