the tablecloth straightened, and she
was in the act of giving her-hair a few
smoothing brushes, when a low tap
sounded ou the oaken door. She
paused a moment, to get over the flut

turn came next, and ho was a harder
customer; but lie was at last reduced
io a system, and Cousin Jenny sur
veyed her work with much satisfac
tion.
‘Why, you arc almost good-looking,
Dick, with that clean jacket and ruffle
on. Why can’t you keep Yourself so
five minutes? Then mother wonld
take courage, and flx you up every nf-
ought to be enough for any reasonable
boy. In the afternoon you might find
out some play that would not soil your
clothes. Then you would be fit to be
seen if any one called, and vou would
learn luvbits of neatness. Don’t you
feci better to be dressed up?*
,Why yes, Jenny, I would rather
look decent any day; but tho
jackets look so like time, 1 don’t care
about keeping them clean. Xow you
see if I spoil this one to-day!’
The call was over soon, and the
children catuc down Mails looking s
fresh and tidy that it suggested to
mother the propriety of changing her
own apparel ‘before anyone else should
happen in.’ So, after putting the room
aud kitchen to rights, and inakin
little preparation for tea. she w
away aud slipped on a nice dark de
laine dress with narrow ruffles about
the sleeve and neck, and fastened at
the throat with a ucal pin she seldom
wore now-a-days. She was quite
pleased with her reflection iu the dres
sing-glass, as she smoothed the glossy
brown hair, which had not yet a thread
of silver.
*1 might ns well dress up every day,’
she thought, ‘if it was not so much
trouble.’
The children looked pleased, and
behaved better than they had for
ninny an afternoon; they alwny.
seemed to get to boisterous towards
night, the poor motbei said, ‘she could
not bear herself think.’
Won’t you wear this dress
day. mama,’ said little Lolly, patting
and smoothing it with evident admir
ation.
The children were engaged in some
pleasant game which Jenny had taught
them, when father returned with a
brother-in-law from the city, who had
come down by the evening train. It
wns unexpected, and it was with
many misgivings he invited him to his
home. He had some forebodings with
regard to the report he would be likely
to carry back to sister Louisa. His
surprise and pleasure made bis whole
lace glow when lie saw the unwonted
order displayed, and the quick eyes of
the wife welt not slow to observe
and comprehend bis satisfaction. It
brought an answering tide of happi
ness into her own heart, and the ex
cellent supper was quickly on the
table. Whatever other apitointmeats
about the bouse were not what they
should he, tlic meals were always Weli-
propared and ucatly served. Her
Knives were the brightest, her linen
the whitest, her china the most spot
less, and her food was never cooked
too much or too little. Indeed, she
made herself a needless slave to her
kitchen, neglecting other pursuits
which she had once had n taste for,
nud, quite as bad, neglecting her per
son and that of her children. Now
the little people felt the responsibility
ot clean clothes, and were more
thoughtful aud silent than common—
*a very good failing’ for children at
. the table. They wcut to bed after tea,
according to custom, after rejoicing
over the pretty presents their city
cousins had scut them, and obtaining
permission to carry them up to bed.—
They discoursed with Jenny sometime*
ns to what present they could send
baek in return, and she concluded that
a basket of fine rosy apples would be
as acceptable ns any anything, and
piuch pleased with the idea, they fell
.asleep. - *—
A very delightful evening the elders
spent in the parlor, the Indy feeling at
case because she felt her appeal aura
was respectable, and she had given her
husband pleasure by the pains she bad
taken. All were in good spirits, and
when the brother-in-law returned, he
gave Lis wife a glowing account of
how fh'.ely George lived, away down
there in the country, with such a nice,
tidy wife, and healthy, well-behaved
children.
The mother thought much over the
simple events of the day, and her eyes
were opened as they never were be
fore, to sec what a blessing order and
neatness brings. She had seen the
worried, unsatisfied look on her bus-
band's face so often, even before bis
well-ordered table, and had been at a
loss to account for it, and now her
eves were suddenly opened, aud she
wondered how they could ever have
been so blind. She resolved to turn
9ver a uew leaf, and she did it, and
yns sui prised to find how much more
harmoniously the wheels , moved on.
Tlic childrcu respected 'themselves
more in # cleau clothes, as all children
do.nm! a greater fondness for civilizing,
refining pursuits, gradually made its
appearance. .
■Simple dresses and jackets, nicely
ironed and trimmed aith an irexpeu-
$ivu while rutile about the* neck, are
great civilizing agents, besides great
promoters of happiness. If you doubt,
just try the experiment.
