Although you thought your winter
severe lor your latitude, compared with
this place, it was mild, as the month
of May thus far has been about zn av
ge of your winter, even April beiuj
colder. You have a delightful winter
climate, which together with your heal
hy region, good society, ana cheap
and, makes Thomasville a very desi
rable place of residence, for any oue
to escape the long, cold te
dious winters, of the north. One of
r druggist told me that the water
i so near chemically pure, it needed
distillation for their uses, where
the pure water was indispeusable.
By a letter from Kev. McKee lie in

health hy his winter’s residence with
you, that he lias bought property and
intends becoming a citizen, of your
lowu next October.
I am often enquired of about Thoni-

favorably, if your new hotel was
completed which some of y
need of so much, it would be a still
further inducement, to make yours

sum up, you have a mild, healthful cli

Last week during our visit to the
[rowing city of Quitman, we had the
pleasure of going through the factory,
and as wc promised, will say something
ot it In company with the Kev. S. S.
Sweet, who added much to the iuterest
of the iuspection, by his thorough ac
quaintance with its workings, we
met the clevei and polite book keeper,
Mr., Pierpont. to whom, we are in
debted for his kind aud courteous at
tentions in showing us through.
First, we started at the heart of the
whole thing, the engine, this we found
to be an uncommonly pretty piece of
machinery, and at once attracted our
attention by its noiseless aud easy
motion. So we were at once impress
ed at the beginning of our observatiou v
quite favorably towards the enterpris
aud good judgment of the directors
aud president of the creditable institu
tion. Next we commenced with the
cotton as it is unbaled and followed it
through the various machines until it,
from a large roll of cotton, comes out
a small thread. It is interesting no
matter how often,seen. We found
every department in the best order,
the rooms neat, clean and superior in
ventilation, it appeared, to any facto-
c ever saw. The machines are
all of the best make, and arc kept in
iplendid order; the operatives, wc
judge, must be old hands, for they
k not like new ones. On the whole
this is a creditable institution, and
speaks volumes of praise for the en
terprise of the people of Quitman.—
As a rhristinn we could not “covet our
neighbors property,” but really we
could not help feeling a little cuvious
of Quitman, in the possession of such
valuable enterprise, and wc should not
wish wc had that one here, but wc do
wish, we had one as good in Thomas-
ville. And we think, in fact, that eve
ry county, almost, in Georgia should
have one. No enterprise pays a bet
ter dividend, which is enough in its
favor; but there . arc many oth
er as good argument. It* keeps
thousands of dollats at home
which is circulated daily in the com
munity.—There is where it pays the
public iu the place where it is located,
bpt not the only way. But these
points arc too plain to need repeating.
So if we will not build one in Thomas-
ville let us encourage our neighbors as
they deserve.
The building wc foigot to speak of.
It is a handsome structure, well built
(of brick) and very conveniently ar
ranged. It is three stories high, or at
least two and a halt, and shows off
quite handsomely.
Let us h;.vc one here; a factory and
stood hotel is all wc need to give us a
our friend Mq). B among them,
to say whether or not after examining
these grounds. If they are not letter
adapted for a park, than any grounds,
that are at all accessible to the citizens
oi the place. Thisplace is more central
ly located than any like area In the
town. It would make the College and
college grounds more attractive, if a
well ordered park was laid off and
maintained near them, and would fa
vorably impress tlic patrons of the
school.
Our ideas arc pretty well up in the
pictures, about Thomasville and its fu
ture (as our readers know) but our
neighbor goes ahead of us on that 25
acres. In our well known modesty,
we thought if the city fathers would go
to work, and improve a park of 10 or
l'Aacres, and beautify it as they can,
that we would be satisfied. This would
give us a park equal to, or larger than
Savannah. The entire question, will
doubtless be disposed of satisfactorily
to the majority of the public, as the
Council have appointed a committee,
to confer with the proper representa
tives of the College.
To be equally as generous as our
neighbor, we will advocate a park on
any grounds that the proper author- j
ities may designate; at the same time j
we are perfectly satisfied, that the 1
grounds of which wc have spoken, are W I J£J'?.° , ‘ ene,,fortllc

Northern men coming South, do not
want to get iuto a political pandemo

Carolina, unless they arc piotcssional
ofiicc hunters, and such we *do uot
want in Georgia. No, they prefer com
ing to a State where peace and quiet
reigns, although it may be under Dem
ocratic government, and such a place
do they (andwill) find iu Georgia. The
upper part of the Stale approximates
to near their own inclement dime,
whilst Middle Georgia it; not 1'nr

and it is certainly a reasonable oue is,
that persons who propose seeking
homes in our soft sunny clime, at least
a great many of then, will naturally,
gravitate to .South West Georgia.
It is a patent fact.even to thccasual

THAT PARK.
Wc are pleased to learn from our
neighbor of the Enterprise, that, “The
Park sensation gains ground aud
friends as light is thrown upon its fea
sibility.” We do not know upon what
authority however, the assertion
made, “that there is no hope for a city
park on the grounds attqchedto Young
College,” to which grounds we first
called the attention of the public in this
connection. Wc are inclined to think,
that the wish with our neighbor, is fa
ther to the thought. Let us see how the
case stands. The trustees of the Col
lege in purchasing the building on
Dawson St. for college puiposes, had
to buy twenty three acres of land, a
large portion of it, lying beyond the
bj-ook that runt through the woodland,
several hundred yards in rear of the
College ; and entirely detached from
iL Now we have no idea, that it has
ever occurred to any of the Hoard, to
beautify and improve all this exten
sive track. If the College authorities
cun adorn, and emt/.elish, say ten acres,
it will give them al>out twice- as much
grounds, as is usually allotted, to col
leges, and we think -there is but
liltlo hazard in saying that ten acres
is as much if uot more, than they care
to improve «vi> lun this and the next
