This is fourth of July week, an notice that a number of the papers arc keeping up an old custom of tak ing holiday this week, hut wc will not avail ourselves of it, and wait for Christinas. Ci UK AT INDUCEMENTS TO Pt’K- ctiaskrs.—As Uic season is drawing to a close, wc shall offer Dry Goods and everything else in our line at re duced prices. I.ndics and gentlemen nic invited to call and convince them selves. Very Respectfully, I. LEW. Tate Springs.—'This popular re sort, through the Times, invites those seeking health or pleasure, to go there. It is one of the finest water ing places in Tennessee, and as val uable to the nlllictcd. Read their ad vertisement. Beets.—Chastain says lie has got a beet that beats auy beet yet, exhibited in these parts, it is a seveu pounder. Wc can beat that beef all hoilow.— W e have one in our office every week, miost, which weighs over a hundred pounds, but its a (lend b-c-n-t. Our dorgs will soon he struting around with new collars on, as they have airived. We'll bet a soda ticket (one of Kottman’s) that there arc four times as many dogs here as iu any place of its size iu seven States. Kill ninety-nine per cent of them, then plen ty would be left. Cholera.—Although a great ex citement prevails in Atlanta, it is pos itively, and wc suppose authoritatively dcuiod that any has been or is there. Also it is on the decrease in Nash ville and Chattanooga. A little good weather it is thought will dispell it all. The friends and patrons of Messrs Taglor & Ladson will hud them in their new store opposite the Ti>h:s Office, on Jacckson street, after the first of next week. They expect to move Monday or Tucitjay iu order to make room for one ol our burnt out firms. As wc expected, we missed a rare treat by not being able to renraiu to the closing exercises ot Fletcher Insti tute, for we learn that they were bet ter than has ever been witnessed there. Wc congratulate Prof. Moody on the favorable impression made, and, by the way, we fully agree with our neighbor, in the suggestion that his claims for a position In the new Institution, as a teacher should he first considered, and hopo they mav favorably. ; Small Business.—Somo petty thief went down to the bathing house the other night, tore off a plank, and stole the looking-glass, comb and brush, towels, and everything in reach. They drd not go in, but reached through the hole." It is a wonder they didn't get in and steal a bath, A Firf. Incident.—After the fire, Tuesday morning seme nogrocs cleared away the trash and ashes, from where Mr. Koltman’s store stood and in a cellar got a keg of lager beer and a large piece of icc. The ice was saved by the trash covering it up we suppo se. They took it arround to Prcvatt’s to get him to open it, hut on knocking out the hung found that the beat had destroyed the gass, and they said it wern’t good hut beat no lager to death. Fire, Fire—and keep firing, but Thompson's mill will keep grind; nevertheless. lie makes such good meal that uegroes rather have it than biscuit, and one tried to break in the other night] to get some of it, but. he had heard so much of the reputation of 1 homson’s mill, lie naturally con cluded it was a large house, and mis took the machine shop for the mill, and didn't get any. But really Lutiicr knows how to wake good meal, and ;lad to sec him meeting with so much success. SiTRiT.s.-r-Ourdevil lias discover©i ■pints in our composing room, (not in a liottle.) He says that type occasion ally will drop from sonic unknown parts into l»is case, and always go in the right box. They are all mystified, but perfectly satisfied ns long as it puts them in the right place, but if it didn’t our lore-man would kick (up) the de vil. We don’t know whether it is an evil or good spirit, hut it is partial to the devil, and judging from that, il must be the former. Wc don’t Kke spirits, (only like Chastain had at the bathing house) and want them to steer :lcar of us. We are sorry to learn that the Nep- tunes lost all of their furniture, in their Hall; this is a had lick for tin-in, and a purse should he up to get, them more. They need sonic ac knowledgements at the hau ls of the people for their gallant services the ght and this is an opportune time to give it. Also another of our pet institutions, the hand, are minis most of their mat ru- ments; but wc hope they will he repla ced very soon. The ladies feel an in terest here, and wc know they cry soou he in tooting order a May it ever ho the horns that arc lost, hut you hoys never. Wc had a call yestei day from Mr. Itobl. Cobb, of ylmcricus, a contractor and builder, who comes down he can get n~joh in building up the burnt district. He is a fine practical workman, as good as can he had any where, and specimens of his skill, in this line arc scattered all over South west Georgia. Most of the buildings of Amcricusshow what he is. Too. lie is an honorable, refined gentleman, wc have known him personally for years, and can vouch lor that. He brings a letter horn the Mayor of Amcricus, which speaks in the highest terms of him as a gentleman and skill ful workman. Mr. Bell, the polito agent of die Ruck Eye Bee Hive, which is a i or- fetft modern wouder iu the lice h.vc line, has hecu in the city for s« me da>s. He has sold several hives, :.nd it is a show to sec him transfer die bees, the perfect controll he has over them, ami the familiar way in which they occupy their new home; it is so appropriately arranged, they feel at home at once. It is a complete thing. The bee will never be destiovcd by moths or worms, font contains a i cr- fcct trap, by which all such ate cam hi. -crtainly a good thing, am. it would pay any body having bets, to buy them. lie is selling family rights to use and make them and the gems anted. A fire! the word carries a fearful dread, at all times, and few hut the business men, awaken ed at midnight by the cry, can realize its real effect. Thi? morning at al>out 3 o’clock, tlie alarm was given, and the fire discovered to he already pretty well under beudw iy, between Ilirts* shoe shop, end Kottman's store, both wood bn'Mings. And timo the could get there, they were very prompt too in turning out, the flames had spread very rapidly and it was at once evident that the four one- stoiv wood buildings would burn.— Eaf t of these was Messrs. Hardaway McKinnon & Co’s, two-fctory brick building which ha 1 a good fire-proof wall, and was con idered in but little danger. Wes. of them, was a two- stoiy brick lio :*c, ot A. & It. Smith, which had a dead wall, and it was thought that although the fire was very hot, the largest wood house being next to it, and it not being as high as the one on the cast, it might be saved. Wc arrive d on the ground nl halt'past 3 o’clock, when it had not reached Smith’s House, hut it soon did. and Chief McLean promptly saw where tins danger was, and put the Xcptuncs und- r Lie Foreman, Col. While with the vigi lant.? he went to thp rear, :.nd played a stream on the east side, next to Hardaway', M< Kin non & (.Vs. which woil^cd very nicely, both companies, doing good service and telling finely on the mad flames as they hungrily licked the fast becoming l.ot wall of Smith’s IIous -, and at four o’clock, we noted the hour for wc cousiderei \\ the close <». danger, and another valuable evid* nee of the worth and personal gallantry’ of our chief and the whole department. At that time we say we were sure the worst was done. But alas, for our liopis; about this time, by some luisiindei'standin; fatal mistake was made, by the Xep- tuues withdraw ing their tclliug slrc-an to the small brick house adjoinin Hardaway, JieK. & Co's, when *ho (lames m tbc : r seeming mad fury caching for ci cry opportunity, gninct m the gallant boy:, here, and it wa- oou evident, from the cloulns ol‘smoke lowly oozing from tin- windows up tairs in Smith’s House, that the lost ground could i ot 1 regained. Telegraph office is now located at the depot, but as soon as arrange ments cau be made will move back up tow’u Mr. K. T. McLean tendered his rcs- ;nation, as chief of tho Fire Depart incut at the last Council meeting.— Wc regret exceedingly to sco this, for this responsible office never has, nor will he filled by a more worthy and cllicicut man, and lus loss will be felL All hough we have known him hut a short time, and seen him in hut ouc fire, wc saw enough then to con vince us that he was the right man for the place. We never saw a man cupving the responsible position, ouc which all eyes, at dangerous times, arc auxiously and earnestly directed, and are subject lo so many sugges tion. and afterwards criticism, ‘wc say wc never saw a man cooler, deliberately familiar with his duty, aud execute it better, Ilian lie did in our late lire; and Thomasville never saw a belter chance, for a man to show his efficiency and calmness amidst confusion. This i* the great est quality that a good fireman should ; he may be ever so anxious and willing, but at the same time, if in command, be dangerous, if he does not possess this essential quality. Wc hope Mr. McLean’s place may be filled with the next best we will not get any better. An interesting letter appears else where from our Correspondent “Lyde 1 who has taken himself from tlig“Land of Flowers” to the Mountains of East Tcuucssec. We hope that he will paint with his facile pen for the bene fit of our readers the'’beauties Mountain and Vale that mark that picturesque land. We commend him to any of our lady friends in East Tennessee who would not be averse to exchanging mountain and glen hill tep and valley for.the soft balmy at mosphere of the South, and a homo on the St. Johns. Improvements —We notice sever al new dwellings being erected. Mr. Rushing is building Ja splcndidjhouse on the lot adjoining his residence. Mr. Thompson is building on the lot in frout of Judge Alexander’s, and oth ers will bo commenced soon. This is exactly what Thomasville needs very ba«I. We don’t suppose an empty dwelling house could be had in the City now, Wc need more bouses to rent out, aud capitalist who have lauds, in the city on which they are receiving no income, but paying tax, wc -Uould think would build houses. Wc think they would always he in de mand, and certainly nothing pay better per cent, on money. Personal.—Wc acknowledge some very kind courtesies from our popular young friend MUler.
