anxious, to grind into tbe very dust
the Southern people. Yet even Staun
ton with liis -vindictiveness, and

the constitution. He shrank from do

seven years, Grant docs not hesitate
to do, even flippantly. The dictator

to regulate Louisiana affairs, to suit
and to serve the Radical party, than
lie. does of receiving a cottage from

UP TME COUNTRY.
Griffin—Atlanta—Col»b County
—Crops—etc., etc.
Last week v\*e_ determined to shake
from us the pincy woods dost, if ouly
for a short time, and cxcurt to the
mountains of north Georgia. Wc did
not go, however; for pleasure; we did
not see anything of the springs; wc
only made a short flying trip. We
first put in our appearance at Griffin,
put ut» under the charge of our clever
friend George Byington, ol the Bying-
ton Hotel which, by the waV, is oue of
llic best in Georgia, aud w'e arc glad
to sec that George's talent for hotel
keeping is being appreciated, and well
rewarded, for lie is doiug a fine bu-
6tiKss; and,nobettcrreiortfroin the low
er country than Grifliu.wc think, can be
found. It is as pleasant, water is fine
as ihe world afii-rds, and the society
and social advantages are par excel
lence. After a short stay here,
out for the Gale city, where we ar
rived in due time, but strange to tat
we did not stop at the far-famed II. X
K. Hotel; no, it is said that a hungry
editor always finds the best place, and
wo bring posted, did_not go to the II.
J. K., hut wc found a better place.
Wc like show and style very well
sometimes, but when we are set dowu
dining table we don't like all
style aud but little to cat, so wc had
learned that it was not so at the Na
tional Hotel, find there wc went, and
found it very agreeably different from
the hiy Hotel when we last tried it.—
kept by two gentlemen from Vir
ginia, where it is always said, the best
hotel keepers in the world live, mess.
Owen and Foster two as clever men as
they arc good hotel keepers, and we arc
glad to sec that their efforts to keep a
good hotel are being appreciated, and
that they arc doing a better busiuess
than even the II. L K. They really
keep a good bouse, and we will always
be glad to hear of their prosperity;
and too, their price is only three dol-
lais per day. We found Atlanta as
usual in a bustle, but sift it down and
you find but little business in it. They
are dull as well as wc are dowu here.
The cholera excitement is about died
out, and the fruit stands, as if to make
up for lost time, are running
watermelons, peaches, Ac. Every
niche and corner presents a huge pile
of line watermelons, with a solicitous
chap brawling out, “only five cents for
a nice slice.*’ They average in price
about twenty-five cents.
We found some little excitement on
| account of the Wnddell-Phillips’ duel af
fair; but that cooled down with no fight,
and they were without a sensation,
unlit the Herald tried to get up a little
one hy chartering ami sending out on
the West Point road, an extra train
to curry their mail, but we imagine
that another sensation in the hnvk de
partment will become greater and rule
that extra down. The Constitution
