To them arc they and the brethren
indebted, for not only a great majority
of the many good things on the occa

They would also beg leave to thank
the many kind friends who generously

LAYING OF THE CORNER
STONE.
The 19tb of Aug. 1873 will be long
remembered by’our Masonic fraternity.
On that day culminated the wishes
of the munificent donor Major Young,
when he left the handsome bequest to
£1. Thomas Lodge; on that day was
laid the corner stone of a building,
whose imposing walls shall be a mon
ument to the dead benefactor, in all
time to come.
The ceremonies were of an impo
sing, and impressive character, con
ducted by the Grand Master of the
State, S. D. Irvin, in the presence of
an immense throng.
We regret our inability to get the
names of the visiting brethren, as it
was our intention to have published
them. The following Lodges were
represented. St Thomas, Groover-

Orion. Concordia, Morven, Sbalto, and

Messrs. Editors : Having had
the pleasure of listening to the clo-

on “ American Culture ” delivered by
Rev. C. S. Rockwell, at the City Hall,
wc would like to suggest to the citi

propriety of having a course of public
lectures delivered by by said gentle
man. Could not no arrangement be
entered into among our citizens to se
cure the services of this gentleman
for that purpose? Will you call the
atteutiou of the people to the subject
and let us see what can be done in the

great benefit to many, a source of
pleasure >to others and would no doubt
be well patronized, n.

The City Hall was the scene of a

THE CROPS.
Our reports from various parts of

the whole. The catcqiillar and rust,
are both damaging the crop badly in
many sections. These troubles how
ever, are only in spots, and by no
means general. We .understood fur

kept clear of grass, that the damage i&
very slight, or none at all. Planters
