Savannah 1 1 l lie newspupcn oi Jjtuicafier, * uuu., publish an account of tho building of a brick dwelling house in that city in ten and a halt hours, the materials having been prepared and collected on the site previous to the commencement. Tho house is twenty feet by thirty on the ground floor, two stories in height, and contains eight rooms. There were in all upward ot one hundred workmen employed. Tho cellar foun dation was already laid, and ot pre cisely C o’clock Friday morning the men went to work. The Examiner thus describes the labor: “Mr. J. T. Reading, photographer, was present with his photographic ap paratus, and took viewa every fifteen minutes of the building and the work men while in motion, which, of course, produced some ridiculous pictures— men white and colored, in almost every position, nro to bo seen repre sented. At 8 o’clock A. M., the struc ture was advanced to the height of ono story, with two doors—ground and second—laid partition in, and lathed and partly plastered, doors hung stair ways up, and a view taken with the doctor in the midst of his workmen. The scene is a busy and comic one— the bricklayers erecting scaffolding for another story. Ten o’clock a. M-, view Taken of western front on Prince street; second story brica two thirds up; with carpenters ready to lay the floor, aud plasterers commence lath ing; western front painted and brick penciled on first story, and masons run short of brick and Uicu some dc- lay in consequcucc, but it was reme died in a short while. Eleven o'clock a. m., the bricklay- era are up to square of ceiling loi third lloor, with corners raised to the * height required to receive the rafters for roofing. Tinners waiting. The process of while coaling is now aliout completed in the first story. 11:18 a. ni., first rafter for the roof laid. At 11:21 the last brick was placed upon the chimneys, and the bricklayers are done. Roof sheathed and tinners be gin to lay rooting. 12:50 scaffolds all removed from building. 2:30 p. m., sash in windows of first story and painters finished up; washboards down and rubbish cleaned away. At this writing the tinners arc leavin; the building; roofing and spoutin;. completed. Plasterers still at work in the second story. The building hm been insured, ana in the course of a few hours will be ready for a tenant.” Geucial Kemper, tho candidate of tho Virginia Conservatives for Govci- nor, has addressed a letter to General Early, who opposed him, in which, in the event of being elected, he says: **1 shall be every inch a Governor, and shall, so far os I know liotv, dispense impartial, scrupulous, and fearless jus tice to ail interests and men. It is very gratifying to me that, while all sorts of representative men anil their friends have communicated with me. not one of them has received, not one of them sought, and all of them have disclaimed seeking, any pledges what ever at my hands. In no event will I be the property of any friend, or set of friends, and in no event will I harbor one atom of resentment against any square oppose* 1 of mine."" The above from General Kemper the Democratic candidate for Gover nor of Virginia, is decidedly refresh ing, in these days of venality and cor ruption. Whenever a man is put in nomination by his friends now-a-days, for any ollice, that carries with it in flucncc and appointment powers, ho at once besieged by a set of parasites and unfortunately, many of our public men yield to the demands of these hungry ollice hunters, and promise them place and position for tlucncc. Genera] Kemper has struck the very key uotc of political integrity and wc trust that tho people ot Vir ginia, will elect this distinguished soldier and patriot, to the high office for which he aspires.
