Wo are proud to chronicle a most most flattering increase at the open- iug of “Young Female College,” which opened on Wednesday last, of over fifty per cent more than at any previous opening. This is good and unmistakably shows the drill. Presi dent Baker informs us that his most hopeful expectations were exceeded, and that although he opened with 85 or flO that a considerable number, of the old scholars who reside in the city, oud near by, who are coming hack, were not there. lie thinks, and wc do loo, that Ihe College will close with j o'ic hundred and fifty pupils. It will n*in | be remembered too that six graduated, j which reduced the number, of old ones — that much, if only old ones had re- ?j : turned. But this shows clearly an in crease of over 50 per ccut. so far, and its fair to believe it will dose, with as many more as staled above. Wc are truly glad to see this flatter ing prospect for our college. For no man deserves, or is more worthy a line school tluin president Baker.— Who, assisted by the most able man agement of the Board of Trustees and a highly competent faculty bounJ, to make a fame for Young Fe male College, that will reach even be yond our .State limits. And why should it not, with a climate which for health and comfort can cl allcngc the world. The splendid chapel they have just completed gives the College quite an imposing appearance, and with this ! much needed addition, it is complete and will compare in every particular now, with any like institution in the State. Success makes success and the great success of the college at this openin will spread like wild tire, aud on word tor it, the next opening will he as great a per cent, over this ns this was over last. Success to it. May it continue to grow and be useful. We congratulate both patrons and facility and hope there may he mutual satisfaction. akiiivk: ii.:.h:-To^!»>*,TI... O, for a wave of cool crisp autumnal wind to roll across this heated bvenst. Two table spoons full ot spirits ot turpentine, in an ordinary painted bucket, is a new discovery for destroy ing caterpillars. Next. Impkovkments ox Jackson —The wood house next to Jo Fnss’ store is being ceiled and lilted up to be occu pied by Mr. Frank Jeflers with groce ries Jkc. Wc learn from Mr. B. T. Allen, who came down from Albany Monday, that Mr. Little’s saw mill was burned. Wc get no particulars. Have Clark h;is swapped that little baalam oil for a wire grass pony. Now get you a cart Dave aud you’l be “all n sitting.’* We direct the attention of our read ers to the card of W. W. Chisholm cot ton factor Savannah. He is a young man of sterling qualities am! good business capacity. We are pleased to learn that he is nlicady, this early in the season doing a fair business. See his card. Another Soda Fount. There are some rumors of some real estate transactions in the late burnt district that will insure a handsome block on uoinc of the ragged ruins on the West side of Broad street at an early day. To or i; Correspondent**L.’’—You have complied with one rule, but vio lated another by writing on bo!It sides of your paper. Never write on both sides. It makes Printers cuss almost, but wc overlook that this time, anJ your article will appear in our next, as we haven’t room this week. FLETCIIKK INSTITUTE. Professor O. 1>. Scott, and Assistant W. M. sheals, opened their school on Wednesday last, and wc arc glad to note, that as well as Young Female College, their prospects lor a good school are g**od. And wc feel confl dent of their getting as they deserve, a el mol equal to our Female school Wc need such a school and wo must have it. Let every body do something lor it, even if you have no boy >u live in the country you are inter- ted. Aud wc have n man at the head of it, now who we think can back you ami make good anything you may say tor this school, lie is a man ’ ’ think will give satisfaction. lie’s another Beaman, wc think, when developed, and by the way, tutored in teaching under, or Beaman;and bis assistant Mr. Shcats, ue haven’t a doubt but what be will keep bp bis row handsomely from what wc learn of him, as well as trom what we have seen of him. Wc want to see everybody lake hold and help to build up an Institution here to keep paco witli our Female school. Jt is useless to a r g u c the a d v a n luge s of schools to a town; they all kuow, that some towns are kept alive, ulouc by schools. All we want is to pel the thing started and we have got the men now and lets start it. Personal.—A. T. Taylor and I. Levy, returned Wednesday morning from New York, where they have bccu some weeks laying iu their fall stock. Tom looks improved. Wc hardly knew him. He has a little of the New York appearance about him. We hope they both enjoyed their trip and bought themselves rich. Mr. Bcnj. T. Allen, our Ex-Forc- , who has been employed in the 8nvniniali News office for some time. Is rusticating, and spent a day with us this week. e learn that Mr. F. M. Mason, of the Camilla Enterprise was j sdtiy evening hut wc didn’t get to hint. TO BUSINESS MEN. The busy season will soon be on us and we want simply to remind all, that they ought to prepare for it Have your letter heads, bill heads, cards, circulars, envelopes and such like fit ted up. We are turning out job work, which for style and price, no city in Georgia can beat We can, always and w ill, do it cheaper than Macon or Savannah, equally as neat, &nd doing U on machine Job Presses, wc can execute it on short notice. Do you know what your letter pa per and envelopes cost you in a year? You that economise and don't have them printed; you send and get a quire of paper and a pack of envelopes and pay thirty or tbii ty-fivc cents for them and in this w a y, your paper and envelopes in a year cost you double what wc could furnish you at, with a ucat card printed on each sheet of paper and envelope; which, besides the convenience, pays you in advertising; We will give a ream of good letter paper, with a neat head printed on it for S7.00, which is, the way vou buy it by the quire, less than your blank paper cost you; and we will print a thousand envelopes for six dol lars; or one dollar per hundred for less than five hundred. So stop this false economy and besides really econorai- yon patronize an institution which you feel interested in and want to sec live, andhave only been hindered by false economy from patronizingjbe- forc. All we ask to prove these t< facts is a trial. It puts a belter ap pearance to your business, it is a great convenience, it advertises your busi ness, and it is cheaper. Then come and see us and don’t be afraid that our low prices will break us, Wc arc prepared with modern improve ments, by which we can afford it. tf Bill heads of four sizes, only §8.00 per thousaud. tf Cotton.—Cotton is coming in right lively now, considering all things. We see every day, wagons loaded with cotton, mostly from one to three bales however, just ciiough to get a little spending money. N We are glad to sec that the market ia lively, and the best prices arc read ily paid. This, makes a good cotton market and will bring cotton to Thom- asvillc. right from neighboring mar kets doors. We heard a gcntlcmuu say the other day that he lived a great deal nearer Tallahassee than here but sold his cotton and bought his goods here. The good prices that arc paid here will always do it, aud it is a benefit to, not ouly the cotton buyer, but the merchants. Wc will put Thomasville against any cotton market in South, or South west Ga., aud wc didn’t pay 20 cts. for the “ first bale ” either. FURNITURE! FURNITURE! Messrs. S. Goldstone & Co., have added to their large and well assorted stock, a full and complete assortment of Furniture, consisting of Parlor and Bed-room setts-of the latest and finest make, cribs, trundle-beds, chairs, &C-, Ac., and os soon as the hall now used by the Masons is vacated, it will be handsomely fitted, up, in city style, as a regular .Furniture Emporium; of which Thomasville will not be ashamed. This is a move iu the right direction, and their enterprise should be liberally encouraged^the lesst or the largest piece of Furniture need no keep it, and will sell at the very closest figures. Their flue furniture, such as Parlor and Bed-room setts, are sold at the actual price of the Manufacturer, with ouly a commission added. Illus trated catalogues of all the latest style s of Furniture, can always be seen at their s*ore. P*C. SAWYER'S ECLIPSK COTTONGIN quail- Jon Work.— We received orders last Wednesday from the Tax Collec tors of Emanual and Dodge counties for tax receipts which wc are gettin: up iu book form, and furnishing chenj or than Burk or anybody else, and in good stylo. We expect to lie a 1 from several other couutics, too, thi week. 8enJ them on. -Mr. J. Fir Moses Way, Esq., well known here is spending a few days at his fathers residence in this county. He Is now connected with the well kuowu house of Dewit Morgan & Co., in Savanuah. This is a sterling house and Mosc will doubtless carry some good trade to It, as he is one of our most popular young inen. Mr. Romulus Cook has resigned the position of Ass’t Postmaster iu onler to enter upon a course of study nt Fletcher Institute os intimated iu our last week’s issue. Mr. Richard Greg ory, a young man from an adjoining County, has bceu appointed in the stead of the late incumbent and has entered upon the duties of the office. Mr. Gregory will doubtless give sat isfaction to our people as ht is polite, attentive and courteous, and seems to be anxious to please. , hack safe atu sound. Books like a new dollar, and we’l wager, bought, as good a stock of goods as any that went to New York. Thomas Brandon, who has been at tending Moore’s Commercial College, has returned. Mr. J. R. .Sheldon dropped his card in our office, Wednesday. He is one of the live Cotton and Commission men of .Savannah. Wc didu’t get to see him. Call again. The meeting at the Methodist Church is progressing, we are glad to say very favorably. Quite an iutcrcst i* manifested, and wc thiuk thejiros- pocts are good for a splcudid meeting; and wc hope much good may result from it. Several valuable aquisitions have already been made to the church, and the good feeling seems to increase. The Pastor, Rev.E. II. McGchccisun- tircing in his cflbrts and with the able help he has, will certainly make the meeting a success. Rev. ,T. B. Mc- Gchcc, Rev. Mr. Rentz. and Rev. J. B. Ward law, from a distance. anJ Rev. I>r. Leonard, and the Presiding- Older, Rev. J. M. Austin, of this place place arc assisting him. Prayer meeting is held every morn ing ami preaching in the evening, and we are glad to sec the congregations are large. May the good work go on. Fall goods are comiugin brisk now Wc sec Taylor & La Ison across t\ 4C way, are piling them iu by the d ray load. Levy’s store is rapidly fillinf } up.— He, from appearances, don’t fear a short crop, for he is going to .We lots of goods. WolfV, is not behind ami his store begins to look real New Y orkish. In fact all of them arc getting i a lheir stock aud wc think all are expectin'* a live fall trade. We hope they may have it, and that they will remember that the Times can tell a thousand people, every week what they have to sell and how the/want to sell it Improvements.—Col. Remington is making things lively around on the corner of Fletcher and Crawford Sts., ami will soon have erected a splendid residence, to which he intends tnov- tier to vacate the lot where he now lives, for Mr. Mitchell to com mence the Hotel. Mr. J. W. Seward has commenced to build on the corner of Crawford and Washington streets, next to T. J. Bottoms’. The Masonic building is going up rapidly now. The first story will soon Goldberg, aud Ainsworth & Finn, are painting and penciling their coi ner and it will soon present the best appearance of any corner in town, and it should, as it is to front the ho tel. Dr. Bower has painted aud fixed up his house, in the rear of Ainsworth A Finn’s. I)roycr& Isaacs have greatly im proved Ihe appearance of their store by lowering their floor. They are now on a common level. Lastly. Tom Taylor has got a now hat. A Bold Thief.—Last Monday the tender of the accommodation traiu eugiue ran ofi’ the track, aud Mr. Allen the fireman, had a carpet sack on the engine iu which he kept his clothes. While they were busy jacking up the tendei, a negro boldly coturcd up and^tole the carpet sack without them seeing him, but as soou as it was missed they began to look out, and on Tuesday Morning, he and his brother saw a by the name of who is rather noted for that popular stove the Magna Charta. Their stock in every department is now complete, all new anu tresh. Call and see our new prints. aug 23-tf Oun Fire Department.—The Yigilants were out for practice and regular monthly parade on Monday last. The Neptunes, and Hook & Ladder Co. were out, on monthly parade and drill on Tuesday, and after a little squirting and climbing, which *hcy seemed to enjoy, they put up their machines. There is considerable mail mallei held in the Post office here for Mrs. Ellen Smith, and if not called for will be forwarded to the Dead Letter office. J. W. SEWARD, P.M. No Money Order Office, Yet.— Our Post master informs us that ow ing to certain formal reasons of the department, a Money Order office can not be started until the -beginning of the year, consequently we will have none until next year. If you need any first class brick call on Mr. J. T. Arnold, iiaviug ful filled his contract with the building committee of the Masonic Hall lie is prepared to furnish good brick at his yard near town in any quantity to suit purchasers.
