Another Attempt to Bra the
.■ Town.
On Wednesday morning at a quar
ter to two o'clock the startling cry of
fire ! roused onr citizens. On hasten
ing to the scene we toand that one of
the buildings in Brace's lower range
was on tire, simultaneous with tills
the roof of Mr. L Levy's store was
discoveted to be on fire, whilst at the
same time a well-lighted pile of rich
lightwood under the Enterprise Office,
showed that the intention of the par-
lies, were to get up a general confla
gration. No bungling head planned
and executed this bold attempt to lay
in ashes the business portion of the
town; the street limps were removed
from the vicinity of where the fires
were set, whilst kerosene and rich
pine splinters, were freely used, to in
sure a quick go off with the mad
flames. But fortunately it was dis
covered before much headway was
made, and was noon under control.
The Neptunes and Rescues put in
an appearance promptly, although the
fire was extinguised without the aid
of either one of the machines. The
Vigilante did not bring their engine
out as the file was put under control
almost as soon as discovered.

Thomasville Guards.—This old
company is being revived and put on
its legs again. Tbe bond for the arms,
fifty Springfield rifles of the most im
proved patterns, has been forwarded
to Atlanta, and the arms will be here
at an early day. The roll is being
rapidly filled, and wc expect to see tbe
Guards within a few weeks in their
new and elegant uniforms, and bright
ly burnished arms,parading the streets.
It is the intention of the Company to
perfect Ihemsolve* iu the drill and
procure uniforms at an early day, in
order to participate in tbe festivities
of onr approaching Fair. Fall in
boys, brass buttons are very attractive.
Wc hope the young ladies will act
as recruiting agents for the Guards, if
they do our ranks will soon be up to
the maximum number.
Girls tell your sweethearts to Join
the Guards.

complicity in the Oclockonee tragedy,

have a hearing to-day.
understand there is a warrant
out for a white man, who is suspected
of beiug implicated in this affair.
Wc have given our readers else
whcic, a foil and impartial account
of this deplorable affair, we shall
not express any opinion ns to tbe
guilt or innocence of the accused, as
they are to undergo a legal investi

The old blacksmith shop that lias
ood for mauy years on the corner of
acfc;on and Crawford streets, has
been removed by Col. Seward; and
in its stead is beiug erected a commo
dious residence; portions of the old
Braswell house bring utilized for the
purpose.
There arc no vacant houses to rent
in Thomasville and the Colonel will
no doubt, very soon find a tenant.
We should like to see more resi
dences going up. The investment
would no doubt pay handsomely.

OOO—Loss of
Life. Jul,Jlc.
One of the most violent storms that
baa passed over oor country for long
years, swept our town and section
yesterday morning.
It commenced blowing a little be
fore! o'clock, and gradually increas-
in violence until about 7 o'clock,
when with the fury of a gale it swept
bouses, trees, signs, fee., blocking np
many of the streets with the debris.
Tbe splendid building being erected
Meswra. Cobb A Hamil, for St
Thomas Lodge, on tbe corner of Broad
and Fletcher streets, and which would
have been ready for the roof next
week, yielded to tbe storm king, and
fell with a crash about 9 o’clock; en
tailing a loss on the contractors in
connexion with the loss on their brick
yard that will approximate $3000. In
this connexion we are pleased to note
the fieuerous action of the Messrs.
Moore. These gentleman are large
contractors themselves and, have a
large force. They have tendered their
own, and all their employees services
to Messrs. Cobb A Hamil.for one week
free.
The storm raged with unabated fury
until noon, when it gradually lulled
bringing up in tbe North West, hav
ing veered around from the North
East where it commenced. Riding
over tbe town hastily yesterday even
ing after tbe cessation of the storm,
wo could only note the general ruin
that met the eye everywhere.
The kitchen of Rev. Wm. Taylor
was blown down and one woman (col
ored) killed in it, two small children
narrowlv escaping. The large dining
hall at the Fair grounds is a mass of
you fed interested in and want
to sec live, andhave only been hindered
by false economy from patronizing
fore. 411 we ask to prove these to
facts is q lyial. Jt puts q hotter ap
pearance to yonr bUSipess, it is a gr
convenience, it advertises your w
ness, and it is cheaper.
Then come and soo us and don’t _
afraid that bur low prices will break us,
we are prepared with modern improve
ments, by which w$ can Afford it.
Jo Ties hat not got quite into the
17th, but his friends wiD find him in tbe
bride store on Broad street, formerly
occupied by Dr. Qlower as a Drag-
store. He is dosing out fus entire
stocky at such rates as will justify our
ladles and others, heeding anything
in the dry goods line in calling at once.
Everybody who knows Jo Fats, knows
he will do just what be says he will,
and he says that he is going to sell his
goods at some price or other. Go and
ruins. The ladies reception room is
partially destroyed, whilst much of
the enclosure is blown down. The
stables on Mr. J. L. Finn’s lot are fiat
on the ground, and we understand
that Master Willie Finn made a nar
row escape from the falling rains.—
We noticed the tin roofing on Mrs.
Hayes’ residence on Broad street,
curled up iu all kinds of fantastic
shapes. Tbe “West End House” lost
a chimney. Id fact there is hardly a
house and lot in town, that hns not
suffered more or less. We do not
think that an over-estimate is made
when we say that tbe losses of tbe
town will foot up SIO.OGO
But the most painful part, is the loss
of life. As stated, a negro woman was
drilled in the falling building on Mr.
Taylor’s lot. It is also reported that
a negro was killed out at Major Tay
lors place, and also a pair of mules.
There is no doubt that considerable
loss of life has taken place, whilst
many narrow escapes have been made.
An immense tree blew down across a
building on Mr Kendrick’s place some
three miles from town, in which were
six persons. It lodged on a large bed
under which three of them hod taken
refuge, none of them were injured.
Business was almost entirely sus
pended daring the whole ot yesterday.
\Ve have bad no reports from the coun
try but the loss will doubtless prove
heavy. It ia thought by competent
judges that the storm will cut tbe cot
ton crop of the county short, 1000
bales.
The wires were down all day so that
we could get no reports by telegraph.
The train from Albany reported the
storm as sweeping everything in its
S atis. We expect to hear of serious
isasters in the next few days, from
along the track of the stotm.
Those who go down to the sea in
ships had some rough billows to ride.
We can but hope, that each gallant
vessel afloat, found a safe harbor, or
outrode tbe storm op the boson* ot tbe
ocean.
