Raifprd has been spending several days in our town in the inter est of the “Land looted water route/ Wc had the pleasure of listening to the gentleman, on Monday afternoon in the City Hall, when by his lucid ex planations, diagrams and charts, he demonstrated so clearly, that none could fail to sco the entire practicabili ty of the Coast route, and its great ad vantage over every other proposed line. The Col. was introduced to the City Council, and asssmblage, com prising many ot our leading citizens, by tho Hon. Jos S. Merrill, Mayoi of the city. His elucidations were plain, pointed and pertinent, whilst his figures and data were held well in hand, and showed clear as the noon day sun, the vast importance to our section of this work; The following extracts from the minutes ol the proceedings of the Council, will show the spirit that per vades that body. We trust that tins committee will go to work and demon strate that Thomasvillc is alive to her own interest, and that of our entire section: REOUI.AU meitino. Council convcucd at 4 o'clock, P. M. Present, lion. J. S. Merrill, Mayor, and Aldermen Finn, Brandon, Stark, Smith and Jerger. The minutes of the last regular and special meetings were read aud con firmed. The following resolution was offered by Alderman Brandon and passed unanimously, viz: Resolved by the Mayor and Council Of the Town of Thomasvillc, That the project of Mr. Rayford, as presented oy him before Council, of an inland •anal communication bitween the Mississippi river aud the waters ot the Atlantic meets our hearty approval and ought to hayc the liberal support of enterprising men throughout the en tire South, and that the Mayor appoint a committee of five to co-operate with the Ccutral Committee in Savannah. Whereupon his Honor, tbo Mayor, appointed the following named gentle men: Aldermen J. L. Finn, Col. A. P. Wright, Dr. P. S. Bower, Capt. John Triplett and Mr. Isaac Kubitsheck. Kleptomania. It is not generally known among our citizens, that a couple of indivAi- als, and who heretofore like Ciesar s wife “have been above suspicion,” took advantage of the confusiou and disorder that naturally followed the lay alter the storm, and appropriated certain articles intending no doubt, to apply the same to their own use, as cold weather is approaching. Owing the bulk, it was impossible for them to carry the things off at once. In the meantime the affair leaked out, and one of our most efficient detectives was being put on the tiack, when the ar ticles were returned. Had not this been done a highly interesting trial, before uncle Donald would have been the result Saturday night, aud these ;cntlcmcu would have been hustling iround to get some one on their bond. Jo Fass says that he would have con tributed liberally, to aid in their pros ecution. At the urgent request of their friends, ami they are respectably connected, wc suppress names. By the prompt return of tho things in question, the city lost two efficient watchmen that night, as in the other event, they would have had to remaiu up all night. We know of some parties who are making active preparations for the winter campaign, they will be pre pared to defend their goods and chat tels, at all hazards. ' The handsome specimen of the “Sa vannah Guards,” uniform which has been one xlubitiou at the stoic of W. E. Davies & Co., for the past lew days, has attracted considerable attention,es pecially from the members of the “Tljomasville Guards.” who have had ituuder inspection with the view of determining upon a uniform for them selves. One of the “Sav’h Cadets' uniforms haro also been on exhibition at the same place. This is Confeder ate Grey, hut trimmed with black in stead of red, as is the ease with the Guards uniform, which is a dark Confederate grey contrasting well with its bright trimmings aud haudsomc Georgia buttons. The Guards have adopted this uni form. (that of the Sav’h Guards.) aud will make a handsome show in it. At the September meeting of the Thomas County AgiculturalSociety.on Thursday last, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted: lUsolvtd, That all members of this Society, and all other persons who feel an interest in the success of our next Fair, arc hereby requested and earn estly solicited to attend the next regu lar meeting of this Society at the Court House iu TtiomasviUc, on Thursday the IHh day ot October next, for the adop tion of important measures relating to the success of our approaching Fair. • i... -l-.1 ... i. .i .
