And we want to say for Thom- nsAille, the merchants all say they have brought on the larget stocks they ever had, for the fall trade, and it is so, and, they are doing a good business, but very few new advertisement of new fall goods can be seen in the pa per. This would leave the impression abroad that wc have no new goods in Thoinasville, that the town and coun try is not in a prosperous condition, and the impression made on a man looking out for a location would be un favorable. Rut wc would say that it not so. We know where of wc speak when we say wc have the best business town, and as good country to back it as any town in South or South WeslGeor- giaoreven it? Middle Georgia. And that although out merchants are slow this fall to let the world know what they are doing. We can say that we have as substantial and clever, if not a* enterprising, set of merchants as any town in Georgia, and they have as large stocks of goods, but they are airaid of being crowded with business it they advertise. Rut to the point they are not patronizing their papers as they should: and while they would he encouraging and helping to keep up good papers, which do more for a town than any other institution, it would be bread cast on the watcis, which always re turns two fold. Wc simply make these remarks to pass Ibr what they bring, but while, of course outsiders will say that self in terest dictated them, wc would say that it is not altogether that, there is a feeling of pride amongst us pajier men as to the local advertisements, for as wc have said, wc too judge each others town by the local advertise ments, and the patronage they get at borne. And we don’t want them to think lH cause our merchants don’t ad vertise that our town is not up with other*. And wc hope they will back us in this assertion by coming up with tin ir big advertisements and showing the world that they have got new fall ! The City IIali. As lor ourself, if it was not our duty to be there, they would have to pay us a dollar to go there and set two hours on one of them benches. We think a great deal more of hunting an easy position than of what is going on.— Why it is really cruel to take a lady, who is any ways feeble, and make her *'.d on a low narrow bench without a back for two hours; and they seldom go there the second time. Wc think i! would pay to put in good seats. It would not cost much; many companies would he afraid to rent it as it is, be cause the appearance of the Hall would indicate that it would not pay. flic season for shows is coming on now. and we throw out this hint, trusting iliat the authorities, who we know are ever ready to advance the intcicst of the town and make all conveniences lor the tlieii Another Soria Fount. J Personal.—Wc were glad to meet mi our town this week our old Irjcud Dr. C. C. Andrews, of Lumpkin, Ga. lie is easting around and wc hope , he may drop his anchor here. He is jau honorable, clever gentleman ami we would be glad to welcome him as a citizen of Thomasville and assure him he will never find a better place, or a more hospitable, clever people.— Come on. He is loo, a brother of Dr. John 1). Andrews, who lias already made a reputation not uncuviablc, al though hero but a short while, Col. Hawkins, of St. Louis, who is traveling for the justly cclehrutcd Home Stomach Ritters, which are so rapidly becoming the standard tonic ami appetizer of the South, dropped in on us Wednesday. He is an affa ble clever gentleman, and wc hope he may succeed in getting some one to take held of his bittter::. Wo don’t think any who do, will regret it. Kv KRY BODY, ATTENTION.—Again wc would remind the people ot the meeting of the Thomas County Agricul- j tural Society ou next Thuuday. It I will be a meeting of vast interest, not a j only to the members of the Society but 1. j to every citizen of the county, and the •.* resolution adopted at the last meeting s- j invites and wants trtrybody to come. Don’t let the temporary gloom caused erses. weigh on your iniud*. Misfortuucs should stimulate us rath er to new and more vigorous action f*»r the interest of our section, and to try to regain the lost ground. Then come out with cheerful faces, aud wil ling hands and hearts, resolvcd to sho rid what our county can do. - I m at the fai “*I he intelligent compositor’* last weeks issue, in the notice of the uniform ol the Savannah Volunter Guard*, (and which has been adopted with a slight alteration by the Thom- asvillc Guards.) spells exhibition in this wise, xhibition. Patent not ap plied for. It w ill not be considered any iuliingemcni to pse the word with the abbreviation noticed. The 4th of November is the day the Fair commences. We would call the attention of ev erybody to the new advertisements of that old and popular house, and the largest and most substantial in the South, Messrs. Lathrop & Co., of Sa vannah. We were in their house last week, and we must say that it is the most complete establishment in Geor gia, and it is surprising to see what a stock of goods they have, four stories, with the basement, are full, divided up, in the different departments, in a systematic style lhat*we seldom see South, and in fact, equal to many New York houses. They buy for cash, and in such large lots that are enabled to sell close, and we are sat isfied that country # merchants could not do better than to buy from them, and should patronize such houses, and encourage them iu so laudable enter prise. 'It is useless for us to speak of them personally, they are already known in this section as straightfor ward and liberal in their dealings, and personally, clever accommodating iu their manners. Mr. George McKinnon who is so well and favorably known here is still with them, and is adding new laurels to his already bright reputation as a salesman. 'The Guards Election of Offi cers.—At a called meeting held on Thursday evening at the City Hall for the purpose of electing three Lieuten ants, five Sergeants and four corporals. The following was the result: John Triplett, 1st Lieutenant. K. T. McLean, 2d, W. E. Davies, Jr., 2d “ E. M. Smith, 1st Sergeant. A. T. Taylor, 2d T. N. Hopkins, 3rd “ J. II. Coyle, 4th “ R. T. Hurst, 5th “ corporals: E. It. Pringle, O. F. Bacon, S. It. Pyles, J. R. Helms. C. Lightfoot, Color bearer. Those wishing to be economical should visit the store of I. Levy, as he is determined during the Spring and Summer season, to offer particular in ducements to close buyers. Country merchants buying at wholesale, will save money by pricing our goods be fore ordering from other markets. apr 0-ly. A Grange in Thomas.—Wo met on the train the other (lay Mr. Long, the assistant of Dr. Stephens, the Dep uty ot this district, wiio was on his way to Duncanville to organize a grange. So Thomasville will have to be now, if she has any which is not probable, a subordinate grange—be hind—too slow—afraid. What a pity, but it is no more than wc deserve, and we admire the pluck of our Duncan ville friends and wish them every suc cess, aud hope they may come up and try and instill enough progress into our people to organize a subordinate grange here. It will* be seen by our letter this week from Colquitt, that our neigh boring town of Moultrie is waking up from its “Rip Van Winkle ” sleep, and are going to repair their Court House. Other improvements mark the place, new stores, etc. We hope that our correspondent will keep us posted about affairs in that section.— Wc have a large number of subscrib- Colquitt county, who would be glad to read his letters. Those wishing the article, " ill save money liy giving us a call. apr.o-ly [communicated.] Moultrie, Ga., Sept. 25,18t» Editors Times.—After long delib eration among our County officials, it has been decided to make some im provements iu our public buildings. To commence with, our Court House is to be repaired aud painted, this we say of a certainty, for the job of re pairing has been let out to the lowest and best bidder, Mr. J. J. Norman, taking the work at seventy dollars. Our Ordinary has employed Mr. Jack- to do the paiutiug, giving him for services sixty dollars. The mate rials for painting Ac., has been order ed and has arrived costing some little the rise of one hundred dollar* more, making a total cost for improvements upon Court House some where near two hundred and thirty dollars. These repairs arc being made none too 1 lor the Court House i* last “goin; rack and ruin,’’ and wc thiuk the cost very reasonable indeed; but there are some of our citizens who “shudder’’ when it is spoken of, for they so much dread the mite, more of taxation. Y< of wealthy couuties may smile at this little ex'peuse, but to us it is something that each tax payer can feck and there are men among our independent back- wood men, as well as in the cities whom “if you touch their pockets, you touch their hearts.” The storm of Friday the 19th., was not so severe with us as it was in Thomas and Brooks, but still it done a great deal of damage, blowing up hundreds of trees and demolishing fences, beating out cotton Ac. The most of our farmers were up with their cotton, therefore the damage in this line was not so great. The roads in every direction were blockaded with trees, but the obstructions with but few exceptions have been removed. Our efficient road overseers called out the hands, and Saturday, Monday and Tuesday the ax could be heard ery direction severing the mighty pine log, and clearing out a way of pas sage. MoultrieTs improving some; we can now boast of two stores instead of one. Mr. R. Bearden, has fora longtime monopolized the trade in “dry goods and groceries’’ in our village but now Carlton A Co., will “divide the thing squarely” with him. They have up a ycry nice little stock, suited to the wants of the honest farmer of (he coun try. Mr. Bearden has a mil house and a full assortment of goods suited j to the wants and demands of our citi zens generally. 1 J. II. W. F. McEmsBOEOUGn. Sad Bereavement.—Our entire community will sympathize with Air. A. Q. Moody who has bnt recently moved from among us, in the sad and wholly jgiexpected loss of his estima ble lady, which occurred at their new borne near Boston on last Sunday evening, after a very brief illness. This lady by her gentle and pleas" ing manners, had woven many strong tics of love alid friendship among our citizens, but whose tender cords have been iudcly broken Jby the icy hand of death. She leaves an interesting boy four years old and a prattling lit tle girl only eighteen months old, who is happily unconscious o! the irre parable loss which she has sustained. The Savannah papers come to us with accounts of the stagnation of the cotton market in that city, owing to the financial crash in New York. We hope this state of things will not last long, as many of our planters are com pelled to realize as soon a* practicable, on a portion of their crops at least. Wc would advise our friends in the country, not to yield to any temporary depression in the market, if cotton should go low down from the present financial status of affairs, as it must necessarily re-act If you need any first class briek call _ j Mr. J.
