It it a matter of regret, shared in common by all, that our fire depart ment which has heretofore p*u jjU once our pride and protection, should be in such a disorganized state. The City Council has been peculiarly un fortunate, in welding and holdipg to gether this body of our citizens,'Vpon whom depends the safety and protec tion of the town. Since the ACROSTIC! Social ties are often broken, And from dear mends wc have to part Links .are sundered with no token— Lett to us from an aching heart,' In the eyes of those dear loved ones. E’en in parting no tears we see. Each may lightly part from other; ’Though a despairing heart there be. Underneath those bright smiles hidden Revealing not the secret anguish, Not by outward signs of sorrow. nato misunUeretandiDg which' occm- frery our he«u w UngnWi, rrT . • * J .. Rehevednotby hopes of the morrow, red at the extensive conflagration on r Broad street, when Chief McLeag re signed, there has been that want of unity and good feeling both in Uie de partment and the different companies, without which no fire department can work harmoniously and effectively. Ass’t Chief Hcpkius resigned a short time since, leaving a perfect blank in the Are deportment officers. Our fire apparatus, and system of procuring an adequate supply of water, art not so perfect but that they need constant looking after. Who is performing this responsible duty? Arc our cisterns all right, in case the fire fiend should burst out at midnight? Who are the guardians of the place? Who are on the match towers? These are perti- uent questions. The Council introduces measures at ono meeting only to withdraw them at the next, whilst they are grave ly informed, that onoaentire company suspends for uinety days, leaving a valuable and effective engine, the property of the city, bought for her protection entirely worthless; whilst other companies are threatening to disband. All this should be stopped. Council should go to work and frame a fire ordinance, that is just and equit able to all and then have it enforced. This thing of dilly dallying along won’t do; the interests of every property holder of the town is involved. J . Wo trust that the Council may lend themselves at once, to the very essen tial task of putting the fire department in effective working order, thereby giving to our citizens that degree of safety and protection, to which they are entitled. . a Goods in large varieties. A!>o. liUO .Shawls of the latest styles jtisl opened. At Levy’s: Goods at wholesale or iu large quantities, very low. apr.tVly The cool spell Ibis week brought overcoat? and shawls into active re quisition, whilst those who were with out these very necessary adjuncts to ones comfort these cold mornings and evenings, were busy negotiating with our clothiers for them. Wc direct the attention of our read ers to the notice of Mr. Lehcus Dcklc. Tax-collector. The Comptroller-Gen eral requires of him to issue li fas and collect all taxes by the loth of Decent- Jter, consequently he has lo close his books on the ttiot. Another Soda Foiiuf. A. We bid him a cordial welcome in our mi*.Nt, and can assure him, that he and 11 others seeking a home in our sun- iy clime, will receive a hearty wcl- omc at the hands of our people. We earn from the Doetor, that the Rev. •Ir. Mclvcc, well known and highly cs- cemed by our citizens, expects to eave with his lady lor this place in a civ days. The sprightly Iqcal of our Jackson street coteinporary, took a turn in the ountry last week. A Desideratum Long Needed in Tiiomasville.—We are glad to announce that the basement of the Masonic Temple has bccu leased to Mr. l\nyer who is going lo fit it up first-class style for a Restaurant. From tbe gentleman's well-known tastes and menus, wc have no doubt dial he will lit up a resort the \ of which has long been felt which wili prove worthy the patronage of all.— The Messrs. The proprietor expce'.s to be able to open by tbe first of next The last brick was laid on the New Masonic Temple on comer of Broad and l'lotcher on Tuesday evening As the unsightly scaffolding has been torn away, this splendid struct ure with it’s beautiful arched windows, and the graceful one that spans the entire buildiug iu front; uudernealb of which may be seen the handsome white inarbUi Keystone, all of which gives the building an air of finish style and completeness which eclipses all Mirrouuding structures. The wood work is progressing rapidly and the store beneath will be completed by the l*t of November. The Youno Too Must Die. — Twice within a short time, has the Angel of death, touched the fair dieck of early youth, wheu tinged with the warm glow of health and blanched them with his chilling breath. A few weeks ago, the chimes of our Sabbath bells as they rang out clear and joyous on a fair Sabbath morn, were the requiem of Willie Remington; and agaiii on last Sunday when these Sabbath bells were calling God’s wor shipers to Ilia house, their tones fell u{>oii the fast deadening ear of Willie Linton; whose spirit still fluttered for a brief hour io its tenement of clay. Blit the golden cord was loosened and Willie’s young spirit took its flight to the God who gave ib The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Mr. McGehcc at the Methodist Church on Monday' morning; the interment taking place in the new Cemetery. The church was filled with members of the Methodist Sunday School, (of which Willie was a member) aud of the other schools in the city. The be reaved parents have the sympathy of our cutirc community. FROM BOSTON. Boston, Ga., Oct 9,1873. Etls. Times;—On Monday evening 2 had the first visit of cold weather Yesterday morniug ( overcoats were in demaud, but to-day old Sol shines as hot as usual. Business continues dull. An occasional bale of cottou is bar tered tor goods and cash combined. Messrs. I*. S. Foy and Jno. W.Tay- ior will soon creel new residences in the suburbs of town. We have still another new enterprise in this enter prising town, namely: a lumber yard; truly our progress is onward and up ward. We also, hear that an cx-mer- chnut contemplates building both store house and dwelling. Tableaux and clmrddcs are being rehearsed prior to a public entertain ment for the benefit of the M. E. Church, now being rebuilt; due notice will he given of the lime. We are sorry to hear of a fight among some men who ought to do better. Cause “toting” benzine. It is to be hoped that some ot our yodhg meu (and some not so young) will asc drinking, carousing and visiting persons after night, who they will not associate with in daylight. Wo were pleased to meet in our office this week, two representatives of the lo cal profession from our neighboring town of Quitman, Messrs. Hunter & Kingsbury. They both appeared to be in tine trim for the Fall Courts, and ill doubtless give a good account to clicut^ of their cases. Quite a sensation was created in our usually sedate place this week by the report that Yellow Jack had made his appearance in our sister town of Bain- bridge. The Railroad authorities re fused to transport the remains oi a young German who died there, until satisfied by the atteudia^ physicians certificate that it was not Yellow Fe ver. Another Good Man Gone.—The death of Mr. C. N. Powell an old and well known citizen of our county al though not entirely unlooked for has cost a gloom over his entire neighbor hood. He was a consistent member of the Missionary Baptist Church, had lived such for years, aud passed away with tbo hope of a blessed immortality lighting his way to the tomb. Wc had the dull, and endless rou tine of our oflice labors, agreeably In terrupted by some of our lady friends on Tuesday evening, who called in to see our “Power Press,” throwing off the outside edition of the Times’ lor this week. They brought a flood of sunshine with them, which stilllmgers. dispelling tbe ennui which hangs around a bachelors establishment— Wc shall always he happy to have our fair friends call on Tuesday evenings (at which time our out-side edition is worked off) or at any other time. Oct. 7,1873. J. W. H. F. McE. f Lee Still Liras. — To-morrow is the anniversary of the death of General Robert E. Lee, the hero, Christian and patriot His body rests at Lexington, the scene ofhis last labors fur the Southern youth, but bis virtues are embalmed in the hearts ofhis countiy men; and with Washingtons, will be kept green in the memory of our peo ple, long, long after those who sneered at his devotion to tbe land that gave him birth, shall have sunk into end less oblivion. The Lightening Tie. — Messrs. Gtovcr Stubbs & Co., have the agency of the above for the state of Georgia. The inventors could not have selected a more reliable^firm to introduce this new tie, nor ong having the confidence of the public to a greater degree. It is extremely simple and perfectly se cure and will no doubt as soon as its merits are understood, become a favorite tie with planters and shippers. Wc have a specimen of tho tie in our office, which can be seen at any time; If you need any first class brick call ud Mr. J. P. Arnold. Having ful filled his contract with the building committee of the Masonic Hall he is now prepared to furnish good brick at his yard near town in any quantity to suit purchasers. His material being good he is enabled to manufacture a good article of brick and purchasers would do well to examine his stock before purchasing elsewhere. tf New Soda Fount. Messrs.
