Charley is one of the '‘Lcl- antfe” o! the South, withal a splendid fellow, and keeps the best house in the State at Fort Valley. Wo understand from the Secretary of tlio Fair, that his books are open for entries, and that he already has a number ot entries made. That don’t look much like a failure. Another Soda Fount. A. Two Additional Policemen.— This will be welcome news to our cit izens. As will be seen by reference to action of council our city fathers have authorized his Honor, the Mayoi to employ two additional policemen at a salary of 8400 per annum. With this addition to our force the way of tho transgressor will bo hard in the corporate limits of Thoouuville. Tde Concert Wednesday Nigiit. Remember there are no blanks in this lottery. Many of the prizes arc handsome and valuable. We hope to see a large crowd out, as the price of admission is only 50c—25c for chil dren. A Laudable Enterprise.—The ladies of the Baptist Church have or ganized a “ Benevolent Association,” for the purpose of rendering aid and comfort to the poor and destitute of ir town. In order to further this truly benev olent work, they propose meeting at some private tesidence in the place, once or twice every month and have what is termed a “ cake cutting.” We will not describe the modus operandi, hut trust that at the next affair of this kind, that all who can spare anything to this noble work, will be on hand and see for themselves. Wc had the pleasure of being pres ent at the Rev. Mr. Gauldens at the one on Friday night last, aud certain ly a more really enjoyable and pleas ant gathering wc have never witness ed. Bright sparkling eyes, made still mere beautiful, by the consciousness jfbciug engaged in a good cause, shone with a happy lustre. Whilst the little folks were perfectly carried awayfwith each other.) Over 82S,00 was realized. From the following it will be seen that those who are in need of an ex pert, in putting in perfect order and repair, Pianos, Organs Ac., will have an opportunity cf engaging such a person during the present month. This house employs none but the vety first workmen, and consequently our citizens may rely on any agent sent out by Messrs. LuJden & Bates. Edij’s Times: Wc beg leavo to ask that you give notice in your pafier, that during the present mouth we shall have a fust-class Piano and Or gan Tuner and Repairer in your city, and all i>er8ons wishing work in his line done, can be served in the best manner by leaving their orders with you. Respectfully, Ludden & Bates. Owing to the financial crash and Uie failure of the Northern Pacific Railroad, several peanut stands have been fotced into bankruptcy, whilst a number of pic and upplc dealers, have gone into liquidation. But the sad dest results of this unnatural and un healthy inflation of our national cur rency, is seen in its effects on the pea nut stands, several having been forced to issue “certified checks.” A general meeting of dealers in goobers has been called, when it is supposed that they will pass resolu tions sustaining each other, and agree ing to take “ certified checks of depos it” at par, in payment for goobers when bought in sums of less than 15c. The Meeting on Thursday.— We were pleased to uoticc the una nimity and sameness cf purpose which pervaded Jhe meeting at it its dose on Thursday. Whilst sC*no doubted, all cheerfully united in upholding’ our Fair aud makiug an effort that must ueccssarily bring success on the 4th prox. The appeal of the ever vigilant Pres ident, Col. Wright, who has watched over this enterprise with a parents so- lictudc, was enough to have aroused a feeling of enthusiasm in the breast of men fur less devoted to a cause, than the stockholders of this Associa tion are to their organization. In less than an hour alter the adjournment ol the meeting the Prcs’t. had Hashed the intelligence by telegraph, to ever)’ part of the country that old Thomas w ould hold a Fair of which our people shall he proud. Early yesterday moruing a corps of workmen were set to work. From this lime until everything is in perfect readiness, the note of preparation will he ringing from early dawn until late at night. The hearts ot our people arc in the enterprise, the ladies are coin- iug up nobly to assist in making it a success — consequently we know no such word as fail. Of R FI UK DEPARTMENT. Wc took occasion in our last issue, to allude to the disorganized state of our lire department, and urged coun cil to adopt an ordinance that would meet the approval of all; thereby, fos tering and cementing together this very csseutial part of our city govern ment. We have had a splendid or ganization iu the past, and may have iu the future. Wc have two white companies composed of the best young men in the town, and one colored, in whose ranks aro found some of the very hest material to bo hod in the place. These men give tlielr time aqd labor to the town for nothing; many of them have gone to a heavy person al outlay, they risk life and limb, and are ever oh the alert, even at the si lent midnight hour, to spring to the rescue of our slumbering citizens.— They should meet with that recogni tion at the hands of the city govern ment, to which their devotion and ser vices so justly entitle them. Wc are plcasd to see that at the last regular meeting of council, the ordi nance which appears elsewhere, was passed to its second reading. It has been so amended as to elimi nate features mcorpotated in former ordinances, and which were consider ed objectionable to the diffeieut fire companies composing the department, and we think will meet the hearty ap proval of every Company in the de partment. Without unity andcouccrt of action, and a responsible and energetic head to tho Uie department, tho town and citizens will lack that protection to which as tax payers they aro entitled. Wc think the wise and prudent action of the city council will give us the former—now lot us have the latter* IMPORTANT ORDINANCE- REGULAR MEETING. Council Chamber. ) Tbomasville, Ga., Oct.13'73.) In view of the above appeal, I earn estly call upon every man, woman and child in ThouiasviHe to contribute their mite as God has blessed them, towards the relief of the sorely afflicted people of the plague stricken cities of Shreveport and Memphis. We who have been blessed with an unusual de gree of health in our pleasaut town all the summer can form bnt a faint idea of the awful horrors of the plague iu those cities. The wiping out of whole families by the fell destroyer, the dis ruption ot all family ties, the wild grief of mothers, fathers deprived at once of kindred, means, and all sup port,’the starvation, neglect, and other demoralization every where prevalent under so terrible a scoorge; 000 or phans in Memphis and 400 in Shreve port, crying aloud to Heaven for mercy; and to man for help; make up the outlines of a picture, the con templation of which should rouse ev ery heart and soul in this favored place to come to the rescue. I respectfully request every mer chant in this place to-day, to place's small box on their counter for contri butions and report the result at sun down to my place of business. I also, call on every Sabbath school to take up a collection for same purpose, and the various pastors of Uie churches here arc respectfully requested to help in tho good work by taking up a col lection to-morrow, which they can send direct or through me. The en tire amounts of subscriptions shall he published in next issue of the Euter- prise and Times. Let us all make a voluntary offering that shall be honorable to us and cheering to our distressed brethren, whom we trust w-iil ere long be re lieved from their trouble and scourge. P. McGlashan.
