To Our Friends.—Wc issue this

the TImes. It will be thoroughly dis
tributed in this and adjoining counties
Wo arc publishing a paper ia the in
terest of South West Georgia. Our
whole aim is to build up and benefit
the country, to the extent of our abili
ty. We ask your aid and co-operation.
Our terms are low, every one can af
ford to pay a dollar or iwo for a home
paper. By a very slight effort 01
part of friends our subscription list
may be doubled.
We arrived in Macon last Thursday
morning, just in time to see the city
in commotion, and a gloom cast over
everybody by the sad announcement
that the most terrible railroad'acci
dent, that has been seen in many years
had just happened twelve miles below
Macon, three miles this ride of Seago
Station; and Dial four men had been
killed and several others horribly
mangled. The wounded soon arrived
and were put under medical attention
at once, in the gentlemens* saloon in
the car shed; they presented a terri
ble sight and crowds were soon gath
ered around to see them. The Ex-
B rcss Mcsscnger-and Mail Agent on
ic Columbus passenger train going
up, were in the car next to the enj
and were killed out-right The ot
a ero train bands, amongst them three
negroes.
The cause was from pure carlcssness,
the patliculars as near as we could
gather, were os follows:
On Thursday morning, an extra
fricgkt train with empty cars to dis
tribute alon" the road, started out
from Macon, just ahead of the Albany
regular frieght, aud.at Seago, eight
miles irom Macon, they meet the in
coming passenger train from Colum
bus, due in Macon at 7.15, and from
some cause unknown, the trieght train
did not stop at Seago at all, but pass
ed ou and had ouly gone 3 1*2 miles
before it met the other, going down
grade at fall speed. The conductor
O Hi is That for llow.—The co
nundrum now is, how the Radicals
come to lose Ohio. A friend sugges
ted the other day that they did uot
have Noyes (noise) enough.
We understand that ho is improving
though slowly. The effort will proba
bly confine him to his room for sever
al days.
A special train from Savannah pass
ed up the road with Dr. Charlton eu-
route to Bainbridgc, night before last.
11 c goes to investigate and dctcr-
mino the nature of the disease, which
has been so fatal there for the past
two weeks, and which is thought by
many to beycllow fever.
Ben Russell wants to sell the Dcra-
ocrat. It is a good opeuing for some
live thorough going Democratic editor.
Wo shall regret to nart with one who
has dealt such sturdy blows in defence
of the time honored principles of the
Democratic party, and trust that his
successor will keep up the good work
Ex. Senator, Pomeroy of Kansas, is
no sooner out of one difficulty than ho
is into another.
Oue of the hangers on around the
nations capital, fired three shots at the
manly breast of the Western Senator,
tho other day for the alleged reason,
that he, Pomeroy, had interested him
self too much in procuring the afore
said hanger on's wifi;, a situation in
one of tho departments.
Another one of the “trooly loil” one
Dunning, the son of the Post Master
in Atlanta, has Jay Cooked to the
amount of $6000.
Well the tax payers of the country
is able to foot the bill, tor this little
defitiency, together with the lew tri
lling millions, which annually go into
the great unknown and unfathomable
deficits, which regularly occur, among
the thousands of dishonest men, who
have been put in office to reward
friends and to punish enemies, without
any regard to fitness or fidelity.
Bainbridgc only lacks a majority of
one of liaviug yellow fever. Three to
two is the lost count among the Galens
of that place on the subject.
From what we learn there has been
• prevalent a very malignant type
billious fever, with some of the symp
toms of yellow fever, but not the Simon
pure “Yellow Jack.”
Wc trust that the cold wcuthor and
frosts, which have occurred in the past
few days may restore our sister city
her wonted health.
Yellow Fever.—According
the Albany News the Mayur of that
place upon information derived, aud
supposed (o he authentic, proposes
quarantine Bainbridgc and has ask
our authorities to do likewise. Y
interviewed the Mayor on the subject
yesterday evening. He had heard
nothing from the Mayor of Albany,
and knew nothing of the proposed
lion, until we showed him a copy
the “ News ”
Our authorities, both civil and med
fcal, do not think that thcro is nny
danger whatever cvcu, if the yellow
fever is in Baiubridge, which is doubt
ful. Our place is remarkably healthy,
scarcely any sickness whatever, and
no local cause for tho disease; conse
quently, our aulhorithies will throw
no obstacles in the way of travel be
tween tliis point and Baiubridge.
A Thriving Establishment.
In our columns this morning ap
pears the advertisement of Messrs.
McDonough & Balluntyne machinists,
iron and brass fouuders, whose exten
sive establishment is the very picture
of busy industry. The facilities enjoy
ed by this progressive firm enables
them to execute, iu the moat satisfac
tory and expeditious manuer, all or
ders in their line. The reputation
they have earned for the superior ex
cellence and finish of their work is scc-
oud to none iu the South: indeed,
denccs of their haudiwefok of au orna
mental character, in the way of irou
flouts, verandahs, railings, &c., arc
numerous in our city and fully attests
their skill. Their sugar mills and
pans, are deservedly popular through
out this section, have received the
first medals at several fairs, and are
said to possess many advantages over
other* now in use. They have a full
stock ot these mills on hand, and can
supply orders at brief notice. We
have only the verdict o! those who
have used them to sustain us iu sayiug
that they have never yet failed toaive
satisfaction. Tho firm makes a speci
ality of architectural irou works and
are prepared to fill all orders for iron
fronts lor stores and dwellings, veran
dahs, office and cemetery railing, of
the latest designs, aud at northern
prices. All kinds of iron and brass
castings are made at their establish
ment at short notice. The firm are too
well known aud stand too high in this
community to render a personal notice
necessary, and wo therefore confine
ourself to directing the atteotion of our
city and country readers to their thri
ving establishment. Our interior
friends will find it to their advantage
to deal with this firm, and our our city
readers who require anything in-their
line we fed assured that they need no
suggestion on the subject. They
know the firm and the establishment,
and il they need any thing will go

TbomasrUle—
found the other train had passed, he
knew they would collide, and got on
top of his train, took out his watch and
listened for the crash, which occurred
just 7 minutes after he arrived. He
said ho heard it perfectly plain, and
thought it might nave been heard in
Macon. The conductor was old mau
Mathews, an old hand ou the road,
and the engineer al£o was an old hand
aud considered safe. He told Mr.
Powers that he was the cause ot all
of il, and wished that it had killed him.
It is a clear case for the courts, and
we suppose they will be handled.
THE FAIR.
The time is rapidly shortening be
tween now and lire 4th day ot Novem
ber. Are the planters of the county—
tho ladies, upon whom so much de
pends in order to make the Fair
success—are the friends of the enter
prise at work as they should be ? The
indications are, that the Fair will be
largely attended from all the adjoin
ing counties. Let our people see to it,
that they have an exhibition worthy
the patronage ol our sister counties.
A very small effort on the part of all,
will insure beyond peradyenture
exhibition, which will reflect credit on
the society and the county. The en
ergctic and indefntgible President,
Col. Wright, ably assisted and secon
ded by lbo Board of Directors, are
straining every nerve; hut their efforts
although herculean they may be, will
be of no avail, unless tho people come
forward with the products of their soil
and labor; each contributing some
thing, swelling the whole into propor
tions, which will astonish even the
most sanguine, )Vc appeal to the citi
zens of Thomas couhty to come for
ward and help to sustain, nay even to
place on a firmer basis than ever be
fore, an institution which has already
been of incalculable benefit to the
county, and which bids fair to still
poiut to Thomas as the leading county
iu South West Georgia. The Direc
tors have published the heaviest pre
mium list yet offered by the Associa
tion ; they arc to be paid in cash.
In the absence ot a higher motive
the bare contest for the premiums
alone, should fill the buildings and
grounds to overflowing.
