Our lady readers will recognize iu «he picture drawn by our Fair enrres- omIi.ni, some of the many little do mestic infelicities, with which they :mv« to contend. If the Major had had the handling of that delicious scupper nong, wc doubt if it would have ever been sampled at the Fair grounds. Wc hope thnl other ladies in Thomas will follow the example of Mrs.dfogaJl the manufacture of this delicious wine. That Handsome Saddle.—Master Willie Dicky, son of 1*. II. We acknowledge our obligations to some of our German friends, for the pleasure of participating in one of the most pleasant affairs of the season, ou lost Monday evening at their elegantly fitted np room on broad Street. Tbe affair was strict ly impromptu, but went off in that pleasing agreeable manner, with which the cultivated German, knows how to invest a social gathering. It is only necessary to say that Prof. Walcott handled the bow, and that Jp Foss made himself distinctly heard. , Jit 12 x.,. the members of the clfxL served their guests with refresh ments which would have striated ' TOE FAIR. :r ** In order to present our readers at the earliest possible moment, with the award of premiums, we omitted in our list issue to notice many of the ex hibitors and their displays; but which we now piopose to do. We found it im]HWsible to gel at the uames or mauy of the exhibitors, us oil articles were only numbered, *o that if, as is the case, any are omitted the forego ing explanation we trust may prove diploi satisfactory. The well known firm of Salomon Cohen, Savannah, was represented by some fiue vehicles, oue of which, his no-tojf buggy, showed the blue ribbon. Mr. McDonough, of McDonough & llalantync, Savannah, had on exhibi tion an improved sugar mill, put up at their extensive works. Mr. Mc Donough besides being a most success ful manufacturer, is an accomplished musician, and made himself very pop ular with every one with whom he met Mr. Lancaster, of that populai house of Jno. M. Cooper A Co., aided by Mr. Cauou. bad a superb and costly collection of books, stationery, etc., including everything in the line of literature, from a ponderous essay, down to Mother Goose. Mr. I* made himself quite popular among the la dies, the inquiry not being uufrequent, “Is he married?” We pass to our young frieud Hayden, representing I*. Macombcr & Co., who had on hand np elegant assortment of gents dress and toilet articles. Stepping across the hall, we are confronted with the richest and hand somest display of carpetings, window curtains, fixtures, etc., which hav ever l-cen seen inside these walls.- They are but samples of tbe immense stock of these goods always on hand by La tin op & Co., than whom there is no more reliable house North or South. Immediately in front ot the gorgeou. display of Lathrop tfc Co, we find Mrs H. L. Schreiuer surrounded by magnificent assortment of pianos, guns, violins, flutes, etc., among which we may mention tho Weber and Gab- It-r Piano, a lino imported organ with stops, also the famous Silver* Tongued organ, of which Mr. Schrein er is agent. Mr. Schreiner made a clear sweep of the premiums and di plomas. Wc hope to see him at our next Fair. Miss Katie Selig, of Savannah, had on exhibition a wonderful piece of handicraft ;n the shape of a rustic basket, evincing the skill as well as taste of that young lady. In the stock department, we noticed that Leon county, Fla., was well rep resented by Mi. T. J. Roberts and Mr. C. I*. Davis, the former exhibit ing a tine Duiham lull and the latter a two year old bull, common Slock, which bore off the blue ribbon as did also, Mr. Roberts* bull. Well done Leon. Mr. Joo. X. McKinnon, look a XX on his thoroughbred 3 year old bull. Col. McIntyre had a fine pen of cat tle, illustrating what our people may do in raising slock if they will try. >V. C. Eason had the finest beef, cattle; there were others but we could not learn by whom entered. As will bo seen by reference to pre mium list, Thomas county successfully competed with other sections for pre miums ou horses. Mr. T. B. Simkius* of Fla., and Mr. W. H. Mims, of De catur, carried off some very handsome premiums on stock; and we trust they will be with us again next year. A Fair could not be carried on well without the Nmiihs, at least would have felt the absence of Messrs, W. Sf. & J. S. Smith, whom, it will be seen pocketed some very handsome figures od their stock. The associa tion has had no firmer friends than the Smith boys. Mr. Willie Hopkins, aud Messrs. Pringle and Eason, took premium*; the latter on the best pair of matched horses. Our young frieud W. II. Mc- Elvm also came in for a tweuly, on best marc 4 years old and over. Mr. ileatd exhibited a fine harness horse which deserve* special nunliou, as also did Dr. Glower s pair of mules. Mr. Kirkuian also, showed some fine mules ; nor would we forget to men tion the iffijpr'P jack, whose stentori an voice was ohiiMCs raised Jiigli above the diu and noise on the grounds He '.riel to out bra> the Great Eas (era's Steam Piano, but his steam g;*vp out first; ariiamcd of his failure and disgrace, i»*i *npa!:ed into the farthest corner of his stall nor would lie essay again to raise his luucful ojee. until the piano was well on way to serenade Callabi^, of the Inde pendent at Quitman. Tire exhibition of swine, while largo in uumbers, was very respect able iu so for a* the individual pork ers were concerned- (L’apt. pav Dixon Carroll and Mr- Sam m l John son, ali look premiums. Thpre were others entered which we would like notice, but not knowing names owners we fiass ou to the i>ouUry. Here wc find I con county ngair the pCfepfli pf*.\ P- Davi% Esq., and Mr. Thus. J. Roberts, wup the blue emblem fluttering from their coops: tire former on the best pair of game chickens, fipd the latter on the liest pair Houduus. Mrs. H. »j*. Davis, Mrs. Jos. S. Smith, Mr. Jno. McKinnou and others, had some very flop bjrds on exhibition, which the premium list frill plain. Mr. W. M. Smith had on exhibition, a lot of wsgoqs, buggies, etc., which would have been creditable, if entered by any dealer in the Mate. This ea- t.obljslupept is one of the institutions of the place, and *boald receive a lib eral patronage at tbe tbe band* oi our people. Messrs. Jergcr Sc Pro., with their ac customed energy, l.ad a fine display of silver and plated ware, all tbe latest styles aqd poypltjes, iu jewelry, inclu ding bracelets, ear ring#, bpooches, »their fanx»us*llagna ware, including Charta. These gentlemen deserve more than a passing notice. They contributed liberally and largely, to .tot display and we' do not doubt, bui ib-it iheV'will be well patroutzedlhere- for by a discriminating public. Mr. W. C. Eason, hmP on exhibit tioO an improved horse power, which was favorably commented ou by ex perts, and for which he was awarded a rt5*ssrp»aR j a'a.ntiMW-c.-- rorabij commented an . i we bid ad ten to oar kind guide tbrongh.tbe devious ways of croc net, needle, and other fancy work, and take ourselves to the hall across the way, wherein are displayed tbe ttw- >ulls of the sturdy planter's labor.* Here we find a magnificent display •fSpauhli potatoes by E. 1«. McGlashrtu had a splendid dismay of saddles, bridles, harness, buggy material, etc*. All of lire former Irefug bis own work. A glance at bis crowded store a->d busy mechanics, convince the most skeptical that there is the place to bay saddles, bri dles or anything in that line. In the department of fancy work, embroidery, eta, we acknowledge our obligations to a lady friend, who, dee■ roned us through the maze* of the many perfectly exquisite specimens fair woman's work, wbi adorned the East side of the hall.— Here were many things of rare beauty, and to wldch wc feel our utter want of capacity to do justice. Tbe premium list will show most of these, but we proceed to notice some things which attracted out attention particularly. There were many otbera full worthy ot mention, and special notice, but we found it simply impossible to get sufficient data to write or say any thing about them, as no names were attached besides not being a family man wc were blissfully ignorant of tbe -liuicnl names and uses of many articles, aud so lest we commit a blun der, we have to piss, reluctantly however, over many specimens oi femiuiite handicraft; we first notice a perfect specimen of chirography hy Mrs. Barratt, Ibis lady also entered some very fine paintings. An ottoman by Mrs. Uirshinger, cl- egaul iu dcsigu and perfectly executed, excited the admiration of many. A yok^aml chemisette iu Spanish work by Mias Fannie Lane, who can only use oue hand, was among the most perfect specimens of this kind of work which were on exhibition. A shell necklace from the tropical regions of Indian river, showed an amount of care and taste in tho rangement, which was truly wonder ful; enpassaut we may here mention beautifully carved horn, from the same section eutcred by Mia. Sharpe, which was a wonder of paticuce, per severance and skill. To the lover of fiue and fiuishcd work, the specimens of embioidery u linen by Miss Sue Scott, of Florida, pupil in Young Female College, were among the most attractive of that class. Tire work not oni) showed fine conception iu design, but elaborate fiuish. Miss Sallie Mush had as a souvenir of her gtr.hood days, a beautiful cot tage, a real coxy little house, with handsome grounds attached, sur rounded by shrubbery, flowers, walks, etc. It w as one of the cottages— as a lady friend remarked—where if pov erty went in at the do<*r, love could not fly out at the window, for it had uouc. A sola cushion iu worsted No. 57; for design and finish was not excelled hy anything w|»|c|* we w*. Wo could not |earn the masers name. Also, lamp mpt, No. 454, was most elabo rately and tastefully beaded, showing on amount of care aud labor in mak ing. and which nothing less than the blue emblem” which was attached to it, would have been compensation. The premium ti.ly 298, was a!so- to quote from one of our fair friends who was admiring it—perfectly spleudtd.” The half dozen pair socks by Mrs. Mitchell, which took the $25 gold pre mium at the Statu Fair, were greatly admired by all and justly so, for tin y were pf np cojnmop kim]. The Mexican work ou exhibition by Mrs. Hazard Hall, was greatly a«l< mired for it* artistic finiab. Wc will not alien pt a description of it, 'twould puzzle a fariiiou plate maker. Mrs, A r m?trong showed sonic clu- oey lace with the modm Vmf» at tached »how ing how the lorin* these onderful, intricate meshes, and which none but a woman's fingers could ever trace. The specimens would l»av compared tovornfoy with tpp )ip- po.ted “L'luuey.” Mrs. Krnpp, of Savannah, showed a perfect genr of a pattern ot Iloniton lace, of the most exquisite finish, ued at ;j$. This i iece of lacc was greatly adnriretl by all the lidic* of course, whilst not a few of the stern pause-1 aud gaz*nl upon it a rniringlv. Miss Cyuthia McLean showed beautifully embroidered handkerdiit f. which exhibited the skill of the fair worker, qo less than the taste dis played iu the design. Miss Emma Mitobejl placed on ex hibilfoi) some elegant design* aud S( eciutens of her needle work, them “a perfect love” of a pin-cushion, pendant from which we notice the blue ribbon, which marked it **«rcel- sietf* $fr?. 0 R- t$«x»lt cootril*utonl lo this part of the display by a most elegant aud handsomely embroidered child's dress, and over w Uich, all youog mothers jyent iplo testacies. Miss Octa Chairet showed some the finest specimens which we have ever seen of imitation of embroidery, besides ;\n embroidered handkerchief, which reflected the highest credit on her taaic and skill. In the department of quilts, cover lets, etc., we noticed a very handsome silk quilt, $a. 2Q7; a)«o, an elegantly designed and executed woolen one No. 371, both of which were worthy ol special notfoe. No. lit, a patch werk quilt by a girl ncider 16 (we did not learn her name,) was a marvel of skill and de sign. Ike log cabin worsted quilt No. 133, 4&d which took a premium, certttfqjj taxed the fUU and genius of the tjjpr builder to l^e utmost. K?s. Parrqmofe hq4 oq exhibition eMA# woolen coverlets, which for nnist* and durability, were one jualicd.— Mi. J. A. Bullock has some of his famous gar den peas. T.iey wi re tl e recipient of some deserved compli ments. Ht-re too was to be set-u samples tf ludge Ilar.lawuy'n premium acre of corn, aud ted rust proof oats. Messrs. Carroll and Philip*, showed some v« rv fine cano. Mr. L. Jergcr hod some fins turnips and beans. Drcyer & Isaac shower* some splen did rustproof oats. There was a creditable display of form pnslucts. \\ e noticed corn, oats, peas, beans, turqips, cane, and in fact very nearly all the products of our soil, but from the difficulty of getting at the exhibitors names, we have to omit the notice of many of these crops, which deserve sp- cial mention. Mr. Henry bauford had some fine healthy, specimens of various kinds of fruit tree* from 1 it nursery. Mr. John S*ark exhibited some of his grape cuttings and wines. The premium boquet by Miss SSlie Stark, was a perfect gem, combining many of the rarest flowers, wove and blcuilcd together, with such touches of taste aud combination of tints and colois, as to challenge the admiration of all. There were several other very rich and degas t bouquets which were greatly admired. We here close our Recount of the Fourth Annual Fair. We could write much more did space and lime per mit, and thon fall short of doing jus tice to the occasion. We extend, and in do- but reflect the sentiments ol our whole people, our warmest sympathies to our neighboring town, and beg to assure them, that whatever can be done for them, will be douo in Thom as ville. Personal. - Tho Hon. Joseph IL Sloss of Alabama spent several days in our town last week. He has se lected our place on account of its health, and superior advantages, os a winter residence for his family. His accomplished lady aip] ‘luuglx- ter are stopping at the “West End House.” Air. Slow* is oue of the true representative men of the South. Bora and raised in Alabama, he em igrated to Illinois in early life, where tho state of bis adoption conferred high legislative honors upon h\*n. But the finery rioutls jf war darken ed the fair sonny skies which beam 'd on liis early home, and with that noble instinct, which cliaracterizcd every true son of the South, he left his peacefnl^ prosperous Western home, and cast his lot with the op pressed, vindicating the Uonur of itc South from 61 until Go, in tho tented field. At the election for the 42nd., Congress, Mr. Sloss beat his Iiadi- cal opponent,Mastertou, over two to one, thus showing that the people wfcfo not ungrateful, if ltppablics arc. He has hoen-elected again to tho 43rd., Congress.
