It our readers were not familiar with
the almost Inspired writings of the

the .foregoing quotation, is the argu

during the present session; iustead of
attempting to bolster-op ’ by specious
sophistry, what is universally con
demned by the people, aud regarded
u?* little short of actual theft.
Iu his haste to address the house,
be has essayed to champion cause,
which reeks with rottenness and cor
ruption. 7/c attempted to justify the
action of a set of men, who agreed
w ith the people, to serve them for so
much per annum, and then increased
their own pay; voting themselves five
thousand dollars each, of the peo
ple's money; to which, whatever may
be said to the contrary, they had not
even the shadow ot right. And yet,
Mr. Stephens has seen fit, to make
his debut ou the floor of the house,
after un absence from the legislative
halls of the country, of fourteen years,
and attempts, the vindication of this
unwarranted transaction, when he
knows, that Georgia, will assuredly
pudiatc every representative from
the Kmpiic Slate, who voted ayo ou
that bill, as that another election shall
around, provided they shall oiler
themselves.
These same men, might take it into
their heads, to vote themselves five
thousand dollars apiece again. They
would have just as nincli right to do
so at the next session, as they had at
the last. We Gust however, that
member of Congress, who wilfuMy
violated his contract with liis constit
uents, and voted himself the famous
“back pay,” will ever have another
oppoilunily of abusing their confi
dence. AU the arguments in the
world will not change black to white
—will not chaugc a mean action into
a good—will not make wrong right.
The mighty voice of the American

Liberty I/all, w ill find as lie did one
year ago, when lie tried to control the
democratic masses in Georgia, and to
wean them from their allegiance to
the part)', because A. II. Stephens,
saw proper to differ with the party;
Mr. Stephens will find we say, now as
then, that lie cannot dictate to the
Democratic party. Mr. Stephen'!
seriion that both parlies arc alike re
sponsible for the paisage of the bill,
is an assumption which the facts in
the case will not justify. We have
always been under the impression,
that the party in power, more .espe
cially, where the majorities were sc
overwhelming as in the last Congress
were responsible for shaping the legis
lation of the country. Does any one
suppose for a moment, that
Radicals, with their party drilled like
automatons, could not have prevented
the passage of tins shameful measure
It is presuming on the intelligence of
the people to argue the question. Mr.
Stephens classification of demagogues,
will hardly pass muster with the hon
est, laboring, thinking men of the
country. It may lie very gratifying to
these political mountebanks, jugglers,
tumblers and demagogues, to find out
that they are statesmen; but the intel
ligent people will he slow to believe it.
Taking the effort of this distinguished
gentleman altogether, if he is quoted
correctly, it falls short of what his
many friends and warm admirers, ex
pected ofliiiu, on his rc-entrancc in
to public life. One filing wc wish to
protest against, aud that is, Mr. .Ste
phens' intimation, that the democratic
parly are equally responsible for this
back pay business, they have unhes
itatingly in all llicir public meetings,
East, West, North and South, con
demned the measure in the stlongest
terms. I he key to the unprecedented
success which lias crowned the party
iu the late elections, are mainly due
to this decided stand. Wc protest
under these circumstances, against
Aleck Stephens, or any one else, say
ing that the lesponsibility of this foul
measure lies equally at our door.—
The idea ot a hamlfull of democrats,
passing this bill over the heads of au
immense majority, aud forciug these
canting hypocrites, to pocket that
$5000, is as absurd and groundfe.-s as
it is unreasonable; and Mr. Stephens,
either knowingly or unknowingly,
places the democratic party in a false
position, when lie says that the party
is equally responsible.
Disaster at Sea.
We are again called on to record
ouc of those scenes which makes us
shudder at the bare recital. The splen
did French steamer the Ville du Havre,
the largest ship afloat excepting the
Great Eastern, left the pert of New
York a few days since, with two hun
dred and eighty souls on board, inclu
ding many persons of distinction in
both church and state, and a large
number of ladies. When almost in
sight of’thc shores ol the cld World,at
*2 o'clock on the morning of the 23rd,
this steamer was struck amid shij s ly
the British' ship I.oclfeafn, and went
to the bottom of the ocean in 12 min
ute* afterwards, carrying with her one
hundred and uincty three persons. who
had becu dreaming in fancied secu
rity as the ocean monster dashed Tor-
ward over waves aud billows, driven
by her powerful machinery toward her
haven. Is there no way ot guarding
the lives ot ocean passengers more se
curely ? Are we to have the wail cf
hundreds ot drowning victims wafted
to us by almost every breeze that
comes from the. Atlantic ? This col
lision took place in an open sea. and
uuder a clear bright aky, with ample
light to sight au approaching vessel.
There must have been criminal negli
gence somewhere.
the constitution now stands, Georgia
may be involved hundreds of millions
in-a year or two; owners of cit, ~
erty ruined by the vote of Ai
aud whites more trifling than the ne
groes. I simply suggest the points. Of
course there are others of importance
to be attended to. I regard this ques
tion of u convention as one of the most
critical and important that has ever
arisen in the State.
The above from that uflinching arid
true Georgian, //on. Augustus R.
Wright, sounds the true note of the
situation. There are other, and ques
tions ot greater magnitude involved,
than that of the location of the Capi
tal. Every patriot in Georgia should
riss above local prejudices, in the mat
ter. What say the Press of the Slate
on this subject, speak out gentlemen?

Economy, England vs The Uni
ted States.
Are our readers aware that with all
our Republican slmplicty; that our an
nual expenses have grown troni the
modest figures which once character
ized the expenditures of the govern
ment, to be almost equal to the annu
al budget of the British government?
That Government supports the finest
navy io the world, equal to ours, and
a half dozen others like it, and keeps
a standing army more than five times
as large as ours; keeps np her colonial
dependencies, expends billions annu
ally, In rendering England impregna
ble, from the rising to the seltinj
the sun; besides, she pensions and
supports a long line of royalty, from
the Queen down, al’owing fabulous
sums to each member of the royal
family. Yet her expenses are but
fraction more than ours. Where is the
solution to be found of this great dif
ference. It is to be found iu this sen-
sentence: //oncsty in the administra
