It is also a little singular what a wonderful effect the store where you have made the purchase has upon the fit of the article. ■ 1 have known a plan to go back three times with a coat* The first time it pinched him a little under the arms. Hie dealer hail him lo try it on; then pulled it flown in the back, stooJ off and squinted at it, and then *said r “IIow does that feel now?” The roan, perspiring at cveiy pore, and feeling that he was guilty, ID some way, of taking unfair advantage of a trusting fellow mortal, confessed it was much belter and went off. The next day he appeared, with the impression that there was no wool in the cloth; his wife said so. The sales man gave him such a pitying glance, and whipped the coat over from one side to the other so rapidly, and talked so last about texture and wool, that the miserable wretch was glad to gut the garment back, and get out ol the store. Two days later, lie sucked in again Artlrw in^ with the coat under his arm. This time it pinched him across the back. The tailor had him try it on again, and then rubbed it across the back and pulled it at the front, aud said Ik never saw anything fit like ihat in hi* life; and the man went off with a sim ilar belief. Ho didn't go back any more; but lie used to stand in front ol that store, when no one was looking, and shake his fist through the window ut the tailor, and thiuk up the thing* he wanted to do to' him, but which appeared no immediate prospect o: doing.—Danbury Ntu-s. The Spirit of Discontent. The other day we stood by a cooper who was playing a merry tunc with ad/, round a cask. *Ah,’ said he, ’mine is a hard lot— forever trotting like a dog—driviug a ln»op.” ‘Heigh ho,’ sighed the blacksmith, on a hot summer day, as he wiped tiic perspiration from his brow, while Hie red iron glowod ou the anvil; ‘this is life with a vengeance—melting and frying one’s self over a fire.* ‘Oh, that I was a carpenter,’ ejacu lated a shoemaker, ns he bent over his lapstonc. ‘Here 1 am, day nftcr day, wearing my soul aw ay making soles for others—cooped up in this little scvcn-by-ninc room. Hi-ho-hu!'* ‘I'm sick of tills out door work!’ ex claimed the brick-layer; ‘boiling un der the sweltering sun or exposed to the. inclcmcney of the wcalhor. Would that mine were a more active life.’ * ‘Last dn7 of grace!?-banks won’t discount—customers wont pay—what shall 1 do?’ grumbled the merchant: 1 had rather be a truck-horse, a dog or nnything else.’ ‘Happy fellows '.’groans the lawy ns he scratches his bead over some dry musty records; ‘happy tellows! 1 had rather hammer stoue all day than puzzle my head on these tedious, ntious questions.” Aud through all the ramifications of society all aro complaining of their condition, finding fault with their call inir. ‘If it were only this, that or any other, 1 should be content,’ is the vcrsal cry. ‘Anything but what I am.’ So wags the world; so has it wagged, and so it will Wag. Col. Hardeman, in a recent speech on the agricultural prospects of Geor gia, maintained that the State was steadily progressing in wealth. The lost year’s crop of cotton in Georgia was far in excess of any former year, eveu during the existence of slave lnb9r t . He dcuounced the prevalent pracltco ot raising too mnch cotton, nnd urged farmers to raise their own meat, and other supplies forborne He said that speculative farming, staking all upon cotlon, while it in ” creased the general aggregate of bales produced rendered the producer no better oft—if he did not live at home, and draw his own supplies trom the same source. 7/e urged farmers to teach their daughters that it was more honorable in them to attend to house hold duties, and wear plain calico, than to fiourish around watering places in silks taught with money borrowed from factors, thus neglect ing home prosperity, and home indus- 17- Too Truk.—Ouo of the melan choly things io this world is to see young women married and unmarried, walking the streets dressed far beyoud the|r tnenns, aud so poor that if they were to die their husbands nnd iheir fathers would he unable to pay for n meUliecoflin in wbicn to bury them.
