Found Dead.—A negro who it seems had bcca on a bust for several days, was found dead on the Bailroad bridge across the Ocholocknee, on day before yesterday. Judge Merrell em- panncllcd a jury of inquest, and pro ceeded to the place where after due examination, and deliberation, they decided that the deceased came to his death bjf kn apoplectic fit. Lett* iiMd.' ud l«l»t fumtabnS •ADd. ■ tl JUDGE JAMES T. HAYES. -A. will be seen elsewhere, this old and well known citizen of our county is before the people, as a candidate for the office cf Ordinary, made vacant by the death of Judge Tooke. Judge Uaycs is too well known to the citi zens of Thomas county, to r.eed any endorsement at our hands. His quali* fications may be summed up io two words. He is honest and capable.— Ho has been known for long }*ears, and his is no doubtful record. Per fectly conscientious iu the discharge ot every duty, swerving neither to the right nor to the left, lie has ever pur sued a course, both in public and in private, ot which any citizen might be Justly proud. Judge //ayes possesses in an eminent degree, that sterling, and unyielding integrity, in public officials so essential to the proper dis charge of the duties of office. Of one thing the citizens of Thomas county may be assured, that if he is elected to the office, that it will be adminis tered, faithfully and honestly; that the interests of the people, will be sacredly and zealously guarded. We hear several other candidates spoken of, but hope that better coun sels may prevail, and that, as thiBis no political question, but purely one of fitness, that Judge Hayes* past ser vices to the county, and his well known qualifications for the position to which ho aspires, may entitle him, as we be lieve they will, to the support ot a ma jority of ihe citizens ot the coun ty. The Supper at Mr. Baker’s.—In Ken of a Christmas tree, as was orig inally, intended tho members of the Presbyterian Sunday School, were given a supper at the residence of the superintendent, Mr. John E. Baker, on Christmas Eve. We arrived after our youug friends had doubtless dono justice to the splendid supper spread by the com mittee for the occasion, and found still enough left on tho table to have fed another Sunday School. It was a pleasant gathering and the participants will long remember tho evening and the occasion. If ibis kind of thing is to be annual, we arc a candidate for that school. Christmas has come and gone. Wc do not remember to have ever seen a more thoroughly consistently, disagreeable day. A cold, steady dri ving rain, allgd&y long, without a mo ments intermission; enforcing the ne cessity of every one eating their own Christmas dinner; as it was next to impossible to get about. But we will not fall out with the day, for around old. Christmas, are entwined some of tho tenderest memories: around aud closely to it clings, many of the len- dercst thoughts, which come welling up from the past. God bless Christ mas with all Us fond memories say Tho Ld article on Meal advertising, Mewing: A man came along here same time <ii>c*,'*kti A tbw®WKSt« :ta a MK, and propowdto pttteMffa the po.t- office, so folks conM see bow hot it was. As a special'favor he permitted a number of tmineaa men to put cards around the thermometer, by paying the tberpnometer man a certain amount m cash. Among the adver tisers per thermometer, were seveial who have ignored the city newspapers as a means of advertising for a long time. One of them, who bad let the newspapers alone, but had accepted outside propositions to spend ten dollars in advertising, stopped the editor the other day, And remarked that he had just got in Ihe j— » dst stock of goods that ever was, and that his prices were so low that it almost made him sick to think of giving things away. He said hs wanted a nice local notice, setting the thing up in big shape. The editor looked at the man a moment, .the tears trickled down his cheek—for he hat got cheek —and he said: ’I’ll tell you what I will do. I will write you a splendid local notice, spreading it on as thick as I know bow, and you just take it and stick it on that thermometer at the postoffice, where you do your advertising.’ ,Thia may be a fable hot it might be true. » Pinchback.—The New Orleans Fickayunc, with a view to show the fitness of the mulatto, Pinchback, for a seat in the United states Senate, is giving some interesting ( incidents in that individual’s caieer. The first one (which is sufficient) Is taken from the records of the u workhouse penitentiary,” New Orleans, as fol lows: “May 28,1862.—Pinckney Finch- back, 24 years old, 5 feet 9 inches high Mack hair; occupation a laborer, iu-. terparate habits; and under a head of remarks, classed u smsrt.” Committed under a conviction before Provost Judge J. M. Bell for larceny, and sen- tentenced to the penitentiary two years.” With such credentials, Pinch has nothing to fear from the Badical ma jority iu the Senate. A dry-wttted soldier ot the tenth Vermont during the war, was heard to pray once when the bullets were tail ing in showers, as follows: “O, Lord make me as thin os a knite.” Bring your Job work to the Times office for neat work and low prices.
