MY TRIP TO CAIRO.
Messrs. Editors.—Having busi
ness of an official character in the
Western part of the County, your cor
respondent in company with a legal
friend, took the early Baiubridge train
on Wednesday morning last, tor the
fair village of Cairo; where we arri
ved in good lime for breakfast. .Situ
ated upon the Western border of the
county in a healthy ond fertil section;
this flourishing town is growing in
population and bids fair at no distant
day to rival Tbomasviilc and Baiu-
biidge m wealth and importance.
The inhabitants of Cairo and that por
tion of the county generally are’eom-
posed of some of our staunchest and
most reliable citizens. Uupreteudiiij
iu manners, and honest iu their dei
ings, with all the world, a stranger
coining among them will receive a
genuine, old fashioned, Georgia wel
come; und departing retain-a most
favorable impression of their kindness
and hospitality.
duch was our reception, and not be
ing strangers it is not surprising that
wo had a good lime generally. Our
companion liaviug his pointer along,
a bird hunt was gotten up for his spe
cial benefit, the writer as before sta
ted, being detained by business at Cn-
rio. but it is of that hunt that we
propose to write, and in order to con
vey to your readers a fair idea of the
same, we will give a list of the hunters.
First on the list comes our worthy
judicial friend Squire Wm. Bryant,
and his Bailiff, Moee Maxwell, then
S A Dickey, the popular Clerk and
Tr’s of this embryo city (everybody
Jcnows Shack.) our former young fel
low citizen Tom Scott, and last but
not least, our lawyer with his dog.
Time passed on and wc could oct
Mbn&lly hear a shot like irregular
picket firing in the distance, and anon
our ears would be saluted with a per
fect volley aud wc concluded they had
jumped nothing less than a tiger.
Towards noon Shack came in, dis
playing cxaultiugly, a bag containing
about a dozeu birds, of an assorted
character. There were larks, doves
robbins, blue jays, yellojv hammers,
and a few partridges, which strange
to relate were still alive, trhfch ar-
roused tlie suspicion that he had slyly
robbed some boys partridge pen, and
had forgotten to wring the nicks of the
bird*.
After a while the others came in
and reported, quite a crowd was wait
ing to hear the result, and as the hoys
came up there seemed to be considera
ble excitement among them, over
what purported lobe a wild cat. Ihe
tninral in question was skiuned and
with its short tail appeared to be
about six months old. in order to ful
ly decide the question, and do justice
to all.parties, a jury of inquest was
immediately summoned, consisting of
Judges James T. Haves,Geo. T. Hurst
Dr. Wilinont, Messrs. Ilisler, Mash,
Harrell, aud Wiggins.
The evidence had in the case, was
as follows: The party having come
near a gaul berry head, the dog begau
to display his qualities and suddcnlv
came to a dead set; this caused much
suppressed exqitemeut among the
hunters, and forming into line with
guns cocked, they cautiously avanced,
but our friend Joe's feelings got the
better of him, os was occasionally
manifested in a smothered yell. The
dog finally flushed his game, which
having broker, cover, a volley was
fired into the thicket, causing the ani
mal to take a tree.
The cxcitemeut at this important
crisis, knew no bounds, friend Joe
could restrain himsclt no longer, but
charged around atnoug the gaulbcrrv
bushes, yelling like u camanche.
Amid the uproar, Squire B. aud tlie
bailiff advanced, took two deliberate
shots, and down dropped the cat.
The Jury after mature deliberation,
decided as follows: . First, that the
eat came to bis death at the bands of
•Squire B. Secondly, that from the
place where the cat was founed it was
evidently a wild cat, and thirdly as
Parson Harris had recently lost a
house cut iu the neighborhood, the
animal in question was a regular
mouser. It was Airther decided that
the heroes in this cat'otrtphc, and
the man who captured the birds should
treat to tire best Old Rye that could
be found in the place; wbieh was im
mediately done, and the remainder of
our sojourn was passed most pleas
antly, until the arrival of the train.
'V c shall ever remember with de
light, our trip to Cairo, and should
that thriving town live as long in his
tory as its ancient namesake, the Cat
hunt will remain one of its most
pleasant traditions.
Least Expected.
