Yes, dr, I know lots of men who
Trill start up in bed and shiver and
iawear i^•,tam•«at,prow-
_e^• the garden - fence, but
sjaws and utters, one fiingle
yelL On the contrary, the midnight
cat never disturbs me. In fact, I like
to lay and listen to the music of a
dozen cats holding mass convention
on the garden fence.
As the first cat breaks out I heave
a sigh and wonder if the world would
not bo as well off without .cats; but
I dou’t get mad. Some mefc tare
around and declare that they w'll
never deep again until they have
killed every cat within a circle of
four-hundred and fifty miles; and
4hothing will soothe them.
After the third yell I wonder if it
would not be Just as well if some bad
boy should buy an ounce of arsenic,
u pound of meat, and distribute the
two around in the back yards, but I
don’t go further. Some men jump
out of bed and yell:" ‘Where in thun
der is that boot-jack—where’s a
club?” And "they rush to the door
and sling dubsrt nd yell “scat!” *and
wuke every body in the block.
After the fifth yell, I wonder if I
* had not better raise the window and
;i$k tho cats to adjourn around the
block, on account of my wife’s ner
vousness, but I don’t get mad.
Some men allow their hair to come
rignt up, fall over chairs, stump their
toes against tho stove and exclaim,
“Helen Blazes, but won’t I sicken
those felines?”
By and by the cats cease howling
and my eye-1«d« begin to ache I am
rapidly loosing consciousness when
the old Maltese rises to a question
of order, and the opposition com
mence* yelling him down, He yells
back, and I go up to see what time
it is, and then wonder if it wouldn’t
be as well for me to go out there and
explain matter*, and entreat tho Con
vention to go down the fence .to the
grape arbor. Mind, I don’t run
around after tho sh6tgun, and wake
up my wife and ask her for powder
and old nails and broken gloss, and
bark my shin on the stove hearth
and call out: “I’ll kill a million cats
to pay for this!”
Maltese yields the floor, and the
convention goes ahead in an orderly
manner. I imagine that the busi
ness which called the crowd togeth
er lias been disposed of, an creep
back to bod. My wife wakes up
and wants to kuow what I got up
for, and I tell her I was after tho
)>cppennmt for my neuralgia,
some men would lay and jaw and
fume for an hour, and finally get up
and fight with their loving partner.
I iunt dose my eyes to sleep when
old Maltese offers an amendment to
some motion, and the opposition go
for him again. He yells back, spits
at them in scorn, oml they fall upon
him. He 1 nicks under my window
and stands at bay. I creep out of
Inal and seizo a club, but drop it.
again as I remember that I am not
mud. It would perhaps be well to
step to the door, and throw tho lx>i-
Jer, and the wood box, and the cup
board, and the ax, and the* woodpile.,
and the whole summer kitchen at
the aits, but I refrain, mul merely tip
on the window, mid urge old Mal
tese to cover himself with glory.
Some men would grab up the table
or sofa, or the first thing handy and
ejaculate: “I’m a sinner if I don’t,
murder something or somebody!’
Years of observation have convin
ced me that tho general antipathy
to cats is entirely unfunded.—M.

"Wo have many a rough diamond

iio: “After all that fine dinner they
I n ought in some glass bowls, with
water and a piece of lemon in each.
1 supposed it was lemonade, and as
we had been drinking many kinds
< f wine I was glad of it, for I was
i liirsty. But when I went to taste
It I found it so sour that I asked
for sugar. Tho ludies appeared to
‘ mo to be smiling at something, but
I scarcely knew what. Afterwards
I was told they were finger bowls to
rinse one’s hands in. But, John,
nobody washed tlieir hands after I
drank my lemonade. I call that
