. SAY OMTEttE.
. Time is coexistent with God, ana is
represented as an old man. Why, I can
not tell, unless perhaps, only in rela
tion to ourlityle planet irbteh is mate
rial; but time is immaterial and im
mortal, passing nice a winged circle,
Jgt^gjypUbexrboginnlng nor ending,
consequently must be as youthful to
day as in the primeval stages of uni
verse.
,, Our time will be confined mostly
Jo the transitory things of our mortal
¥ existence; hence will have time past,
1 present and future. Time is continu
ally building up and breaking down,
forever rising, phoenix like from the
ashes of the past Time matures the
embryo bud, bursts the enfolding
leaves and expands the flower: with
its beautifully delicate colors to the
morning sun, only to fade and lie
scentless on tbc ground ere the evo
ning shades lengthen o'er the land
scape; Urnes* losy heel envelopes the
new born infant with ail the glorious
prospects of power, wealth and fame,
still shining and altering onward, 'till
^the fully developed genius is expected
to realize our anticipatioae. When
.suddenly Time’s icy fingers touches
0*ts i victim—where now are a)L- tin
golden dreams that so late gladdened
L, tho fireside, and made cheerful the
household? swept by the mortal hand
of Time to Time immortal.
Thus we trace the footprints of past
Time upon every grain of sand, every
^ blade of grass, upon every earthly
thing. Principalities and powers have
risen «u<J~fhllen to decay, with scarce
ly odcaflet to tell when *qr where.
And yet to-day is tho saraothat it w
thousands of years ago, the same im-
f pulses; the same aspirations; the
• same earnest desire after an ever en
during famo throbs in the heart; the
same heedless care of the present and
preying forward to the enchanted fu-
’ ture, to penetrate whose vail many ol
us would sacrifice present happiness,
' just for one glimpse—hoping, we know
not for what.
Present Time, we think not of, hut
ever to the part or future. Thejoumr
contemplates the far off mountain
scuue, where the distauce mingles
with the ethereal transparency of
heaven. Tho old stands on the con
fines of earthly Time, while back flies
retrospection over the past, lifting
each shroud that has so long covered
in silence the inexperienced way ward-
liess of- childhood and more mature
youth. (Sadly glimmers the sparkle
in hi* eye. as he realizes the now won
derful goodness of God in having
formed a world so fair for man's en
joyment, and sighs with a pang regret,
that he finds too late the value of
present Time. Seize then the golden
moments of the present and let every
. one ho marked by some good act. Let
a the past and future take care of them-
' selves! the present Time is all we have
or ever can have.

Don’t Understand tiie Case.—
We observe that several of our con-
" temporaries who advocated the cal
ling of a Convention to revise the
Constitution, appear to bo entirely ig-
H corant of what has been done, by the
*■ lower blanch- of the Legislature on
that subject. Our friends of the N a-
con Ttleyraph, usually so careful in
“ their reading and stMements of fact,
are of this class. In Saturday's issue
of their journal, they speak of “the
gratuitous regection of the proposition
permitting the people to decido the
question for themselves at the ballot
box, in the fall elections.” "When, we
auk, did the House reject such a ni
position? The Journals do not sh<
any such vote nor even that such a
proposition has come before the House
during the present session. The bill
of Mr. Williamson of Baldwin—ihe
only one on the subject that has been
( acted upon—actually provided for the
election of delegates in April to t
State Convention to be held in May
and not lor the submission oflhe ques
tion whether a Convention shall be
held at all, to the people at the fall
elections. The various amendments
olfcred to the bill, wc think, did not
materially vary this proposition.
Such i» the record, and the editors of
the Telegraph will see that its idea of
“a disrespectful fling at the contituen-
v > cies. is all a myth, and the fancy of
their own brains. It is therefore, hut
just to the large majority of the House
upon whom a reflection is cast, that
the editors should acknowledge their
error and withdraw their charge.—
