This entertainment Inst Friday night,

glorious and fittmg./b/rde to I be cotn-

was very large, bat a nine! beautifully

in the important science of the “cui

sciences of which their Diplomas have
declared them to be Mistresses, and
tindctsUnd most thnmnghly how to
unite the useful and the beautiful.—
There was an array of Ix-auty and lovli-
too iu the halls, such as we are
seldom permitted to witness, and while
walchiiig the parlies in the gav prome
nade, we could sec passing glances
that spoke of hearts warmed up and
flames kindled, which all the ice
cream and lemonade so lavUhly
taken iu by the beaux of the. enemy
could not cool down, while ever and
anou wc could spy a couple iu some
window, niche or retired comer, who
seemed most seriously inclined, but
who remembered the Poet's advice to
“talk low if you talk love." We ex
pect lots of cakes and other printer's

this happy parly. We. saw many loo,
in the guy throng, who would not per-
liaps be classed among the “o’er
young,*’ those who wore the yoke of
11yroeii, but who at least tor that time
found it weigh too lightly to be gulling,
and seemed to enter into the pleasures
of the hour as hcartilv as the youngest
there. We are ail greatly indebted to
the young holies of the A-socialion for
much pleasure, and while returning
our heartiest thanks, wc most cordially
wish those of them already married,
long life* and happiness, and to each
of those who are in maiden meditation
fancy free, the additional blessing of
one worthy of her.

The ptiriwses of the organization
arc sufficiently made known by tlio

trust we may, without impropriety,
present a few.thoughts for. the consid

section, with a view to guarding them
against mistakes that may mult in
the obstruction of the immigration

Oue of the principal objects of the
Society is to induce a superior class of

gentlemen. Tlic' discipline of tnd
crew roust be maintained. In that,
and that alone lies our safety. Let
every inch of canvas be spread, j
known as ti prominent citizen of this
county, will visit his former home and
spend considerable time in calling the
attention of the people of that section
to the many varied and superior ad-
an'ages of our country. Mr. McK.
is eminently qualified for this, heiug a
gentleman of great intelligence ami
high moral worth, of dear, souuil aud
discriminating judgmeut, and hiw«c)f
a living example of the renovating, in
wc may say, rtjiictHalimj, in
fluence of our salubrious climate, aud
as be is earnest and enthusiastic on
tile subject in qmstiou we confidently
expect a very favorable and extensive
impression to be made by him among
his former people.
In the meantime. U is the purpose
of the Society to prepare tor general
distribution n pamphlet, betting forth
the vast inherent resource* of this
country with a gcueraal description of
the region, topographical and other
wise; particular description of places,
with character ot soil, natural grow’lli
and improvements on each; and table
of distances from different joints on
the railroads. There will also be ap
pended a list or scale of prices, indi
cated tor different lands, and, just here,
we would caution our people against
making a grave mistake. They will
probably be called upou to furnish
descriptions and prices of their places
or bodies of laud that they may bo
willing to sell. If the prices be placed
reasonably, purchasers will he easily
found; If,on the contrary, high figures
be named, the immigrants whose at
tention will have been drawn to this
country to such an extent ns to make
them desirous of settling here will pur
chase in other parts of tlio same sec
tion, where prices rule lower. In the
latter'event, instead of reaping quick
benefits and acquiring sudden wealth,
by the realization of exorbitant prices,
our short sighted people will have the
satisfaction of seeing otlici counties
profit by the efforts of our immigration
society, whih*they suffer from the re
active cfl'ecls of a narrow, grasping
jKilicy.
Let fair representations be made
and fair prices be charged, without the
expectation of being at ouee enriched
out of the very first invoice of immi
grants aud very soon, the increased in
flux ol settlers, indeed by the favorable
experience of the first comets, will re
sult in solid aud permanent benefit to
the whole county.

Wc have been informed that a
good many people iu the country
arc inquiring concerning the prob
ability of obtaining board in Cairo,
with a view to sending their chil
dren to school here. We are au
thorized to assure all who may feel
interested upon this subject that
ample accommodation* can be ob
tained in the village, in Lundies of
the highest respectability and upou
the most reasonable terms. Per
sons desiring further information
on this point, may obtain it by call
ing upon or writing tons.
Hon. Isaac Alderman is a close
observer of nature, as good farmers
generally are, aud he assures 11s
that whenever the “bull bats” fly
up in face of a seemingly approach
ing cloud and “commence serenad
ing it. it is a sure indication tlmt
there will be 110 rain from thut
cloud, or not enough to amount to
anything.” Our own observation,
since lie called our attention ’to the
fact, corroborates his assertion.
Did you ever, in your life, light
your pipe ;uid sit down, in your
shirt sleeves, in a cool place, with
your chair tilted back aud your
heels anchored on the baluster, to
enjoy a comfortable whiff, that tlio
pipe did not immediately go out '*
This is sure to In; the case aud the
event invariably produces a sooth
ing efleet, as it were, and ldls the
mind with the most pious reflec
tions.
There must U powerful dry times
among the i>onds up ahead, some
where, judging by the “nkcowk” of
the “slnke pokes' that nightly
cleave the air overhead, on their
way to the Iamouoe.
Bitterns must have frog* and
frogs must have water: no water,
no frogs: ov/,, f when the bitterns
leave a section, wc infer that the
ponds are drying up, which would
not be tie ease were tlu*re plenty of
rain.
