Thomanville is Hooded with melon*
and all kinds of vegetables. There
is no reason why in this favored
dime of ours this should not always
be the ease at this season.
Vegetable growers will be interest
ed in Judge Hardaway’s communica
tion elsewhere. We hope that he
will not forget his promised article on
.tomato culture.

marks that the next State Fair will
lie held in Thomasville*. Yes aud
we are going to make it tiw Centen
nial occasion in this cud of the
State.
We learn that Mr. James Walt Is
doing the Pacific elope iu style, and
hnving a good time generally. He
will return via Xc* York aud the
Centennial.
l)r. John II. Coyle, has bought the
vacant lot on Jackson St., next to the
Times office, and will erect a hand
some office thereon. IFe shall gladly
welcome the Doctor os a near neigh
bor. The properly was purchased
from Mr. M. Isaac.
The card of Charley Cooper ap
pears elsewhere. We are as ready to
accord him a hearing and an op-
portnnity to ally himself with the
Democratic party, as we were to con
demn his course when lending his
voice and influence to the radicals.
Wc have on exhibition in our of
fice a stalk of com grown in Mrs.
Col. Seward’s garden, which meas
ures thirteen feet high. The corn
has only been hoed twice, never
ploughed, and the soil not enriched
bv the use of fertilizers.
The Speaking To-Day.
There will be some brilliant and
telling speeches made to-day in the
Court nonse. The first guns of the
campaign will be fired. As there will be
a number of distinguished speakers to
be heard, wc hope that the people will
gather promptly and get through
with the work of the Convention, so
that the large crowd may have an
opportunity of hearing the great is
sues of the day discussed. In order
to do this, the meeting should ap
point a liberal committee from all
parts of the county to suggest suitable
names for delegates *o the Conven
tion iu Atlanta, and to the Congres
sional Convention. This will expe
dite business and give the speakers
time to be heard. And just here we
beg to make a suggestion, and that is
that a resolution be passed by the
meeting that uone of said committee
shall be nominated as delegates. This
course was adopted in Savannah and
gave general satisfaction. Lei us
have hannouy and unity. These are
the elements which constitute success;
without them, division, strife aud ill
feeling may be cngcndeied. This
must not be.
Health.
As wc arc passing through the heat
ed term, wheu animal and vegetable
matter if left exposed will quickly de
cay, it may not be amiss to call the at
tention ol the hoard or health to the
importance of seeing that all hack
yards aud other localities in the town
arc kept perfectly clean and tree of
any matter which might cngciuh r dis
ease. The town is perfectly healthy;
let us keep it so. A little precaution
a good thiug and should be heeded.
The health oY Thoniasvilli: is one of its
greatest advantages and attractions,
and it should be closely watched dur
ing the summer mouths by- thoj-e
whose business it is to do so.

A Mineral Spring.
Thomosvillc, not to be behind her
larger but not more ambitious and
progressive sister towns, Atlanta aud
Atheus, can boast of a veritable min
eral spring within a short drive of her
corporate limits. It is situated
the line of the A. <£. G. II. R., on the
place formerly owued by Abel John
son, but now in the possession of Dr.
McTyer, late of Brazil, South Ameri
ca. The Doctor has recently had the
water aualyzed by P. II. Mel!, Jr.,
State chemist, Atlanta, Ga. The an
alysis of the water at the spring
would no doubt show a much larger
proportion of minerals. The follow
ing analysis was made from a
small quantity ot the water which hail
doubtless lost much of its properties
owing to the long time which elapsed
(several weeks) before (he chemist
made his tests. The following U the

Mr. Editor: The doffing exercises
for the first term of Miss Lizzie Rai-
ford’s school at the above place came
off this evening. They consisted chief
ly of compositions by the young ladies
of the school, and music on the piano
and violin. The compositions were
very good, and reflect much credit on
the young composers. IVant ot space
must excuse a detailed account. The
eager throng that crowded flic hall
attested their interest io the occasion.
The examination exercises came off
yesterday. Your correspondent was
not present. Miss Lizzie has a flour
ishing school ot about thirty students
aud her efficient management, togeth
er with the rapid progress of her stu
dents, is sufficient evidence of her ca
pacity to leach them how to diinb up
the “ladder of learning.” May suc
cess attend her iu her laudable calling.
Save Tomato Seed.
Enrroit Times:
The tomatoes alluded to iu )our last
issue as exhibited by me, was simply
one stem, containing a cluster of seven
perfectly ripened fruit. It wras not the
size 1 intended to exhibit, but their
perfect ripening. After reading your
notice of the weight of Col. A. P.
Wright’s eleven tomatoes (eight
pounds) I selected cloven just gather
ed without reference to size or exhibi
tion, and they tveighed nine pounds.
1 have had a large number to weigh
one and a half pounds each, and one
pounders quite common. Notwith
standing the tomato is so extensively
cultivated and has become the chief
.standard vegetable, very few persons
save any seed. The best varieties
are thcTrophy Tilden and //atlmway’s
Excelsior; the latter, is smaller, but
ripens ten days earlier, and is superior
to all for perfection iu ripening, and
will weigh half i»ound each, which is
quite Jorge enough for tabic use. Care
should be taken in selecting them
lor seed. None but those perfectly
smootlie and round shape snould be
saved. The first crop is always the lar
gest and most perfect. Seed should
be saved from the earliest. They
should be fully ripe, gathered without
bruising, aud kept in the shade until
they ferment, the seed shouldjbe wash
ed out in cool water, and placed iu
the shade upon plates, boards or pa
per; newspapers are best, as they ab
sorb the water quickest. When thor
oughly dry*, they should be put
away in a tin box to prevent in
jury Irotu mice and rats. It re
quires six mouths to grow toma
toes to perfection, therefore tc
have them early, the seed should be
planted io a cold frame or hot-bed, iu
JVovembcr, and kept protected from
frosts and cold snaps during the win
ter and early spring. Upou the first
favorable occasion they should be
transplanted In tlio open air. If you
wish, 1 will prepare you an article ou
Tomato culture, in ample time to pre
pare for the next spring crop.
R. II. Hardaway.
N. B.—If you wish to cujoy a real
luxury, gef, sonic fully ripe tomatoes,
t ied them anil sw eaten v/jlfi su«rar,
lave ice enough to make them very
cold, aud add cream or milk, aud you
wil! have a dish the equal of milk and

The “Salutatory* by Master James
McKinnon, wa£ well delivered.—
Compositions were read by the fol
lowing young ladies in dear, dis

the house: Misses Honorene Mitch
ell, Julia Pugh, Zinah Hamblcton,
Fannie Joyner, Mary McKinnon,
Amelia Stripling, Annie Dnnbar,
Nettie Hambleton, Jennie McKin
non, Fannie Pugh, Qsoanna Mitchell
and Mattie English. Miss Emma
Mitchell then read the “Valedictory.”
The highly creditable manner in
which the young ladies acquitted
themselves dearly demonstrated
that Miss Raiford* is well qualified
for the position which die 1ms so

The music on the occasion by
Heath and Tomer on the violin, and
Mr. Edward Moore at the Piano,
added greatly to the interest of the
exercises.
