S ers, Nell trifled wlritb a sliadow-
ire on tho wall. Not satisfied
with playing alone, she would talk
to Annie, that mite of a figure in
gold and white, golden curls and
suowy gown, by the bed’s side.
“Now, Annie, watch!” “Annie
just see1” “Oh, Annie do look!”
she said over and over again.
Annie, who was not to be per
suaded, finished her prayer, and
crept into bed, whither her thought
less sister followed, as the light
must be out in just so many min
utes. Presently Nell took to flound
ering punching, and “oli-d earing. ’
Then she lay quiet awhile, only to
begin again with renewed energy.
“Wliat is the matter? asked An
nie.
“My pillow!” tossing, thumping,
kneading. “It’s as flat as a board,
and hard as a stone; I can't think
wlmt ails it.”
“I know,” answered Annie in her
sweet way.
“Wlmt?”
“There’s no prayer in it.”
For a second or two, Nell was as
still as a mouse, then she scramb
led out on the floor, with a shiver,
it’s true, hut she was determined
never afterwards to try to sleep on a
prayerless pillow.
“That must have been what ailed
it.” she whispered, soon after gett
ing into bed again, “It’s -all right

many pillows on which restless
heads, both little and big, nightly
toss and turn; there arc no prayers
in them. Nell’s remedy was the
best the only one. Prayer made
the pillow soft, and she sank to rest

A Itlun El Ic ven Years In Pris
on.
I Rome Bulletin.]
To-day we met in town, a poor,
maimed soldier, who has walked all
the way from Ohio, where he has
be 2n in prison ever since Atlanta
was taken in June, 18G4, l»y Sher
man.
His name is James Johnson; lie
ran away from his parents when
ly 14 years of age, entered the army
where ho served as a private, and
was shot through the hip in tlie
firght near Atlanta, where he was
captured. His wounds prevented
him from walking, and he has been
confined to a Northern hospital, de
nominated the “Jeff Davis,” in Ma
rion county, Ohio. He lias written
repeatedly and so have the other
prisoners, but no reply ever comes
back. He says the keeper of the
hospital—Rev. Stringer—is interes
ted in keeping them there, and de
stroys tlieir letters. The keeper
gets $2.00 a week for every prisoner,
and they are kept as prisoners, not
allowed to communicate with the
outer world and literally isolated by
their keeper from human sympa
thy.
There arc yet thirty-three maim
ed soldiers in this hospital, none of
them able to help themselves, or to
escape from their loathsome abode.
’Tis utterly borrowing to listen to
the account of their mode of life.
Mr. Johnson is trying to get to Tal
ladega, to see if lie can find any of
his kindred.
AVc have never heard anything
sadder than this poor man’s history
and we hope ho may, by the aid of
our citizens, be enabled to pay his
fare from here to Talladega, and
thus save him from a long and, to
his poor crippled limbs, toilsome
journey.
Let those having friends missing
send to “Jeff Davis Hospital,” Ma
rion county, Ohio, and sec whether
I he lost may not be found.

A good woman searching out the
t liildicu of want, ouo cold day last
winter, tried to open the door in
third story of a wretched house,
when she heard a little voice say:
“Pull the string up high! Pull
the string up higli!”
She looked up and saw a string,
which on being pulled, lifted
latch, suid she opened the door on
two little half-naked children, all
alone. Very cold and pitifnl they
looked.
“Do you take care of yourselves,
little ones,” asked the good woman.
“No, ma’am,” said the oldest,
“God takes cure of its.”
How beautiful and full of faith
was the reply.

candidate for the Presidency should
be elected nest fall. The President
intimated that he was couviuced,
the event of the election of a Dem

of the present House would next
