affair, though how, or iu what ma
this is to be effected, be could not say,

The 430 democratic applicants fer

fact all tbe while.

That this important line of road
would be bniltpwe have never doubt
ed. It has always been simply a
question of time. And unless tbe
signs of the times are very deceptive,
that time has come. It will be re
membered that in last week’s Times
tbe statement was made that engi
neers would at an early day be on
the Hue with a view to the location
of tho road. Ou Wednesday they
reached hero having made a pre
liminary survey of the route, and
which vfo are informed bv the en
gineer iu charge, Mr. Charles F.
Smith, to be highly satisfactory.—
The line os located leaves .1/iccosukie
lake to the left, and comes up on
the east side of Ward’s creek, pass
ing between Old Glasgow and that
stream. Thence by an easy grade
to Olive creek, which it crosses some
three miles from town. The sur
vey locates the line not far from
Linton’s mill, from which point the
corporation is reached, stopping
within about 800 yard of the A. A G.
Railroad depot. From tho engin
eer wo learn that the line is 21 j miles
long, and shows a remarkably easy
grade? Forty, or forty-five feet to
the mile, being the heaviest. There
is little or no bridging to be done;
and only at Olivo creek will it be nec
essary to do any trrcstling; and
probably not there. There ure no
heavy cuts or embankments. Upon
the whole Mr. Smith will make a
most favorable report to the com
pany who will take early action in
the premises.
We gleaned the following facts
from Col. Rater, one of the incor-
I Monitors, whom we found to be
thoroughly posted in railroad mat
ters, a gentleman who evidently
knows what he is about, and withal,
a very pleasaut gentleman. The
Company is organized under the
gene ral ini provement laws of Florida,
with Mr. Louis Bncki, (former part
ner of Gov. Drew) Col. 1%. W. Ra
ter and Charles Spooner, as incor
porators. Tho first named gentle
men, Mr. Ducki, being President.^
7 hose gentlemen have assurances of
the aid necessary to pnt th j road
through, so soon as the necessary
survey and arrangements can l>e
made. The lino will probably be
merged into the Florida system of
railways, giving an unbroken route
under one management to Jackson
ville, ialmost air line) the St Johns
river, Tallahassee and a largo por
tion of East and Middle Florida.—
7his would give as an outlet at
Jacksonville and Femuudina; the
latter a fine shipping port North
and East, and would in short give
us the advantage of choosing be
tween two routes. Jud this, above
all else, is what Thomnsville most
needs. And with nothing less tlmu
this, should she l»e satisfied. Nor
will she be. The company will take
definite action in tho next thirty
days. In the meautime Col. Rater
will return here in a few days in the
interest of the road. Whatever aid
and support can be given him by
our citizens, shonld be cheerfully
rendered. We believe that Tliom-
asville and Thomas county is able to
build this rood; and wc farther be
lieve that they will do it—if neces
sary—though they have no objec
tions, if the proper gnaruutees are
given, nud safe restrictions thrown
around tin- commercial interests of
the place, to allowing others to use
her franchises. Rat one thing should
l»e well guarded, aud* that is, when
the road is built, that it insnro to ns
permauent competition in the
way of freights, travel, Ac. We do
not wish to see any other corpora
tion injured or crippled, but we want
to see Tliomasville, like Albany,

We ventured to remark in this
Department, last year aud we now
repeat that, if we were a farmer,
wc should plant corn, potatoes,
ground peas and cane, snfficient to
iusnre an abundant provision crop
and to fatten all the liOgs we conld
raise or otherwise obtain and, then
plant every acre we conld tend in

simply that we would endeavor to
make arrangements, in pitching

newspaper talk about “all com and

The last time we saw John Rod-

third swarm of bees from one hive,

We enjoyed a peep at a love let
ter tho other day that concluded
with tho following touching and
granite melting lines:
‘Sweet to ocat* but o how biter,

It may be imaigned that a log
chain could not have kept the “garl”
from “going for” the smitten swain
after the reception of that touching
ode.
We enjoyed a fine season of , rain
for gardens and grain crops, last
Tuesday night; just a gentle effu
sion from the clouds that continued
all night long and nob a nourishing
drop of which failed to sink direct
ly into the ground and into the open
mouths of some root tpongioUs wait
ing to receive it. In two days more
there will appear very little, if any
difference between early and late
planted gardens.
