The officer*, irom Captain down to

the ComjtanY know what they are
about; that they want their ablest and

congratulate the company on their

them a still brighter era of prosperity

The publication of the humorous com

by IU length, and the press of other
matter. We arc always glad to re

writers too often fall into the vciy
common error of spreading out too
much. It is always a sate plan to
strike out every other line.

Uaiop Provision*.
Iu the discussion of this subject, we
have tried to show the ovefthadowing
and vitaliiuportanrcol making Thom
as count}*, self supporting. This, to
i, appears to be so plain au axiom,as
that every farmer, every raenhant
every professional man, every prop
erty holder in the county could see it.
Sell support is the basis of all prosper
ity. is the cornerstone of success. I Pc
make no war on cotton and oilh r
crops not in tho line of provision*,
where they do not conflict w ith the
laltcf. But where they do, wc warn
fanners against them. First be sure
that you make plenty of provision to
do you.aud then make us much cotton
as you please. But be sure that the
first is secured bcyoti 1 peradventure.
If the farmers of ibis county will pur
sue this course; pursue it with a deter
mination to become independent of
western com cribs and smoke houses,
they will soon be the most indepen
dent aud prosperous class in the Male.
Provisions first andcolion afterwards.
Let that be your motto.
On to Monlicello.
Just keep dark about that road to
Monticello. It is bound to be built.
It is iu fact, a ground hog ense with
Thomasvdle; wc are obliged to have
it. Aud have it wc will. If some*
body else don't build if, why we'll do
it ourselves. There will be cuough
unemployed muscle about town this
summer, which it utilized,would grade
it to Olive creek. Clean ofT the street
corners, organize the “can’t get
the (falter*, loafers and other
clubs, and if necessary let’s ull go to
shoveling dirt. Let’s appoint a cou-

Business.
None will read the fresh and s] ark-
ling advertisement of Messrs. Waxel-
baum & Bro., Mitchell Douse block,
without being impressed with the fact
that they mean busiuess. Messrs-
Popper and Strauss, the former long
nud favorably known to the public
here, nud tlic latter fast wining his way
to public confidence, aro pushing, eu-
crgelic aud reliable young men. They
appreciate the importance of being po
lite nud accommodating, they know
that to sell goods lljey must be sold
cheap; and last though not least, they
know tho value of advertising liberal
ly. Combining all these together, no
wonder that the New Fork store is
failed by so many buyers.
Sec their advertisement. They
mean ‘ business.”
Mr. D. T. Forest lias sent us, uot
one or two, but a good sized basket full
of new Irisli potatoes. They are of tho
Early Hose variety, very large and fine,
and aro ahead of anything which wc
have seen or heard of this season.—
Wc turned them over to Mr. Fabyan
of the Mitchell House, who exhibited
them to his guests as an evidence of
what this soil and climate can do this
early in the season.
Wc do not know what become of
them, but from the placid expression
on Jo Fans’ countenance as he mean,
dered out of the dining room Wednes
day, wc arc inclined to think that he
could tell something about where they
went.

•*Ten Nights in a Bor Room” was to
bj acted and a supper given for the
purpse of paying off a debt against
the Methodist church at that place.
Arriving before sundown, we found
a large and respectable crowd al
ready -assembled. Of course the
first thing which attracted our at
tention was the tempting and sump
tuous display of the many good
things under which the temporary
tables in the church fairly groaned.
The crowd steadily increased until
after dark,by which time there must
have been not less than three hun
dred persons ou the ground.
The large arbor had been enclosed
and fitted up for the performance
which commenced about 8 o’clock.
Through the kindness of a friend we
were furnished the names of those
who took part iu rendering this
thrilling drama, but it has unfortu
nately been mislaid, else we would
l>e pleased t » give the names of the
excellent amateur troupe. Onr
townsman Judge Hopkins, in a few
appropriate remarks announced the
object for which the cutcrtuiuincut
was given. The piece, under the cir
cumstances was well rendered, giv
ing entire satisfaction, so far ns we
could learu, to the large and appre
ciative audience who listened
throughout with the closest atten
tion.
Tlie Misses Hannah played well
their parts, as in fact most of the
jK-rforuicrs. Mr. Wheeler brought
down the house several times with
his linppy hits, aud inimitable way
of getting them off. But we cannot
particularize where all did so well.
An after piece, in which Profes
sor Player, and another gentle
man—we did not learu his name
—took part—created a good deal
of amusement. The uuknown gen
tleman’s songs were of the side
splitting order, and created no
little amusement Some ot the
Professor’s feats of legerdemain
were very good, as was also his ef
forts at ventriloquism.
At the conclusion of the perfor
mance nianv betook themselves to
the supper room where they found,
cuongli, olid more than enough, to
satisfy all.
The friends of the enterprise will
be pleased to learn that over one
hundred dollars was realized.
We caunot close this hasty aud
imperfect notice without acknowl
edging the many courtesies received
on tho occasion. We shall long
cherish the pleasant memories
which now cluster about Spring
HiU, and her hospitable people.
A tegular old fashioned Firemen's
Picnic is spoken of out on the river at
an early day. It is understood that the
Ncps ami Rescues will join on the oc
casion. Of course they’ll have a good
time. And it any class deserve a
good time occasionally, it is firemen.—
They arc always ready to help others.
Go in boys and forget dull care and
tlie fiery clement lor one day at least.
What is the Thomas County Immi
gration Society doing? It is aa im
portant factor just at this lime in
pushing the interests of this section,
and wc hope that they will look well
to the trust. Immigration is what we
want. Ollier sections of the South
arc reaping golden harvests from this
source; sections too which have far
less attractions than Thomas county
and South Georgia. There arc tbous
ands of acres of unoccupied lands in
this county which should be mode to
yield a support to mau.
Dr J. P. Duncan, the blind Chap-
laiu of the Georgia Scuatc, preached
to a large congregation at the Metho

his text and the hymns.
Nigblwalchman Lighlioot, cncouti
tered a two foot Moccasin snake the
other night crawling across the side
walk between Davies and Pyles’ Drug
Store, and McGlashan’s. Lest some
of the boys should think it necessary
to take some “snaik” medicine on
tho strength of the report, we will
state that his snakesbip was kill
ed on the spot.
Another Storm.
It scans that this is going to be a
year of storms. On Sunday morning
last another one of those unwelcome
and by far too frequent visitors swept
across the county. The storm King
devided his forces on the Ocklockoncc,
the north-eastern wing passinj
the Col.Young old homestead. !
iug aloug in its resistless tury it hurled
trees, fences, «&c., about like feathers,
taking in its course the places of
Mrs. Lavinia Jones, Dr. McTyrc and
Dixon Carroll. The Southern wing
played havoc, more or less, with the
following plantations: Mr. Craigmilcs'
Dr. Bower's, Col. Wright’s, M. M
Futch’s, John Cochran’s and Messrs.
Joshua and Caleb Carroll's. Wc
learn from Squire Hagan tlml about
the same hour on Sunday morning
the house of Mr. l’carcc Clay, living
six miles north of Cairo, was blown
down. His wife was engaged in cook
ing breakfast in the kitchen nt the
lime. The first place she found her
self was in the garden, distant 23 or
30 yards. Miss Hester, a visitor, was
crushed by the falling timbers in the
house, and held until rescued some
half hour afterwards by having the
logs prized up. A heavy chair
upon which she was sUlitv
broke the force of the fall, aud
thus no doubt saved her life. Even
the corn was blown thrown the cracks
of the crib. At last accounts
unfortunate gentleman had not been
able to find any oi bis fences. They
are probably landed somewhere up in
Colquitt.^

We are expecting every week to
see Triplett, of tho Times, bring a new
issue into the Omstitational Conven
tion question, by proposing to cany
the Capital to TbocnasvUle. It has a
big hotel, a two-story college budding,
a city ball, six'or seven bar rooms,
and cake shops and peanut stands
without end, and why not the Geor-
la Legislature meet there?- Quitman
'nt Press,
lx:t not your heart bo troubled. We
never put ia impracticable claims lor
Thomasvillc. Milledgevllle ought to
he, and we hope will be, the future
Capital of Georgia. If it was to be lo
cated iu this section however, wc
should certainly put our growing town
Iu nomination. Yoo are right, we
have “a big hotel,” and by way of
parenthesis it is ouc of the most ele-
£ antly furnished and fitted up hotels
in the State. Although in its first
season, its patronage will compare
with many old and long established
houses. In speaking of a two story
College building yon might have added
that Fletcher Institute located here, is,
under the able management of Prof’s.
$cott aud Mc&wain, fast winning its
way to the front rank ’rnong the best
male schools iu the Slate. After
cnuiueialing the cake shops,bar rooms
and pea not stands, all of which we
have it fa (rue,'you might have added
that wc have fifty or sixty merchants
here who do a pushing, thriving trade.
Some of them doing a business which
approximate a quarter of a million
dollars anouall}*. And theu you might
have added that out of the Urge num
ber of northern people who have filled
lira Mitchell House anJ numerous
private boarding houses here this win
ter, several have been so well pleased
that they have bought property in and
around Thomasvillc, and will locate
permanently.
No, wc arc not ambitious to have
Georgia Legislature meet here;
but wc arc ambitious to see Thomas-
illc grow and prosper; and if spilling
ink will have any cflcct, we intend to
do our share toward it. South Georgia
large enough to contain Quitman
and Thomasvillc were they treble their
prcscut size. And wc. hope in the
next decode to see both of them dou
ble their present population. Just
keep cool; work up yourowo town;
take as much elbow room as you like,
but don’t fret about Tliumasville,
She will look out for herself.
Fine Stock.
It is always an agreeable task to no
tice anything which betokens an im
provement in stock. It is a subject
which lias been too long neglected.—
We Have often urged upon the farm
eis of Thomas county the importance
of paying more attention to this sub
ject. In tbis respect they have been
set an examplo by Mr. T. R. Bennett,
one oi the most successful farmers,
progressive and public spirited gen
tlemen in Mitchell county. Mr. Ben
nett passed through here on Monday
ith a splendid lot of Alderney and
other improved breeds of cattle. They
were purchased from Messrs. Bloxham
and Bradford in Florida. Mr. Ben
nett has touched the right cord, has
made a move in the right direction
move which we hope other farmers
in Mitchell and Thomas may follow.

Mr. Editor: Wc arc so often ask
ed what has become of the Memorial
Association, that I have thought it
best to give the public, through your
valuable paper, a statement of our
condition, past work and prescut pro?
pects. As you arc aware,Hie Associa
tion was organized in April, 1874, for
tbc purpose of caring for the neglect
ed graves of our noble dead—and fi
nally to erect a suitable monument,
which should be dedicated to the
memory of the soldiers of Thomas
county, who died during the war. To
that end wc proposed to raise twelve
hundred dollars. JFc have succeeded
in raising seven hundred and sixty
dollars—which amount’is now at in
terest; and wc hope in a few more ef
forts to raise the balance. Our num
bers ore few, very few—and the work
has been arduous and at times scvsre,
bat we arc all loyal aud not in the
least discouraged. Every cause has
its opponents and ours has been no.
exception to the rnle, vet wc hove hod
many friends and well wishers from
all classes—and even from abroad
note of chee r is occasionally wafted,
and a helping hanjj extended to us.—
Thus we feel encouraged in the hope
that our feeble efforts to hold in last
ing and grateful remembrance onr
