Somewhere, 1 know.

With helpless hands at rest,
Folded upon my breast,

Mural Character.
There is nothing which adds so
much to tho beauty and power of
mnu, as a good moral character.—
It is his wealth—his influence—his
life. It dignifies him in every sta
tion, exalts him in every condition,
and glorifies him at every period of
life. Such a character is moro to
bo desired than everything else on
cartb. It makes a man free and in
dependent. No servile tool-croak-
ing sycophant—no treacherous
honor-seeker ever bore such a char
acter. The pure joys of truth and
righteousness never Npnng in such
a person. If youug men hut knew
how much a good character would
dignify and exalt them, how glori
ous it would mnko their prospects,
even in this life, never should we
find them yielding to the grovelliug
and base-born purposes of human
nature.

Haye’s Postmaster-General, who
was a Democrat until he became a
member of the Fraudulent Cabiuct
now gives Sanntor Meniuion of
North Carolina to understand that
his Department will be ruu asapnrt
of the Republican machine. He
says that in making appointments in
the .Southern States preference will
lx! given to Republicans, other things
being equal. Of course it will: and
the Postmaster-General for the
Southern .States merely gives notice
that seekers after Southern post of
fices will increase their chances of
success by openly joining tho Re
publican baud. The Fraudulent
/Idmistration ought nt least to be
able buy one vote with every post
office at its disposal if it manages
discreetly.—X. Y. Sun.
A Judge in Nevada lias been
using blue glass, and tells a reporter
nil about it: It's my deliberate non-
jtidiciid opinion that bine glass is a
humbug. I’ve tried it two or three
weeks now, ami am able to discern
no perceptible effect When the
sun shines, that glass up there
makes a big blue spot in tbe centre
of the room, ami I make my wife
sit there two hours a day.
thought it would curb licr desire
for luxuries, fineries and worldly
things; but it worked the opposite.
After the first week she came in
011c day aud remarked: ‘My dear,
this blue glass ray is inspiring in
my mind and exulted tasto for the
beautiful. You can take back that
thirty d Jllar bonuct to the milliner*:
and get that sixty dollar one I was
looking at.' Looking at the matter
from a scientific stumlpoiut, I was
considerably astonished, aud am
anxious to know what colored glass
will counteract the effect of the
blue.”
A Fort Madison man went into
Ii:m cow stable tlic other day, and,
by mistake, mixed her up
nice musli in a box full of saw dust
instead of bran. The cow, merely
supposing the hard times had come,
aud tliev were all going to econo
mize meekly ate her supper, and
that man never discovered his mis
take until the next morning, when
he milked that cow, and sho let
down a half gallon of turpentine,
a quart of shoe pegs, and a bundle
of laths.
Henry A. Wise, as be was dyin
said to bis sou; “Take hold John,
of the biggest knots in life, nud try
to untie them; try to be worthy of
man's highest estate; have high, no

one test of auytbiug, and it is, is it
right ? If it isn't turn away from
it.” That’s the test we want in a
good many quarters: “If it ins’t
