It is gratifying to learn that the
County Commissioners arc going to
see (hat the roads all over the county
put in a first class order. This is
another move in the dircrliou
drawing additional trade to Thomas
villc. We have cudeavored to show
in the past, that the trade of a place
hinged, to a very great extent at least
on Us approaches, its roads, bridges.
&c. Our far seeing Commissioners
appreciate (his fact, and they are go
ing to do their part toward pultiug
every sectiou of the suvrouuding coun
try in easy and safe communication
with Thomnsvillc. Keep the boll in
motion.
Mr. James M. Smith, brother
our esteemed townsman, Mr. S. Al
exander tfmltb, is spending a short
timo here among his friends
and relatives. Mr. Smith
among the first who blazed the
way to dyflizatioa in this region.
His recollections of the early settle
ment of Tbomasrille are vivid and
highly Interesting. VTt hope to lay
some ol them before the readers
the Times.
Monday Kight
at the Library Rooms demonstrated
the wisdom of the plan adepted by the
library committee to have reading
some other interesting exerciser at
the monthly meetings. The rooms of
the Association presented a very bril
liant appearance. A perfect bevy of
Indies thronged them, adding their
happy smiles and bright faces to the
scene. It was a most bewitching
tableau. Standing at one end of the
hall, the flutter of turning leaves, the
soft hum of words and the low, silvery
laugh came floating along borne upon
the aroma of flowers which filled the
rooms. The readers selected for the
evening were Miss Mattie Seward,
3/iss Bessie Merrill,Mr.E.H.Smilh and
Mr. S.G. McLendon. The first named,
Miss Seward, was unavoidably absent,
much to the regret of the Committee
nd the members of the Association.
Mr. S. G. McLendon led off with that
master piece of Prentice's. “The close
of the year." Miss Bessie followed
with an extract from Saxe, (Orpheus
and Eurydice.) Mr. E. B. Smith clos
ing with an extract from Zfenry the
Eighth, (interview between Cardinal
H oolsey and Cromwell.) The reading
was good, eliciting hearty applause
from the appreciative audience. Miss
MerriU’s -rendition ol her piece was
particularly fine, as was in fact all the
pieces read.
This opens a ucw era, and a new
source of enjoyment and improvement,
and one which wc doubt not will popu
larize the monthly meetings and tbs
institution itsclt.
The Committee will proceed at once
to make selections of those who are to
read at the next meeting. Those who
failed to attend the last meeting miss

7he merchants of Thomasvillc have
superb stocks of goods this spring and
they arc selling at bottom prices.—
Competition is said to be the life, of
trade. If this be true, and we believe
it has never been successfully gain
saved, theu this ought to be a lively
place for trade. And this is one ad
vantage, aud a very strong one which
Tbomasville has over many other
places. She has a large number of
very heavy dealers who buy largely
Mid sell for short profits. A fanner
can come to Thomasvillc to-day, and
buy goods, supplies, <tv., as cheap as
they can be purchased in any town in
Georgia. Our merchants arc alive to
the importance of building up and in'
creasing the trade of the town. To
do this they know that everything
must be put down to bottom prices.—
And this they have done. All they
ask is a trial.

Are (be merchants of TbommsvUle

ing Fair which (beg iMflffWe do
not make the inquiry to jeilccl on that
wideawake and Influential class of
citizens, bat for tbe purpose of arous
ing them to a still deeper interest in
these exhibitions. That they have in
the past sdded much, very modi, to
the prosperity of both town and coun
ty, none can or will deny. And that
the merchants have derived a corres
ponding benefit than this increased
prosperity is a proposition
presume none will

and brighter era dawn; do they want
to see the agricultural interest of the
county put ujion a higher scale and
plane; do they want to see the citizens
of Thomas county become self-sup
porting, thereby enabling them to
indulge iu tbe luxuries of life, and
upon which they make iheir best
profit**? Do they want to sue all this?
Then let them nut their shouldeis to
the wheel, let them show that they in
common willi all classes arc deeply
and vitally interested in the matter.
The merchants of Atlanta, Macon and
other cities nppiecriafe the Value and

premiums aud by giving iu a variety
of ways a cordial co-opcration to these
organizations designed to illustrate
the capacities of the country, invite

sure that the public spirited merch
ants of Thomasvillc need but to be re
minded of the great influence which
they, as a class, exert or. these organi
zations, for them to decide that they
will give the South Georgia A. & M.
Association their hearty aud cordial
support.
A Repented Suggestion to the
Grangers—Will They Act 1
Wo think il would be a most enjoy
able feature nt the May Fair, if every
Grange in this and adjoining counties
would take action looking to a social
reunion of that honorable order the
2!lbofMay. Wc have invited the
representatives ot llic press ol Georgia
to be here—and they are coming. We
have asked them to assemble iu
Thomasvillc on live occasion of the
annual May Fair, that they might sec
what this sectiou of Georgia is capa
ble of producing. They have heard
much ofthe wonderful capacities of
South Georgia, of her progessive and
public spirited citizens, and of her
Fairs. Shall they bo disappointed ?
It rests with the citizens of this and
suirounding counties to answer.—
High as their expectations arc, they
ueed not be disappointed if the Gran
gers and everybody else will but do
their duty. Let every Grange meet
at the earliest practicable day and re
solve that they will attend tlic May
Fair, so far as practicable, and that
they will biing the first fruits of their
land, and show to the assembled thou
sands that their order is engaged,
earnestly engaged, in bringing the
country back to an era o! plenty; and
that they feci aud appracintc the im
portance of sustaining an institution
designed to display their pioducts,
nd to build up the country. II any
body of citizens should feel a greater
interest in these Fairs than another,
surely it is Grangers. Then Gaugers
to the front.
We took occasion to embody these
suggestions a few weeks since in the
Times, but have not seen that any ac
tion has been taken. We renew them
with the hope that this class of our
citizens may see the importance of
combined action, and act promptly
the matter.

Brown’s Patent Picture Hook
is tbe latest, and most useful raven-
tion we have seen. They are capable
of securely holding up a lOOlbs, at the
same time being highly ornamental,
and very easy to place ina wall. They
can be driven in a plastered
without even cracking tbe plaster. In
fact they are just the thing. Call on
Mr. B. F. Fudge who has them for
sale at 10 cents a piece.
It would be a most excellent joke on
tho planters of this section if a gener
al European war was to break* out
(and it is not improbable) patting al
kind of breadstuff's, provisions, Ac.,
away np yonder, and send cotton down
below zero. Wc say that It would be
a good joke, if such was tbe case, and
they flod themselves the first of next
year negotiating with the West tor
corn atl.o0, bacon 2o cents, and every
thing else in proportion whilst cling-
ing with desperation to their cotton
for which they were being offered 0
or 7 cents. It would be very, laugha
ble. Just try it though and see which
side ot your mouth you’d laugh on. If
we arc not very much mistaken, it
would be a mighty sickly laugh sup
plemented with a lowered underjaw.
Bat try it gcullcmen. Nothing like a

Florida. At this fine hotel, we revel
in all tbe good things of life, and sleep
most comfortably after a walk in the
pine greves or a drive out to the beau
tiful plantations in tbe vicinity. The
habits «nd peculiar natures of the
coloyd gHostlc on these plantations
«re a perpetual sbnrce of amusement
and interest to Northern visitors.—
Their buoyant joys, sans tone* temper
ament might well teach us a lesson in
bearing tbe ills ol life, and their poetic
fancy is often shown in tbe pretty
names the) bear, which arc sometimes
slightly incongruous as to appearance
and character. One little darkey, for
iostancc, black 4# the ace of spaded,
rejoices in tbe brf4t appellation of
“Pearl Corinncand “Minerva” was
the name of our foolish old cook. —
“Ilannibal" was the greatest coward
in the neighborhood, while “Rose,” by
any other name would smell as sweet.”
Dullness or enaui might be feared
at a place which is ostensibly a health
re^o&Ife! there la too moeh vitality
and intelligence in- Tbomasville for
this to occur. I will describe the en
joyments of one day, when we all ad
journed to the piazza of the hotel to
witness a wheelbarrow race, to us a
most novel performance, laughing
with and at the little darkies, as they
wildly aud blindly rushed at every
poiul except ihc desired one. Then
we visited the “Fair,” where the pret
ty Georgia girls, in their little Swiss
caps and aprons, were full as attrac
tive as the many articles of taste and
beauty .ou their tables, and the display
of flowers was superb.
Florida should no more be called
the “Land of Flowers" than should
her sister State Georgia. Indeed, dur
ing a whole Florida season 1 never
snw such magnificent blooms, such
splendid varieties of roses, lilies, and
fragrant blossom, as are here culled
from Ihc gardens of Tbomasville.—
Then, when the intellectual taste asks
for indulgence, there is here a fine
public library tilled with choice books
auid all tho papers of the day.

We are pleased to learn that Mr.
John Static and Mr. Henry Sanford
have procured a lot of silk worms nod
will try the experiment of successful
silk culture in Thomas. It can hard
ly be termed an experiment either, for
silk culure in days gone by has been
successfully carried on by a number
of families m Thomas county. Among
them wc may mention Judge James
T. Hayes, Mrs. Mitchell and others.
We gladly chronicle this new feature
iu the varied industries which nre
opening up io this county. Variety,
and a greater number of pay
ing industries arc what the peo
ple ucod. The}* have too long
bccu confined to cotton and a very
few oilier products from which reve
nue could be derived. As is often the
case, these productions fail, or arc so
low, that they are not profitable.—
Hence the wisdom, nay the necessity,
of greater diversity, so that all the
eggs shall not be in one basket May
success attend the gentlemen who
have thus inaugurated and added a
ucw source of reveune to this county.
May many others be induced to follow
their example.
