Quite an excitement occurred last
Sunday night about 7 p. m by the
rapid ringing of the fire bell The
alarm was caused by the buiuing out
of a chimney to the kitchen of Mrs.
James Blackslicar. Tho Fire De

There is not a garden in or arouud

tribute something to the Fair. -
All the talk among the littlo fo.ks
now is about the May Picnic next

time generally. May their brightest
dreams about the affair be fully
alized.

Library Auoclailea. -
That 'bfs institution it doiog good
work and giving its members
a first class line of current literature
will appear from the SdlowUigfat of
publications to he found on the tablet:

ton’s Journal, Eclectic Magazine,
Scribner’s Magazine, Godcy’a Maga

Thomasvillo Times.
In addition to these the Association
has some sixteen hundred volumes
of choice standard works. The rooms
are elegantly fitted up, aud eveiy con
venience possible provided for the
members aud visitors. Verily it is
institution of which llie town may be
proud.
This institution appeals to all alike
for support. It is a pleasant and prof
itable place for the youog or old to
spend an hour. For the yoang espe
cially dots it offer inducements. An
hour spent there of an evening *bv a
young ras'j iu culling over the rich
gems of thought which glitter on every
hand, is much more profitable, much
more ennoblingjmd much more genteel
than loafing about on the street com
ers or about bar or billiard rooms. It
is io fact a great moral teacher aud
power and should tcceive the worm
snd cordial support of every friend Io
society, literary advancement, and
good morals in the town.
In this connection it strikes us that
there arc, if they could lie got at, a
large number of unused hooks in dif
ferent families in the town which
could be easily spared. If all such
could lie concentrated iu the Library,
rcrybody would havo ihc use Of
them, and the numlxr of volumes
easily swelled to 2,000, or 2/300 vol
umes. Who will be the first to look over
their books, and see wliat they can
spare? Give one, two, three, half
dozen, or as many more as you like.
We cannot close without appealing
to the many who have not as yet join
ed the Association, to become mem
bers. The cost is but little, $1 per
quarter for gcntlciuca and 30 ceuts
for ladies. Now this is very little,
and will never be missed when {mid
regularly. Beside you get the full
worth of your money, and m«re too.
You not only have the run of the Li
brary, but you get the daily use of papers,
periodicals, magazines, &c., for which
if you lin-J to pay would cost ycu $40
or $30. All this you get for $4 a year.
The Association ought to show a mem
bership of 300 at least, and we hope it
will at no distant day.
Hog and Hominy.
While wc notice that car load alter
car load of corn, has becu shipped this
spring to other places, It is gratifying
to know that not a single bushel of
western corn, or from anywhere else,
has fouud its way iulo old Thomas.—
Corn was selling on the streets last
Saturday at 40 cents.* The natural se
quence of this state of things is that
plenty of hogs will be raised and fat
tened. Wherever you find plenty of
corn, you will find plenty of meat. The
reverse of the proposition is true,
i. c. wherever they have to buy corn
they have also to buy meat. This
latter course will impoverish and keep
poor aoy people on earth.
Moral: Make a surplus of corn, and
you're sure to make plenty of meat to
do you.

Tis said that a “little learning is a
dangerous thing.” Boston Stephens,
a son of Afric’s sunny clime now lan
guishing iu the 2/olel do Faison, can
doubtless appreciate the aphorism.—
Boston, iu order to store his mind
with useful knowledge, and which was
highly commendable, learned to write
a very legible hand. But his educa
tion did not learn or lead him to be
honest lo fact he seems to have
prostituted the advantages of the late
“buro” to the covering of his devious
tracks whilst plying his vocation. Ho
concluded that Mr. James Pilcher,
living near Ochlockonee Station, had
more than his pro rata amount of this
world's goods, and by a parity of reas
oning that he, Stephens, was short
about $30 on the general account So
he broke into Mr. P’s bouse and ap
propriated to himself that amount.—
Thinking that under Jbc circum
stances, as Mr. P— and family hap
pened to lie from home, and would
probably likely lo know who had
been there, he penned a very polite
note to the absent gentleman inform
ing bim of bis action, saying: “I uo

A number of young people took ad*
vantage of the bright moonlight on
B’ednsday night tnd gathered at the
Fair grounds where a couple cf hours
were whiled away in dancing aod
promenading. It was a “lovely
night.” Youth and beauty, discarding
care and Jorgctiing the (light of time,
abandoned themselves for the nonce
to pleasure. Neath the soft silvery
rays of tho fair fickle goddess of night,
happy couples wandered about, or
wcut whirling away In the maxes of
the dance.

mounds, and bedewing them with wo
man’s tears. The Ladies Memorial
Association carried out the pro
gramme which appeared in tbeee col

etores were all closed. Tho Guards in

dress was listened to throughout with
the closest attention and abouuded in
the loftiest sentiments, ami most glow
ing tributes to the heroes of the “Lost
Cause ” After flie address, the la
dies proceeded to decorate the graves.
A pleasing feature and incident ol
this part of the programme was a
northern lady joining in the sad rites
and tenderly placing some choice flow
ers, gathered by her own fair bauds,
ou the graves of the Southern dead.—
These things go far toward healing
tbe past, and bringiog the sections
closer together. Surely if there is auy
place where the North and South can
meet without bitterness, it is arbuml
the places where reel their dead.
Spring Terns Snpcrlor Court.
Judge Hanscll adjourned the term
on Friday evening after having pretty
well cleared up the docket. Tho fol
lowing work on tho criminal docket
was done: Charles William*, charged
with burglary pleaded guilt}*,
was sentenced to the penitentiary for
the term of 3 years: Reuben Johnson
charged by the state with the same of
fence, acknowledged the corn aud was
sent up by hisHonor for the same time:
Marlin Randall, assault aud battery
—$13 or G months on the chain gang,
Crawford Smith charged with stolen
goods was acquitted. These gentle
men are all of the colored variety.—
Go the civil docket quite a large
amount of business was disposed ot in
cluding two old chronic cases which
have becu ou the docket for years;
Gee against Pearce, aud ihc Hall
claim cases.
It speaks well for the law abiding
character of the citizens of Thomas
county with her large population,
that the civil and criminal business
for tbe county is easily disposed of at
two terms during the year, occupying
but one week each.* This however is
partly the result of the admirable
working of our County Court, which
relieves the Superior Court of much
petty litigation winch in its absence
would necessarily come before the
higher court for adjudication.
The % f»l itclicit House.

ing houses in full blast, there will be
ample accommodation for all. Thom-
