That was not a large, bat a represen
tative meeting at the Ci'j Hall Friday
night, to consi-lt r the question of reviv
ing the old fairs, which in yean gc ae,
shed such lustre on this county and
section. On motion, Mayor Hopkins
was called to the chair, and Mr. Ben
McLendon was requested to act as sec
retary. Judge Hopkihs explained the
object of the meeting, and announced
it ready for business. A general dis
cussion ensued, participated in by
Meisr.*. McLendon, Mailettc, Hop

The general sentiment was ia favor o!
the enterprise.
The following resolution, offered by
Mr. McL?ndon, and amended by Mr.
Levy, was adopted :
“Resolved, That we hold an Expo
sition at Thomasville some time daring
the year 1889, to be known as the
South Georgia and Florida Exposition,
provided that the sum of ten thousand
dollars in ca-h subscriptions be Cm
secured.”
Dr. Hopkins thought the amount
ought to be 81.1,000, but tho meeting
evidently thought 810,000 a pood
starter.
The I.-cat’oc, time, etc., was inform
ally dbeussed, but as these questions
not relevant, just now, they were

i)r. T. S. Hopkins returned on
Saturday night from the annual meet
ing of the Trustees of the Georgia
Lunatic Asylum. Reports were
made out and the annual election of
officers took place.
Dr. T. O. Powell was elected
Superintendent, First Assistant Phy
sician, Dr. J. M. Whittaker, Second,
Dr. I. H. Hall, 3rd, Dr. Jones, 4th,
I)r. O’Dannie]; Mr. Fleming Grieve,
Secretary, Mrs. J. M. Darnell, Mat-
tron, and Pope West, Apothecary
These wereall re-elected. Col. R. C.
Humber was elected Steward and
Lucius Lamar, Treasurer.
Dr. Powell has been in charge of
the institution over twenty years, and
has given entire satislaction
Powell is the first Superinterdent of
an asylum in the United States, to
abolish treatment by restraint and to
substitute leniency. No more com
petent or reliable men can be found
in the State than Col. Humber and
Mr. Lamar, to fill the positions to
which they have been elected. The
general condition of the asylum and
patients are good, and the manage
ment entirely satisfaction. Insanity
is on the increase in the state, the
number of patients increasing every
year. 'There are now in the
asylum over fourteen hundred
patients, four hundred of whom
colored. The construction of
the new dummy line to the asylum,
which is approaching completion,
will save the state probably $1,500
per year in the matter of transporta
tion. 'J lie artesian well, which is
being bored, will furnish the long
needed supply of pure water for the
institution.
'i hc above is abbreviated from a
long and interesting talk with Dr.
Hopkins this morning, touching the
asylum, its workings, patients, etc.
The information will be interesting
to our readeis, especially those who
have friends or relatives there. We
may add, also, that Dr. Hopkins says
all the patients from this county are
quite well and getting on very nicely.
It is the candid opinion of Dr.
Hopkins, from the rapid increase of
insanity during the past year, that
another asylum will have to be estab
lished ere long for the exclusive use
of the colored patients, and the quar
ters now occupied by them appropri
ated to the use of the whites.
The Ntatc Fair.
Oar readers are, nc doubt, aware of
the fact that the- Georgia State Fair
will opeo in Macan on November 5th
and coctioue one week.
The fair authorities are miking
strenuous cxetlions to make the com
ing fair one of the mo*t successful in
the catalogue of state fairs, and have
every reason to congratulate themselves
on the success of their efforts, up to
the time of its postponement,
some weeks ago. The an
nouncement that the fair wculd not
be held, for prudential reasons, on ac
count c-f the prcvaletcj cf lever in
Florida, had a tendency to disarrange
the organizid plans of f-ome of the
counties, for a tiroe, but we are el ad to
see that the matter has b:cn taken up,
and several counties are making ar
rangements to contest fer the county
premium. This will, of ileelf, make
a good showing, and we arc confident
the fair will be a tuccers.
Thomt-s county ..Ivtays takes an in
terest in the State Fair, and, uo doubt,
will do so this year.
