The Prevalence of Lynch Fe-
tcf
We have more lynchings in the
United States than at any period ii
the history of the country. The de
moralization of civil war may have
something to do with it, but-it is
most probably because we have more
people . The lynching spirit remains
and asserts itself with the increase of
the population because effective pro
test is so seldom made against it*
The reader will have no difficulty in
remembering lynchings all over the
country. He will have great difficul
ty in recalling any effective protest
made against the habit besides the
one recently made by the faithful
sheriff at Birmingham, Ala. This pa
per has reported hundreds of columns
of lynchings in the last twenty years.
During that time it has never repor
ted the legal hanging of a single lynch
er for his crime. Sheriff Smith of
Birmingham held the just and lega'
view that to attempt lynching means
to attempt muider. When this view
is enforced as he enforced it, the truth
will come home and banish the spirit
of murder from the minds of those
who would not commit murder unless
urged on by the mob spirit and sus
tained by the mob presence.
Ah To Sunday Newspaper*.
Dr. DeCosta of New York, in a ser
mon preached last Sunday, ro-opened
the question of the publication of Sun
day newspapers and denounced them as
godless publications. The Herald no
ticed this sermon editorially, and in do
ing so, took occasion t£ remind the
good Doctor that by actual and reliable
religious statistics, not a quarter of the
population of New York attended or had
anything to do with chuches, near or re
mote. It might have gone farther
and suggested that of the 05,000,000
people comprising the population of the
United States less than 20,000,000
are claimed by the churches as mem
bers. To the 45,000,000, remain
ing the Sunday, as well as the week
day papers arc a great boon. Besides
this, the newspapers of the country give
a wide publicity to the sermons of the
ablest divines, and oven of such small
fry as Dr. DeCosta, and thus do more
for the gospel than they could possibly
hope to do single-handed and alone.
A breach of promise suit, which
promises to create a sensation and bring
out some rather interesting testimony,
has been brought in Lowell, Mass., by
Miss Catherine Teressa McEnery
against Mr. John H Buttrick. Miss
McEnery is bigly educated and moves
in .the best circles, while Mr. Buttrick
is wealthy and one of Lowell’s select 400.
As to age, neither ono is a spring chick-
on. Their courtship began 35 years
ago, when Miss McEnery, as a young
lady,*hadnumber3 of suitors. Mr. But-
trick was her choico, but there was
objection by her family to her marriage
to him, and the affair has been kept up
for the number of years stated. Re
cently, however, Mr. Buttrick seems to
have grown cold, or to become tired of
pressing a suit that seemed destined to
fail. At any rate he ceased to pay at
tentions to his old sweetheart and the
consequence is that he finds himself the
defendant in a $75,000 breach of prom
ise suit. Gen. B. F. Butler has been
engaged as Miss McEnery’s attorney.
There is a report that a genius in
Newport, Kcntuckey, is turning out
a ton of aluranium at a cost of forty-
' four dollars. If this prove true, it will
revolutionize all kinds of manufactur
ing in a very short time. Alumnium
is found almost everywhere, 4t is
more abundant than iron, lighter and
more indestructible than silver and
susceptible of a higer polish. The
only drawback to its universal appli
cation to thousands of uses has been
the cost of its extraction. As it is
now carried on, its cost is six dollars
a pound, or half the price of silver-
The size of the Kentucky man’s a-
chievement may be estimated from
the fact that he reduces the material
to about two cents a pound.
Marriage a la Mode: “Oh, papa,
Mr. Clearhead bas asked me to marry
him." “Indeed, my dear; and what
did you say?” “Well, of course, I
asked him to give me time. So he
said, in an abstracted sort of way, that
if I could give him good references T
could have tho usual thirty days, but
it was not his custom ” “My
dear, I think that this is a very busi
ness like young man. You had better
close dirsctly."

It is generally conceded
that high prices are asked for
this line of goods. I com

sell for the lowest amount

kept the resolution and . will
continue to do so. The rich

It is a fact, that my prices
