The ,-oa had in the meantime formed an illicit connection with a young German woman named Rcse Catana, the present plaintiff, a s- »rt of adventuress resembling Loin Montes for her habits and her energetic character. The war intervened, and while Connt Mieces las went to London, Gregoire remained in Paris, and during the siege took his mistress 1 to reside t*t the mansion, where she assumed the title of Countess. That step was highly disapproved by the father, who, on learning of it at the close of the siege, wrote a letter of reproach from London, and the young man excused himself by alleging the excep tional circumstances in which they had been placed by the investment. Gregoire and Rose Catana then went to live at a villa near S:. Cloud, where he was ODe day mortally injured by ibe explosion cf an unused shell, the capsule of which he was en deavoring to unscrew.
