His groans awakened hia wife and she hastened into the hall to see what was the matter. As she looked into the hall sho saw her husband standing almost en veloped in flames. She said: “Mr. Marks, you are on fire.” He replied: “Am I?*’ Mrs. Marks used every exertion to extinguish the flames, but before she succeeded his clothing was almost burned from his body, and hia whiskers, which were long, were all gone. He was badly burned on the face, breast and stomach, and it is thought that he inhaled some of the flime and was injured internally. Medical aid was called in, his wounds dressed and temporary relief afforded, but all proved unavailing and at half past three o’clock, Sat urday evening, he died. Savannah had only 19 interments lull month. The green fruit crop will help her up to a livelier record this month. A number of “leading citizens" of Ainericus have filed an injunction restraining the City Council from the collection of the school tax. Carpenter, formerly editor of the Elberton Gazette, has been made Postmaster at Gove’s Creek Post Office. We are pleased to see this rapid advancement up the Udder of fame. The Athens Watchman gives us the follow ing report of the Southern Mutual Insurance Company, oi Athens, an institution ot which Georgia should be proud. The meeting of the Directors, subsequently held, the follow ing gentlemen were re-elected officers for the ensuing year: Hon. Y. L. G. Harris President. Col. Stevens Thomas Secretary. Major John Crawford Book-Keeper. From the annual report, just published, it appears that this excellent company, under the rrndent and sagacious management for which it has been distinguished, is in a highly prosperous condition. In consideration of the prosperous business of the year ending May 1, 1873, a dividend of forty per cent, has been declared. The losses paid daring the past fiscal year amounted to $79,1)77.17. The receipts during the same period amounted to $244,101.24. Colonel Christy, iho venerable pilot of the Southern Watchman, is glaring u»o» hi,? spec tacles at a young alligator that was caught on dry land in Athens. The Colonel is frantical ly engaged in combatting “the overgrown lizard” theory, and insists that his is a regu lar alligator, which we hope he is. The boys of Savannah have oiganized a company called “the Junior Jasper Greens"— Joey Harris is a member of some prominence. Dr. Joseph A. Eve and wife and daughter, of Augusta, have sailed for an extensive tour in Europe. The Lawrenceville Herald reports a singu lar case, the synopsis of which we subjoin : Mr. Tyler Brand, who lives near Logans- ville, has a large nnwber of “bee stands” in his orchard, near his residence. One day last week his children were playing near the hives. It is supposed that they commenced lighting the bees, and the bees commenced stinging the children. They immediately ran off, leaving the youngest, a child abont two years old. The cries of the suffering child attracted the attention of its mother, who was at the house sick, she immediately run to its relief. By the time she got there the bees were thoronghly infuriated, and the whole swarm was pouring out of the gum, until nearly every bee had left it. She seized the child, and run to the house, the bees fol lowing, stinging her and the child. When she arrived at the honse, being very feeble, she fainted; and a neighbor lady, who hap pened to be on a visit there, fearing that the child would be stung to death, picked it up and started towards the woods. The bees seemed determined not to let the child escape, and followed her, stinging her so severely that she had to drop the child; when the bees covered it, continuing to sting. By this time, Mr. Brand, who was working in a field near by, heard the cries of the children, and came to their relief. He found the bees still hovering about the child; and, onr informant states, had to rub them ofi’ with his hands. He then took the child to the house, and went to work to relieve its intense suffering. He palled out a large number of the stings, and washed it with brandy. .It had been stung all over the face and head, and even in it si mouth and under its tongue. The Savage War in Cuba cannot be better illustrated than in the infamons and impo tent vengeance taken by the Spanish volun teers on the corpse of the patriot, AgTmmonte. The body, we are informed, was filled with peirolenm and burned. This is a deed worthy of the most barbarous days of the forefathers of the Spaniards on the African side. The ashes of the patriot are now kept for a trophy in the Casino Espanol of Puerto Principe. The ghoulish hidenonsness of this act is only too much in keeping with the Spanish char acter. Meanwhile the war goes on. By tele gram from Havana we baye-Jnformatioc, on the authority of Spmiwlr'officiai dispatches, that a jJPVe're battle has just been fought in tbp'Hanz&nillo region between the Cuban in surrectionist forces and the troops of the Madrid Republic. The losses were very heavy on both sides.
