This is the Fonrth of Jaly—the anniversary
of the Declaration of American
ence, and the day on which Vicksburg sur
rendered and on which Lee un* h .ifted at
Gettysburg. Let those who cuu, rejoice on
this anniversary of the day on which the #
dea'h knell of Southern Independence was
sounded. For our part, this “ Glorious
Fourth” is full of mournful recollections and
bitterest regrets; for we feel once more the
solemn stillness of the ramparts of Vicks
burg, behind which so many had fought and
starved for nearly fifty days—a stillness broken
only after the sun had set, and the stars
looked down upon the turgid waters ot the
Mississippi. It seemed then as if the wail of
the waters was for the young nation which
had that day received her fatal stab, and laid
weltering in her heart’s blood, dying.

her not to attempt to cross, on account of the near ap

his horse rapdly. Instead of heeding this well meant
advice, the black wretch faid to the girl: “Go to

wa y xhe gentleman seeing the danger to which
the child in the carriage was expoaed,
endeavored strenuously to slop the horae, but the
animal being high jointed, he waa unable to control
him immediately, and the front wheels of the buggy
struck the baby-carriage, throwing the little innocent
out and the hind wheel passed over its legs. The

scene to Ascertain the result of the casualty, and to
render any assistant* possible. It was believed that
the chilli leg hAd been broken, but fortunately,

The »cg*A girl reflated to state whose children they

on, taking the injured child with her. One of the
bystanders, however, declined to permit this, and
taking the poor little thing in hia arms ordered the
negro girl to conduct him to its home.

This day ninety-seven years ago a nation
to their j was born and a glorious impetus given to the

that let us rejoice. This day ten years ago
a nation was destroyed, and the South it was
that fell. To ns, then, the gloiies of 1776

1863. If we are to look back upon the past
for rejoicing, let us be sure that no terrible
calamity stands between us aod joy. What
interest has the South in this day as the anui-
York Sun, was formerly one of the most
prominent leaders cf the Republican party.
Under Mr. Lincoln’s administration he held
high office, and was regarded as one of the
moRt promising men of his party, until he
became disgusted with it and denounced its
corruption. Then, of course, Mr. Dana re
ceived the usual abuse from the press which
had before lauded biro; bat, undeterred by
abase and vituperation, he has persevered in
his self appointed task of exposing rascality
and wrong regardless of partisan considera
tion.
For doing this the Radical leaders and
party organs are doing their best to influence
a corrupt judiciary into punishing him. His
paper, the Sun, it was that exposed that mass
of corruption, the Credit Jfotrilirr; he next
exhibited the rascally Philadelphia ring, with
ita “addition, division and silence pro
gramme,” and he is now engaged in show
ing np the thieving Washington ring. For
this and many other bold and manly exposi
tions of wrong, Mr. Dana has been and is be
set by numerous suits for libel; and now the
Washington scoundrels are endeavoring to
drag him to tba^ city so that he may be tried
before a Ring Judge, by a packed jury.
These scoundrels will not venture to sue

versary of American independence ? Shall
we make merry over the libeily it gave, when
we do not enjoy that liberty ? Shall we fire
cannons in celebration of an independence
we do not possess ? Is it appropriate for us
to thank God that on this day ninety-seven
years ago, a people proclaimed their right to
be governed by themselves, when that right
is denied to us? What a melancholy feast
that must be which has the spectres of Vicks
burg and of Gettysburg seated at the head of
the table!
All this is sentiment, perhaps. So also is
that overflowing patriotism which climbs
over the mountain of disaster aud humilia
tion, and looking beyond a river ot blood
poiuts to a happy, distant past, which can
never come again; and asks us to renew asso

afid fifth. At last some question of snperionty in

tied without a resort to the ‘’manly art,” aud they
paired to the lower end of Brea i street, stripped for]
the fight and at it they went in regular croan road]
lashion. For about forty minutes they made things
lively, and the idle clerks and cotton buyers looked
oa with evident relish at the way “the old thing
worked." After wearing themselves out the forces
were withdrawn and two of the men started off towards
the depot. Just then policemen Stroud and Stew-
ki t put in an appearance and requested the pleasure of
tbolr oompany. This was indignantly refused, and to
make the d«c:enaion more impressive, one of them
struck out with a shoulder hitter which cime in con.
tact with Stroud’s face. The other then quietly picked
up a rock for the purpose of forcibly declining, when
Ptawatt, who waa holding his “ btllj ” at an easy ele

over the two eyes, from the effect of which be gently
took a seat, not wishing to continue his part of the
difficulty.

Tbs Telegraph and Messenger says of Mercer Uni
versity meeting: A meeting of the friends of Mercer
University was held in the First Bai-tist Church last
night, and was attended by a large number of ladies
and gentlemen.
Col. David E. Butler was In the chair. The chair
stated the object of the meeting in a most earnest
«r. It was one of the few col-
fore, they have invoked the power of the
Federal Government to have him transported
to another city, whero they can make indict
ment tantamount to conviction. We look
forward to the resalt of this effort with more
than ordinary interest. Mr. Dana, throogh
his counsel, has challenged the power ef the
Federal aathorities to take cognizance of
the alleged libel, and lias threatened to sue
Judges and District Attorneys for false im
prisonment. He is making a brave fight, and
we most heartily wish him success. The
legal proceedings against him are another
and a dangerous step towards completing the
work of centralizing all power in the hands
of the Federal Government—or, rather, we
may say in the hands of the President.
Mr. Dana is confident of success; but what
if Judge Bl&tchford decides Against him?
Will be resist the mandate of the Federal
court, even though it be a glaring usurpation
and an outrageous attack upon the liberty of
the citizen ? Nay, will he possess the power
to resist, even though he may have the inch-
nation? If he goes to Washington his con
viction is certain; and once at the Federal
Capital his case will make a precedent upon
when the substance has fled ? There may be
those as earnest, as honest aud as sincere as
we believe ourselves to be, who will; but they
represent only success; ours arc emblems ot
disaster.

KEEP COOL.
The fact that a fugitive lady from Nashville
coming here has developed cholera in her
case, is not the slightest cause for alarm
the part of our citizens. If our people will
avoid food calculated to cause looseness of the
bowels, and confine their diet to wholesome,
well cooked viands, they need not fear the
plague. Green corn, cabbage, green peas,
and kindred vegetables, are not to be recom
mended at a time when so terrible a disease as
cholera is in the vicinity*. If we are careful
in onr diet, and keep our houses and yards
thoroughly clean, we believe that tho cases of
cholera likely to appear in our midst will be
confined exclusively to strangers who con
tracted the disease at other points.
HkPORT
It seems to us that it would greatly conduce
to the benefit ol Atlanta, and to the allaying
of any apprehem i ms outside of the city, if
the Board of Health would furnish the press
with a weekly mortuary report, showing the
number of deaths and their causes. Not a
few persons beyond tbo city believo that
cholera exists here to a serious extent, and
this belief can be removed if the Board of
Health will only adopt onr suggestion.

from the Southern Declaration of Independ
ence, 1776 is but a half remembered story,
and 1863 is the real drama. Tims, no mat
ter how many cannon may be fired in the
South ; nor bow many orations delivered, the
phantom of a lost cause must confront us,
and .before we retire to rest to-night this
Fourth of July will weigh upon our hearts as
cold as the graves of Vicksburg and of Get
tysburg; whilst that anniversary wa thought
to make merry upon, will fade from our
minds like the uureal thing it is, leaving in
its stead only those sorrowful memories
which cluster aiound the broken sword, the
furled banner and the hecatomb of graves.

One of the moat curious strikes on record
has just occurred in 8t. Louis. On the edi
torial staff of the German newspaper, the
Amerika, is n gentleman named Regenaur;
whose handwriting is snid, M Jlteth wonde*.
For a long time the compontovs in the Amer
ica office puzzled their brains to the verge of
distraction in their efforts to decipher this
gentleman’s mannacript without complaint,
bat at last, driven to despenrtiom, they ap
pointed a committee to wait on the proprietor
of the journal, with the request that in fu
ture they should be paid a price and a half for
patting Mr. Regenaur’s copy in type. The
request was refused, whereupon the composi
tors struck in a body.

Duelling in Chicago is thus described by a
French newspaper: If ever a nation consid
ered duelling as a serious business, it is the
American nation. One day a Cincinnati mer
chant was challenged by a Chicago merchant.
The challenge was sent by telegraph, and
these telegrams were exchanged: Cincinnati
to Chicago—“Challenge accepted. Come to
Cincinnati to settle the conditions.” Chicago
to Cincinnati—“I shall do no such thing.
Why should I, and not you, take the trouble
to travel?” Cincinnati to Chicago—“Because
my wife is in childbed.” Chicago to Cincin
nati-—“All right. Expect me in the next
train.” The Chicago banker ionnd the Cin
cinnati merchant at the railway station, and
asked the latter: “Well, are you ready lor the
fight? Why in the deuce are yon so pale?”
Because I am a. mined man. My corro'pon-
denl at Havre has ceased making me his usu
al remittance.
By Jove that’s bad. I set out for Havre
to-morrow; we will fight when we retnrn. I
shan’t quit yon.” They embarked on the
same steamship. When they reach Havre
the Cincinnati merchant finds his corres
pondent has run off to Canton with all the
money he could raise- They go after him.
They find and arrest him at Canton, bring
him back to Havre, have him tried, convicted
and put him in tho penitentiary. This prose
cution lasts six months. After they have seen
the rogue put in the penitentiary, they return
to America. They had now been traveling
together for two years, and had come to love
each other like brothers. Isevert’ncless, the
day alter they reached Chicago, the banker
said: “By tho way, we have almost forgotten
our duel. We have got to fight.” “To be
sure we must.” The following day they
fought on the lake shore with rifles, the dis
tance was twenty paces. Both fell mortally
wounded, and their l$st breath expired say
ing “All right.”
