CAPTAIN JACK’S PERIL.
Trial of the Modoc Chiefs for Morder.
Fort Kai.amath, July 9, 1873.
The military commission met and proceeded with
the trial of Captain Jack, Schonschin, Boston Charlie,
Black Jim and others implicated in the Can by mas
sacre. The charges against them are for murder in
violation of the laws of war. The specifications repeat
the facts, which aro already known. The witnesses
have been examined—T. F. Riddle, his Indian woman
Toby, and L. D. Diar.
Toby swears positively that Captain Jack shot Gen.
Canby; Sconachin shot Mr. Meacham; Boston Charlie
shot Dr. Thomas, and that Hooker Jim tried to kil
L. D. Diar; also, that Branche knocked her down
with a gun, and tried to take her horse. The testi
mony of Riddle corroborates that of his wife.

The crisis in the Italian Ministry has terminated.

of Foreign Affairs; Viscount Vencsta, Minister of the
Interior; Cantelli, Minister of Justice and Ecclesiasti'
cal affairs; Viglian, Minister of War; Lieutenant-Gen
eral Recolti Neagmain, Minister of Marines; Segrus
Saint Boo, Minister of Public Works; LeParents,
Minister of Public Instruction; Scialogs, Minister of
Commerce and Agriculture.
VIRGINIA.
A Witness in the Mordecai Duel
Declines to Testify.
Richmond, July 10.
In the case of Dr. Cullen, one of the eurgeone in
the Mordecai duel, who refused to testify before the
grand jury on the ground that he might criminate
criminate himself. Judge Oengre to-day decided that
he must answer questions propounded by the grand
jury or be held for contempt. Tne counsel asked for
a suspension of sentence la order to appeal to the Su
preme Court, which was granted and the commitment
of the witness postponed till that time.
Notwithstanding the refusal of Dr. Calien to testify
on the dueling case, the grand jury, with the evidence
before them, found true bills of indictment against
four seconds for wilful and malicious murder of Mor
decai.

THE EPIDEMIC ABATING.

Chattanooga, July 10, 1873.
The total number of death# to-day was 8.
Of these six were colored and two white.
There were two deaths from cholera. No new
cases rejH>rted. The epidemic is considered
over, and people are retnrning. Toby.
A private- letter from Chattanooga has this
to say:
The cholera has at last entirely subsided
and our town is once more enjoying its usual
good health. The disease was pretty bad for
three or four weeks, but we believe at no time
so bad as represented by some exaggerated
reports we noticed circulating in some cf your
papers We hope your city will escape the
scourge entirely.”

Memphis, July 8, 1873.
In all there were thirteen interment* reported to
the Board of Health to day, of which three only were
from the sporadic. The disease is slating here quite
rapidly, and the number of deaths in the country
town* adjacent, as well as those above and below here
on the river and throughout Arkansas and North Mis
sissippi, are decreasing.

Eighteen cases of cholera are reported, whereof
fourteen were fatal.
Lautnbcrg had eight cases, of which number four
were fatal.

Venice, July 9, 1873.
The prevalence of cholera here has been officially
announced. Bulletins of the progress of the disease
will be issued daily by the sanitary officers
GENERAL REMARKS.
The truth is, the cholera has about passed
away from us. It has spent its fury
Nashville, Memphis and Chattanooga, and has
drifted northward, and scrota the ocean. Atlanta has
not had a single case, as yet, for which good lack her
people should be supremely thankful. During all of
the excitement the Herald has attempted to give the
news in as reliable and as condensed a manners* pos
sible-hiding nothing and nothing setting forth it
malice.

A Sev Association—The American Hebrew
Congregations.
Cincinnati, July 10, 1873.
The Hebrew conference to-day adopted a constito-
* 'w forming an association under the name of Tie
American Hebrew Congregations. The object of the
union is the establishment of a Hebrew Theological
roilege. All the Hebrew congregations in the United
States are invited to join the Union at the next meet
ing of the conference,which will be held on the second
Tuesday in July of next year.

A World’s special says the Chief Justiceship bae
been tendered to Boscoe Conklins, one of the United
States Senators from New York.
A LOST STEAMER.
A statement of a passenger on the lost steamer City
of. Washington, charges ihe loss of the steamer&s due
to criminal carelessness of the officers and crew, and
that they just barely escaped being engulfed,
says that lead was never hove over, and no one had an
idea where the ship was. We bad on board a captain
—a stranger who had crossed the ocean scores of
times. He frequently warned the chief officer that he
was running too far northward and advised him to
run down one hundred miles or so southward to get
sun and to see wheie they were. His advice was
rudely declined. The second officer, I believe, coin
cided in this view.
A CLAIM CAFE WON.
A. P. Nurse, counsel for claimants, telegraphs from
Newport regarding a test case says they have gained
the great Cummins cotton claim before the Brittiah
Commission here. The cotton was captured on Red
River and awarded at $20,000.
THE HARPER’S FERRY PROPERTY.
The Attorney General has written a letter in rela.
tion to the suiis now pending to enforce the vendor'i
lien In the Harper-Ferry property, in which he says
“It is not my intention to have the property offered
for sale under the ven or’a lien nntil all outstanding
claims against the property are adjusted, and particu
larly not until it has been judicially determined what.
if any, right or claim the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad
Company have any right to the property or any part
thereof.”
THE WEATHER.
On Friday, in the Western Quit States, uortherl
winds, partly cloudy and clear weather. For the
Eastern Gulf States, southwesterly winds, clearing to
northwest, with generally clear weather. $or the
8outh Atlantic States, southerly winds, veering to
southwest and possibly north west, with numerous
local rains. For the Middle Atlantic States, southwest
winds, cloudy and rain, followed by northwest winds
and clearing weather by Friday evening. For New
England, easterly winds, Directing and rainy weather.
For the Lower Lake region, northwesterly wind, lower
temperature and clear or clearing weather. For the
Upper Lakes and Northwest, northerly winds and
clear weather,
The evening telegraphic reports are missing from
the Pacific coast snd Rocky Mountains.
The Secretary of War has designated the commis
sioners to locate a military prison at Rock Island.
A dispatch received at Halifax from Port Lebear
states the wreck of the stammer City of Washington.
It broke In two at 7 o’clock this morning. The captain
and officers were on board at tho time, bat succeeded
in escaping from the wreck.
The United States steamer Worcester, flagship of the
North Atlantic Squadron, flying the flag of Rear Adml
ral Geo. H. Scott, arrived fit Fort Monroe at 1 p. m.
yesterday, in company with the Wyoming, and
anchored off the port. All cn board are well.
A SUICIDE.
A United States Naval Officer Shoot# Hina

Norfolk, July 10, 1873.
George Sand, a mate on doty on board tbe United
States receiving ship* New Hampshire, at the Navy
Yard, suicided to-day, shooting himself through the
head with a navy revolver. The suicide is believed
have been caused by disappointment in love. The de
ceased was twenty-three years of age, and a son
John R. Sand, Rear Admiral of the United States
Navy.
FOREIGN SPLINTERS.
Three thousand factory operatives struck for higher
wages and shorter hours in Alcoy.
The government suspended the publication of the
Trlbnno until the fine of $2,000 imposed by tbe
thoritiea be jaid.

one was shot through the breast and the other through
the band.
TURKEY.
THE ORANGEMEN.
Arrangements to Protect tbe Procession on
tbe 12th instant.
Nrw Yore, July 10, 1873.
The police authorities are busy making preparation
the disposition of forces daring the Orange pro
cession on the 12th July. Very little has been learned
to the doings of the Irish societies. While a large
number of tbe authorities do not anticipate any more
trouble on this 12th of July than on the same day last
year, there are many who do not believe that it
will pass off ao quietly, as there are
constantly urging the necessity of precaution requi
site to quell any distuibanco that may arise. While
the force may be ordered on duty at the Central office
9:30 a. m., 12th inst., detectives will be scattered
among the crowd, watching the procession, and it will
their duty to arrest any person attempting any
violence or inciting a riot, as well as all thieves found
along tbe route. There will be five hundred men to
guard the Orangemen and a reserve of three hun
dred at the Central office. The police authorities do
not intend to call on the military this time, as they
believe that their force la fally able to cope all the
turbulent spirit#
SPAIN.
Another Town Captured by Carlists.
Madrid, July 10,1863.
The Carlists have captured the town of Sal Guess,
the Province of Navarre, twenty-five miles south
east of Pamplona, and shot the tax collectors.
The Carlists have seized thirty-four residents of
Moras, and hold seven of them as hostages for the
safe leturn of the Insurgents now in the hands of
the Republicans; the remainidg twenty-seven aro held
ransom.
The deputy Mayor and Councilor of M alago has
been assassinated.
Norvilles’ Resignation Accepted.
Madrid, July 10,1873.
The resignation of General Norvilles, as commander
the army of the North was accepted *nd General
Cordova will be his successor.

Frederick Wiuterholter, the celebrated portrait pain,
ter died to-day of typhus fever.
An advertisement appears in the News this morn
ing, calling a meeting of all the persons who have
claims against the United States to appear before tbe
terminal date fixed in tbe treaty of Washington, for
the purpose of taking action for the advancement of
their interests.

gating the sum of $89,170, are each entitled
to $10, and will be so paid on presentation
and delivery of the tickets.
The payment of the gifts will begin Satur
day morning, July 12, at 9 o'clock. The
tickets must be presented at Boom No. 4,
Pnblie Library Building, where they will be
taken up and paid by cash checks npon the
Farmers’ and Drovers' Bank of Louisville, or
by sight drafts upon the Fourth National
Bank of New Y'ork, at the option of the hol
der. No gift will be paid without delivery of
the ticket entitled to it, and all gifts not called
for within six mouths from the drawing will
be turned over to the Public Library fund
and not afterwards paid. The tickets tor the
fourth Gift Concert—the greatest thing of the
kind ever presented to the world- aro now
ready for sale, and any one who prefers it,
can have tho value of a gilt, or any part of it,
in the new tickets.
