VOICES OF THE DAY.
Letters from the People to the Herald.
FROM ALL PARTS OF THE COUNTRY
•ABOUT UKCATIB.
AN ALL Farmer town—the patrons of hus
bandry—OVER THE COUNTRY—
A GOOD HOTEL.
Colaparchee, Ga., July 8th, 1873.
To the Editors of the Herald:
It was the pleasnre of the writer last week
to make a flying trip to the ancient town ol
Decatur. I like her citizens. Though a
place of notable dimensions, her denizens are
all fanners, solving practical agricnltnral ques
tions upon their farms. What a clever town it
onght and must be. You can live in town and
lC^j^MJljpSentleman too ! Glad to find that
>Jn-en absorbed by her Titanic
^Bighbo^yhad signs cf life
and thrift, evinced by several new and tasty
residences, Ac. Her people ar9 all right on
the grange qnestion, save that fossilized old
friend who thought another Know Nothing
hoax hid come to judgment When Alston
Grange—named in deserved compliment to
Col. R. A. Alston, of yonr staff—shall have
demonstrated by her wide-awake membership,
led off by those public-spirited and thorough
ly enthused brothers R. A. A. and E. C., j
what it knows about running a bank in the
interest of patrons, and secured the
elevation and independent prosperity, pecuni
arily, socially and morally, of her members, she
will speedily enre all such of their Quixotic
tilts. We doff our cap to the hospitable
phase of Decatur life, and especially to that
earnest old gentleman, mine host of Kirk
patrick Iun. Throngn the kindness of this
gentleman, we had the pleasure of a drive of
2:40 speed, behind gallant steed, to the airy
and cosy cottage home of E. C.; and then an
other Jehu seized the reins, and, Phcebus,
what a driver! In less time than it requires
this blunderbuss of a pen to write it, we were
scanning the myriads of perch and front in
Colouel Alston’s fish pond—delighted to wit
ness the snccess of pisciculture so abundant
ly demonstrated. Returned home fishily en
thused. Glad to note the unbounded popu
larity of the Herald “all along the line."
Its manly and impartial and able handling of
subjects of public interest justifies the popu
larity. Besides, it is the “Patrons” paper,
and \*e hope every brother will subscribe for
it. Random.
THROUGH COWETA TO TROUP.
THE CROPS FIXE AND PROMISING.
Grantville, Ga., July 9, 1873.
To the Editors of the Herald:
I passed through the most of Coweta and
Troup county a tew days ago and I never saw
crops look better. Most of the cotton was
clean and corn looked splendid. The wheat
crop is tolerably good in this section of the
country. Yours, etc.,
Snatch.

HOMT. INSTITUTIONS— EDUCATE YOUB CHILDREN
AT HOME - GOOD ADVICE.
Long, graphic descriptions of school exer
cises fill the papers, both in the country and
in the cities.
Never, in the history of Georgia, was there
a more flattering account given of the flour
ishing condition of her schools, from the State
line, north, to the sands of her sonthern sea
board. There can no longer exist any doubt
of the fact, that Southern minds are adapted
to teaching, and that the youth of the South
i a.i become scholars. The question of most
importance to ns,| is not whether men
educated upon Sonthern soil can teach, not
whether children born of Southern parents
can learn, but shall they be educated at home
or sent off to some other State? Permit us to
say that we are of those w ho believe in home
institutions.
We are for home institutions. What we
mean by this is, let Georgians patronize her
own colleges and universities. There are
none better in the South. Our State Univer
sity at Athens is an honor to the State, a
blessing to her sons, and a power felt and re
spected all over the State. Why should we
send our sons and daughters to Tennessee,
Virginia and North Carolina to be educated,
when it can be done at borne in Georgia ?
There is no plausible answer. So in regard
4* onr high schools, academies, etc. Let ev-
*ry commnn tj sustain its own school. This
is the best policy.
