Their latest semblance of virtue is 1 in a decree from the Board of Excise to shut : up the beer gardens on Sunday. This seems wise and commendable viewed from the higher j American standpoint; but the truth is, these ! resorts are so much a part of German life that » , t m i it is questionable whether it is wise or prac ticable to suppress them. The average Aweri- r. TJa can seeks diversion in gin mills, and is put to Telegraphic Cream and J>o- ; bed in hi6 bootgf perchance, at the public ex- • cr* s *11 pense. The nverage Gerinan takes his wife hemian SkintmilK. or sweetheart to the beer garden, quaffs a few mugs of his national beverage, and goes — * home like a gentleman. His pastimes may . naP ....... not be the most refined, and is unseemly to FIRE CRACKERS AND FRIE WATER, orthodox eyes, but it seldom leads to disturb- ance, or ends in degradation; for the Germans here and everywhere are the most industrious, “The Bucktails of Tammany.” orderly and intelligent of our working classes, and are becoming a large element among our capitalists. There were forty- three fires, a great many fights and two or three murders, and this is about all i know of the day’s doings woith mentioning. The notable event of the (lay, as recorded in the j, was A MEETING OF THE SACHEMS THE UNWASHED BOYS. If the average men and women of the time are getting demoralized, there would seeru to be some hope of Young America, if we may judge of a juvenile gathering ot working boys at Cooper Institute last night. Several hundred youngsters under twenty, met to dis cuss their grievances; to organize a labor bureau, and to appeal to the city for more free baths and more room to play ball! It was urged that Boston has seventeen free baths, while New York has only two, and these are so monopolized by the boot blacks, J Jno. T. Grant, president; Perino Brown, cash* NO. H. A re union caucus ot the leaders of tbe Southern Bights and Union parties, between whom a feud of gTeat bitterness had existed, was held in Atlanta, and, in referring to it, Edward Y. It - - - - 6 - 1 remains to be aeeu whether the American people value party success enough to get down cn their marrow bones to mongrelism, to win it, and whether they can win it by such humiliation! This Tammany Hall episode may have been accidental, but it is none the l6ss disgusting. There re unusual hopeful ness and courage among sagacious Dem ocrats.
