The subject of a city hospital has engaged the atten
tion of a number of opr heat citizens for a long time.
Various efforts have been mads at different times to
get this matter in a working shape, bnt always from
some cause or other it has been permitted to die out
without any material good being effected.
The organization known as the Atlanta Hospital As
sociation is composed of a body of leading citizens,
who have organized as a Board of Trustees under a
charter recently obtained. At the meeting for organi
zation they appointed a most benevolent and accom
plished young lady of thia city, (Miss Nellie Peters,)
who had been mainly instrumental in originating and
forwarding the movement, to raise contributions In
connection with such other ladies as she might select.
This committee of ladies has been organized and are
now at work, but find that the people say they "know
nothing about tt;” "do not know whether it will suc
ceed or not;’’ "want more light’on the subject"think
the City Council ought to build the hospital," etc.
The facta are: that it is a purely benevolent institu
tion which those having it in charge purpose to es
tablish, and is to be in the hands, as a board of trus
tees, of such men as L.~E. Bleckley, John H. James,
E. E. Hawson, Gen. A. C. Garlic "ton, John H. Flynn,
Dr. J. M. Bering. Colonel. J M. Patton, Geo. W. Adair,
General A. Austell, J. R. Calloway, Dr. J. H. Logan,
and others who3e names we do not now recollect
They have been trying to get a hospital for ten years
without avail, and now have a favorable opportunity
of purch&sirg property well adapted to the purpose,
upon the most favorable terms and at a comparatively
trifling cost.
It is a crying shame upon a city cf thirty thousand
people, tbit there is not a tingle hospital bed, for citi
zen or stranger, within its limits.
Vfc hope the philanthropic people who have taken

changes, all done up nicely, a package which we take
to be a pattern for some portion of a lady’s dress, bnt
what part we cannot decide. It is composed of an old
copy of the Montgomery Advertiser, chipped and
scolloped all over and tailed off with an adver
tising page of the Montgomery Journal. It ia ems
phatically an Alabama production. If it is intended
for a lady’s dress, the other three sections will have
to be gneeaed at, and if thia pattern is life-size, the
lady for whom it was intended would make money by
attaching herself to Norman’s museum, now musing
on Decatur street. There are two side pieces accom
panying the main piece, one of which looks like a pat
tern for a fur tippet, and the other a model
for a bed room slipper. After some time lost

"A HONK FOR THE SICK."
To the Editors of the Herald:
As the ladies of different religious denominations
are trying at this time to collect money for a hospital
to relieve the sufferings of our indigent sick, it may
be well to say a word to the public on this subject.
It you remember, ttet winter when an earnest effort
was made to induce our city council to appropriate
two thousand doDars for this purpose, they refused to
give one cent, and are now sending cripples and invalids
to either the station or alms house.
A Hospital Association, composed of some of our
most prominent and benevolent citizens, has obtained
a charter from the Supreme Court, and are now trying
to make a payment of two thousand dollars on a house
and a large lot. which are offered at a very reasonable
pries, snd will suit in every way for s "home for the
sick." • *■'*■* * ” ,w *
The gentleman of the Association have appointed
ladies from different churches to aid in this most im
portant matter.
Shall we allow another winter to see hundreds of
sick human beings perishing for the care and medical
attention they should receive ? No—shame upon ns
if we do-God has prospered our beautiful city, so
let us provide forth* sick and needy.

seals of the through cars, he discovered one of them
broken, and knew some thief had been Lntlerizing

and shoved it to and fastened it. Thus he had his game
securely caged. Mr. Jackson has had a varied
experience In the trapping line—he has tolled wild hogs
into an enclosure and shut the gate—he has taken a
hand in taming young colts—he he* chased flocks of
goats out of an old building, and helped to load
with wild and ungovernable young steers; but he
does not believe that he has ever heard as much ca
