NO VAHLAC—SHE LOCKS HESS ELF IX HEB
ROOM AND V OLCNTAIULT ABSTAINS
FROM EATING UNTIL BEDUCET)
TO A LINING SKELETON.
From the New York Son.
A foor-story brown-stone boose at 306 West
Fonrteenth street, is occupied by Mrs. Key-
barn, who keeps boarders sod lets famished
rooms. About three months ago a woman
called and asked to see the vacant rooms.
She seemed to be sboat forty yeas old, end
was neatly dressed. She gave her name fw Flor
ence Francis, and said she was a dressmaker,
and had no relatives or friends in this city.
Where she lived prerkms U> this, or what
bad^^-i tb, a mints of tilt life, is not known,
^fat she did not give her real name, however,
is probable, bat the motive for concealing ner
identity, if she had any object other than the
gratification of a caprice, nobody has as yet
foand oat. A famished back room oo the
third floor was shown her, and she took it,
paying $10 for the first month in a4vsnce.
t he next day she had a trank and same cSfcer
things brongbt to the hoaeo by a carman,
and from that time was an inmate. She
seemed to have enough work to keep her
busy, sometimes taking it from the shops
and doing it in her room, bat usually working
at the residences of chance employers at her
trade of dressmaking. Her meals were
mostly obtained where she worked, bat she
sometimes boiled tea in her room over a
small gas stove that she had brought with
her. She hod no visitors except those who
called on errands connected with her work,
and did not mingle mach with the other in
mates of the house.
A RELIGIOUS MONOMANIAC.
The little intercourse that Hiss Francis cas
ually had with the family created the impres
sion that she woe morose and eccentric. Hiss
Keybnra, the young daughter of the landlady,
says thst the woman seemed to be “a little
wild on religion.’’ She went to church three
times every Sanday, often attending the Meth
odist church in Jane street, bat changing
about among all the others on the west side.
She often met Miss Keyburn in the hall,
and upon those occasions almost always
broached religions topics, quoting odd texts
of Scripture, and otherwise confirming the
general opinion among the inmates of the
house as to her remarkable eccentricity. Miss
Keyborn is also inclined to set Mis3 Francis
down as particularly obstinate, and inclined
to intentionally annoy the lodgers. She paid
her rent promptly, however, and did not
make herself so objectionable as to furnish
any just excuse for her ejection. She worked
steadily, dressed respectably, and, as the
months passed, her oddities gradually ceased
to cause remark. She revealed no motive for
self-destruction, but that she meditated such
an act was evinced in remarks whieh attracted
no attention at the time, but whose signifi
cance is now apparent.
“If you should find me dead someday,”
she once said to Miss Keybnrn, “yon mustn't
mind it”
THE ATTEMPTED STARVATION.
About a week ago, possibly a little more.
Miss Francis shat herself in her room, only
coming ont once or twice after that to get wa
ter. Mrs. Keyburn is certain that she did not
open the door after Saturday lost. Her fail
ure to go out to church on Sunday excited
comment, but her sealnaion was then forgot
ten for a few daya When it was finally
mentioned, her habitual strangeness seemed
to sufficiently account for the new freak, and
nobody thought of making aa investigation.
It was known that she was in the habit of
boiling tea over her gas stove, and it vras al
so surmised that she was cooking for her
self.
“I guess she is fasting,” said one boarder,
jokingly; “she said the other day she thought
every Christian ought to fast"
Finally, when the woman had beeu self-
imprisoned six days, and, as it subsequently
transpired, without eating a moathtul, the
landlady’s husband became alarmed. He
went several times to her door and rapped, as
others had previously done, but could elicit
no response. Growing more confirmed in
his suspicion that something had happened to
the queer lodger, be determined to force open
the door. This was a little past midnight
yesterday morning. Placing his knee against
the locked door, he pressed against it with
all his strength, and it flew open.

tin last Monday on St. Charles street, and his
life threatened, be thought it but prudent to
prepere himself for an emergency in case
he should be again tackled. This he
did by procuring a six-shooter, which
he had with him when be rode
to the Lake laat evening. He re
lates having had a difficulty about fire years
ago with McCormack one day at the Wash
ington Street Cemetery, when the latter took
the port of a man whom be (Jerrett) was
chastising for insulting a lady whom he was
driving out. On this occasion Jerrett was
pretty badly choked by the deceased, but
since that time no words have passed between
them until yesterday, when they met, and
when Jerrett was assaulted with the shovel.
He alleges that when he saw the man ap
proaching him with the shovel, he said to
him, “Don’t do that Martin;” but tbo de
ceased called him a coward and a a n of a
b—h, and followed the abuse by the blow,
whereupon he drew bis pistol and fired in
self-defense, believing that his life was in im
minent danger, and that it was the only means
of saving himself. In relating the circum
stance Jerrett was much affected, and shed
tears freely, and lamenting tho fetal affair
as only a man could who felt deeply the great
misfortune that hod befallen him. Jerrett,
who is also a hackman, is represented as a
steady and good man, and well thought of by
all who know him, a fact that was very gene-
rlly spoken of a few days ago, when the man

street.
The deceased, though a hack-driver, vasn
man who had resided for about thirty years in
our city, and is said to have been exceedingly
well to do—in fact being worth over fifty thou
sand dollars.
It was at first the impression that the affair
might have been caused by the parties being
in liquor, but that, it is alleged, was not the
case, as neither of the men was at the time in
the least intoxicated.

It was dark in the room, and he groped his
way until he had lighted the gas. The light
revealed a sight that fixed him for a moment
where he stood. In a cnair by the window
sat Florence Francis, but so terribly changed
that he could scarcely recognize her. 8he
was but little more than a skin-covered skele
ton. Her head lay beck listlessly, snd her
eyes were hollow and staring. She did not
stir at his approach, and at first he thought
that she was dead. An examination, however,
proved that she still lived, but that life would
very soon have beeu extinct. She made no
reply when he spoke to her, end ehe did not
move a muscle at his tonch. She wore her
night dress only, and her wssted arms and
neck added to the ghastliness of her appear
ance. Her hair was dishevelled, and her
bony fingers clutched the chair upon which
she sat.
HEB LIFE POSSIBLY SAVED.
Mr. Keyburn at one aroused the inmates of
the house, and called the policeman who was
patroliug Fonrteenth street. A doctor was
sent for, and Miss Francis was lif:ed to the
bed, where she lay, apparently nnconscions.
Her lower jaw hung hopelessly down, and herl
eyes were still staring vacantly. The police-
man hurried to the Charles street police sta
tion, where an ambulance bad lackily just ar
rived, having been sent for to take a broken
legged boy to the hospital. Dr. Campbell was
i n charge ol it.and he hod it driven to the house
in Fourteenth street The starved woman was
at once taken to Bellevue, where she re
mains in a critical condition. Dr. Campbell
thinks that the chances of death or recovery
are about equal. Stimulants have been care
fully administered; and she seems to have
gained strength to a slight extent, but not
sufficient to raise her head from the pillow.
Her thoughts wander constantly dnring her
waking moments, and in the delirium caused
by starvation she matters unintelligibly.
Her old propensity for quoting Scripture
shows itself. While the Ban reporter stood
at her bedside she repeatedly said, in a voice
just above a whisper, “They told Job to enrse
God and die.” Onee. for a moment, the
seemed sensible, and, in answer to an iequi-
ry, said ber name was Stone.

the teronauts will occasionally throw over in

marking tte direction they are traversing.
Note of these should also be made. In case
the balloon gives out before it reaches laud,
