groom thirteen.

against the law it ought to be.
One of the complaints filed by Mrs. Patter- |

Thackeray’s People.
John Etitc a Cooke, in Hearth-sad Hiuie.
I was talking one day with the late Mr.
Tbackeray--a most excellent, genial gentle
man and companion—in reference to authors
and books, and most especially about his own
books, which he spoke of with lraukness and
unreserve, ns though they had been written
by a third person. One or two things be said
which sir me k mo loucib.y at tbe time, and
have remained in iny memory affording me
food for reflection. \V« were speaking ot the
sketch. -“Mr. Deuceaee and bis Priends" (I
think, that is the title), iu which appears tbe
finished rascal and sereaolx smiling scoun
drel, tbe Earl of Crabs.
“ Where did von meet with the original of
the ‘Earl of Crabe,’ Mr. Thackeray ? " was my
query. .
“ 1 never met

** Yon drew him from your imagination ? w
*• I suppose
“ He is certainly the greatest scoundrel in
literature, I think, not excepting Lord Steyne
or any.”
Mr. Thackeray acquiesced in this moral or
immoral eminence attributed to the Earl,
mused a moment, mailed in a good-natured
way, and said:
“I really don’t know where 1 got all these
rascals in my books. I certainly never lived
with such people."
That is the first suggestive observation. I
shall defer my moral reflection nntil I repeat
the second.
We same to talk ol “Vanity Fair" and the
excellent Miss Becky Sharp, of whom Mr.
Thackeray spoke with evident aelf-cougr&tH-
lation. She had “ mode his fortune." he said,
and be added frankly that he thought he had
nev«r done anything better than tbe descrip
tion of the manner iu which Madam Becky
Crawley "came down ’ to tbe lowlife ol Bo
hemia, after her epoch of social elevation as
the friend of Lor^. Steyne.
“There is one mystery abont Becky which
haa always puzzled me. I oaid.
“What is that ?"
“Nearly at the end ol the book there is a
picture of old Joe Sedley, gouty, night-capp
ed, and sealed iu bin cany-chair, while behind
a cortaiu stand* tbe ghu-tJy. glaring Becky,
grasping a dagger.”
“Yet.'’
“Beneath this picture is the single word
CiylemneaUa."
Mr. Thackeray nodded.
“Did Becky kill him ?”
Mr. Thackeray remained silent for a mo
ment, aa tbe novelist says;a slow smile dawn
ed upon hia face; he aesumed a reticent and
secretive expression ot countenance, and at
length replied is a confidential tone:
“I don f t know.**
