Improvement in Bailroap Iron.—We were ehown
yesterday by Mr. J. 8. Roark, of this city, so improve
ment in railroad iron, for which he has just received
a patent. The chair or base of the bar is grooved on
top, and the surface or cap of the iron ia tongued to
at In this grove, and bolted with pins. It forms a con-
ionous bar all the way, and appears to be a good
hlng. Ten miles of track can be repaired with tbis
lew iron quicker than one with the present style. We
mderatand that General McRae, of the State Road, in-
lorses this patent, and believes it will work a revolu
tion in railroad bars.
Oa yesterday a Herald reporter, while on a tour of
inspection, called at the establishments of R. It. Psyne
& Co. and EUas. May k Co., to tee to what extent
the* houaea were offensive. Since wa taw investi
gated the matter, ws mnatconfesa that foie mut^i
surprised at the olusifeatloa imult $y fie ^ty Coun-
of the junk bnstnegs, eepueigip
Disde cognisant of the Bad that a great many of
the strongest houaea in the city deal in the ■suhx line of
goods. While talking to Mr. Richard Payne, he stated
they received consignments of rags, etc., daily from
the leading bouses of Atlanta; also that a good portion
of their goods were bought from tbs merchants in the
city, mostly from wholesale and commission mer
chant*. They often had consignments from M. C.
k i. P. Kiser, A. C. k B. P. Wyly. Moore k Marsh,
and many other hoiaet oi equal standing. Hooce,
we candidly sta’.e that it does not seem fair that only
those who are known as junk dealers should feel the
penalty, while many men who deal in the same goods,
but are classified under another line of business hbonld
1 HE ROLLING MILLS.
For instance the Bolling MUI Company are large
junk dealer*, who purchase over $100,000 of actap
iron. And yet they could not be removed outside the
limits of the city. Citizens who bars expended large
sums and paid for the privilege of dealing in these
goods would be literally ruined. Alter going through
the entire establishment we unhesitatingly state that
we visited many much more offensive places in town.
There are drains, sewers, and closets that smell a *hou-
fand times worsd than the vilest odor that tliia rr-
poxter sniffed on the breezes that play around the
junk shops. And If the city authorities propose to
clear up the city and prepare it for the dainty noses
of the anti-junk sbopitea, it stems to us it would oe
better to commence abating the common sewerage
colossal nuisances before they open an attack upon an
important and growing branch of the city’s commerce*
Tbs business of the junk-shops will be, by the next
year, at 1« ast two and a half million of dollars. The
great majority of their goods are waste, and would be
worthless were it not foe these establishment*. The
profits that accrue from the sale of tbis otherwise
worthless material ia spent in the etiy in extending
their bu iuesa and making improvements. Wo are
told that Elsas, May k Co., have over $40,000 worth
of machinery in th* ir paper manufactory. Payne A
Co., are now fitting up a suitable house wherein to
prosecute their business, the increase of which len
ders it necessary for them to move from their present
place i f business.

United rftutr* Di.liirl Court.
HON. JSO. F.R.-K1NE, JUDGE I'UF.riJlx.N
Up to the hour that the telegraph office closed lari
night, no inlormatiou whatever had been received In
the city concerning the movements of Mr. T. J. Phil
lips sod party. It is known, however, that the party
paused Eufaula, Ala , yesterday enroute for Neal’s
Lauding, FU , but beyond this nothing hai been re
ceived.
We are consequently still ignorant of the result of
the trip, and are unable to inform onr readers if a duel
lias been fought or a retraction made. We are satis-
fl*d that either nothing baa been done, or tbe party
have not yet returned to any po nt of telegraphic
communication, a* we have a special correspondent
with the party who will s»ud us the earliest aud ful
lest report of the result of the mieting.
On yesterdiy there was absolutely no news attaina
ble. We telegraphed to Eufaula, Fort Gaines, Colum
bus, sad eltewheie, for specials on the subject, but
could get nothing. Our reporter also called upon
Mr Phillips last night, but he had not received any
information what-ever of the whereabouts of his *oi».
From the fact that the party pasted Eufaula going
to Florida, it is safe to conclude that all • fforts at an
amlcabla adjustment of the ma ters at issue had failed.
If, therefore, a duel was fought in Florida,
yesterday morning, (and one canid not have be»*n
fought before), it is not at ail *ur ( nisiug that nothing
has yet been heard of the result. The b >it returning
would not reach the scene of meeting before evening,
and perhaps not until night, and rent* quentiy, noth
ing of a reliable character iienlLe expected before
this morning. On yesterday many wild rumors were
afloat in this city of one of the principles having been
killed, but notone of tbc»e stories were based upon
any reliable intelligence.
Unless tbe parties have been arrested iu Florida, tbe
Herald of to-morrow will doubtless contain a full
and authentic report.
