California Banditti. from the Sen Frmucioco Chronicle, 3>th nit.] Holustxji, Aog. 28.-—The princi}>al topic of conversation in town is the daring robbery and murder committed at Snyder's store, at Tree Finos, on Tnesday evening, by Tibnrcio Yasquez and his gang of cut-throata. The excitement is still as intense as on yesterday. To-day I visited the scene of the tragedy and interviewed two of the principal witnesses, front whom I obtained the following complete acconnt of the transaction, which for audao- ■ and fiendishness is almost without par ity ani allel: I. MORRISON. D. M. BAIN. A. MORRISON. MORRISON, RAIN 4 C0„ WHOLESALE HARDWARE MERCHANTS, 50 WHITEHALL STREET ATLANTA, GEOR G. W. JACK, STEAM O-A.HSrZD'Sr AND Will guarantee to sell as low as can be bought elsewhere. ATLANTA PAPER MILLS JAMES ORMOND, Pro’pr. About 7 o’clock on Tuesday evening two Mexicans lode up to Snyder’s store from the direction of Panoche valley and the New Idria mine. Dismounting from their horseSi they entered the store and eugaged in conver sation with John Utzeratb, Snyder’s clerk. In a few moments five more rode up and dis mounted. Three of the gang—one of them being the nofed Tiburcio Yasquez—remained on the ontside, while the four others entered the store, leveled their pistols at the inmates and compelled them to lie down, after which all were tied. Two little sons of L. C. Smith, comiDg in at this juncture, were ordered to lie down. One ot them was tied, but the other was allowed to remain untied. The robbers then went through the store, appro priating all the cash and clothing, provisions and tobacco. The parties on the floor, five or six in all, were searched, and the money, watches and rings taken. While this was going on in the store, Vasquez was inaugu rating * A CARNIVAL OF BLOOD on the outside. A Portuguese sheep herder, known as Martin, who bad put up his flocks and quartered at Davidson’s hotel, immedi ately adjoing Snyder’s store, not knowing the character of the new-comers, attempted to en ter the store, but was ordered to stop ou the threshold by Yasquez. The Portuguese, who could not speak English, paid no attention to the order, and reached the steps, when Vas quez fired a pistol ball which took effect in the herder’s mouth, causing him to fall. At tempting to rise, he was shot again through the left side of the neck, and death instantly put an end to his sufferings. Mr. Haley, a teamster in the employ of A. R. Grogan, who was in the road, wus ordered to lie down, and on attempting to urgue the question was knocked down by a powerful blow from Vasquez’s revolver, and remained in a state of insensibility for some time. George Bedford, a teamster (working for Ezra Beach, of Hollister, during the latter’s absence on a wedding tonr,) at the time of the initiation of the shooting, was occnpid in at tending to his team, which stood in front of the store. Yasquez, the leader of the gang, who did all the shooting, and guarded the ap proach to the store, approached Bedford and ordered him to lie down. The unlortonate mao. who was troubled with deafness, did not hear the order, but apparently realizing his ; danger, started for the. stable on a run. Just ' as he reached the building, a shot from Vas- j quez’s pistol passed through his heart, killing ! ltll , him instantly. When found afterward, he lay near tbe stable door, his hands clutching tightly a wisp of hay, his face horribly dis torted by the agonies of the death struggle. W T hen the shooting commenced, L. Scher- 1 t rer, a blacksmith, was in front of Snyder’s p Knopimon nf “Nows” wn l-flffir store, in the road. He atarted to rnn, nod 10r Specimen OI JVCWS, we leier Yasquez fired at him, but the shot whistled harmlessly by, and Scherrer gained entrance to Davidson's Hotel. Mr. Davidson, his wife and brother-in-law were inside, and Scherrer urged them to instantly shut the door, which was then open, a® their lives were in deadly peril. Just as Mrs. Davidson was about to do as he requested, one of the gang stationed at the door of the store yelled out: “Close the door and keep it closed, and you shan’t be harmed.” Mrs. Davidson had got the door partly closed, when Vesquez, who must have been infuriated by drink, rushed up and fired through the door, the bul let passing through Mr. Davidson’s heart, causing instant death. His wife, who stood | t-v^\ 0 /~i I directly back of him, received his falling body JlJVm W JlUj & VTJLl.Vy Jufe A • 1 In her arms, and together they fell to the floor, j Scherrer then started for the second story, and ( from a window anxiously observed the farther i movements of the outlaws, who were now do- - voting themselves entirely to robbery. Mr. Snyder was one of tbe men bound in the store, and was ordered, under penalty of death, to produce all the available cash and notes on his premises. He gave the robbers $500 in coin and a number of drafts, alter [ which he was again bound and placed upon j the floor. iiuuiiuu u uuaui juviuuuuuij DEPARTURE OF THE MURDEROUS OANG. Having secured all the provisions, clothing | . m , wm emiiri t and tobacco that they wanted, the robbers A1AAIH IA, UI^UlilxlA, started for the stable and stole seven horses, three belonging to Ezra Beach, two to Camp- I bell and two to Snyder, after which they de- j camped in tbe direction of the New Idria I mines. The scene that met . InGcll, £ lOUT, Sttg&T CUT6& SAIY1S, their gaze was calculated to strike horror to the stoutest heart. The Portuguese lay dead , BACON, LARD, ICE-CURED MEATS, AND on the threshold. Nothing has yet been beard ot their move ments, though the gang was reported to have baited yesterday in the Hernandez Valley, forty miles southeast of Hollister, at the head waters of the San Benito. They are probably making for their old rendezvous in Canton Canon, twelve miles sonth of the New Idria mines, a wild and almost inaccessible place in the mountains, and where a tew bold men could hold their gronnd successfully against a small army of pursuers. Cantus Canon has been the camp of Vesqnez and his gang for years, and was formerly the principal and safest camp of Joaquin Murietta and his mur derous outlaws. Bishop Qcintarp's Position. - The Jackson (Term.) Herald publishes a letter which was read to St. Lnke’s Church, Sunday, by tbe pastor, from Bishop Quintard, in which he says: “As some of yonrgood people may have been disturbed by these reports, I wish to state plainly: 1■ l am not a member of the ‘Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament,’ aud never have been. 2. X have never observed the 'Festival of Corpus Cbristi, nor any other festival not laid down in tbe Calendar of the Book of Common Prayer. 3. I have never celebtafed Muss, nor administered the Holy Communion, In other than the words laid down in tb4 Book of Common Prayer. On the occasion referred to In tbe article in the Appeal, the service was particularly plain. There was no music even.” Mr. And Mrs. Barney Williams are now re siding in their villa, at Bath, L. I.
