An Awful Scourge. TEEItlBIX MALIGNANCE OF YELLOW FEVER AT SHEEVEPOBT, LA.—THIRTY DEATHS THURSDAY, ETC. New Orleans, Sept. 12, 1873. A dispatch from Shreveport to*day to\Iessrs. Nast & Hodgeson says the city is in great need of help. The yellow fever is of a ma lignant type, and does not yield readily to treatment. There is great scarcity of people to attend the sick. Le R. Simmons, President Howard Association. A dispatch from W. A. L’Homedien, Mar shall, Texas, superintendent ot telegraph, to Superintendent Flannery, of ibis city, says: “Everything is in great confusion in Shreve port. There were thirty deaths there yester day. The lever is reported worse to-day.” The Picayune has the following: We have been permitted to copy the following private letter from Shreveport, Louisiana, September 7, 1873: Dear Jack—We are now passing through an awful scourge. The yellow fever has come and, like some awful black pAll, thrown its folds about ns, spreading fright, terror and death amongst ns. The town is nearly de populated by stampede and sickness. There has been, as near ns I can ascertain up to date, about &ixty people dead, and a great number sick. There is one awful character istic about the sickness, and that is that no one as yet has recovered. Some are what they call doing well, while others die. One day yon hear of a case doing ns well as could be expected, the next thing a corpse is awaiting the hearse. Ou the point of malignant fatality it surpasses any yellow fever ever known here. It appears as if the fell monster ever gets its pestilential fangs fastened on its victim, it never lets go its fatal grip until the poor victim is stiff and stark dead. A few cases at first dropped dead in the streets belore reaching a house. These cases, however, have been rare. None of our particular friends are yet dead. The only ones in danger now are the Misses Jordan, both of whom are very low. We have organized a Howard Association, aud they are doing a great deal of good. The following are all the dead that I know of to the present time : Mr. Bell, the carpen ter, and his wife; Cashell, the druggist; Mr. Mundy, of the firm of Mundy A Collins; Jim Anderson, Hank Smith, two of Mr. Griswold’s children, Mr. Craig, besides many strangers. The following are very sick, Col. Cummings, Dr. Kendall, Bard Ogeline, Judge Lerney, two Misses Jordan; Mr. Alexander, the law yer; G. J. Alexander, the tailor, and Billy Marshal. Of the fever Clay says: It is different from any yellow fever he ever read of or saw. He continues: I will move away. One of the at tendant inconveniences of the fever is a thor ough embargo on the cars. They will let no one go. The town is, in the way of business, dead. P. S. September 8.—There are a great many new cases reported this morning. Mr. Joe Howell is dead. AN EXTRAORDINARY THEORY. Little Bock, September 12.—Several par- lies who left Shreveport yesterday arrived here this evening. They report the yellow fever on the increase. Every stage leaving that city for this is crowded with terror- stricken people. The son of Mr. Boooks, proprietor of the Southern Hotel at Shreve port, who arrived here yesterday en route for St. Louis, received a telegram this evening ainouncing the death of bis father from the fever. It is thought that the removal of the Red river raft has considerable to do with the epidemic. The subject ot coinage is again becoming generally discussed, for leally coppers and bad dollars are a dreadful—indeed, a disgrace ful—nuisance. All the ciYihzcd countries, from time immemorial, have had a coinage for the purpose of barter. The only real coinage belonging to the great Chinese empire is copper cash, about twelve hundred of which go t > a dollar, and these, having a bole in the centre, are r>trung together like beads. History tells os of an ancient Empe ror who had an iron coinage made, in order to check avarice among his people, ard certainly this ultra-barbaric method of exchange is very nearly as incon venient. To carry any quantity of Chinese cash is a physical impossibility; wheel-bar rows are constantly seen going tbrongh the settlement heavily laden with strings of cash. In consequence of this cumbeisome method of exchange, foreigners have had to introduce the Spanish dollar, which have subsequently been for the most part replaced by the Mexi can dollar, and as these aie not legal or cur rent coin of the realm, as sovereigns are in England, a host of villains have manufactured dollars, some only elightly less in value to the Mexican, but other makers, with In dia-rubber-like consciences, have made some of iron with a coating of silver, some of brass, copper, and a judicious admixture of differ ent metals; to say nothing of an extensive system of electro-plating that is carried on by certain rascals. A feeble attempt on the part Of the Colonial Government of Hong-Kong to introduce a better coinage was made, and an extensive mint erected in the colony; but, strange to say, from mismanagement and m- compvtency on the part of somebody or other, the establishment did not work well, and w. s finally closed and sold to the Japan ese, who, it must be added, soon erected a beautiful mint at Osaka, and placed a compe tent staff of native and loreigu officials to woik it, and now the Japanese are turning out their dollars by the thonsnnd. The an noyance and inconvenience caused by having dollars in circulation of different value is in- describal le, to say nothing of the loss it occa sions many local trades, and not the least of the evils is, that it necessitates every payment being examined by a native skilled in the touch and value of dollais. Copper cash has sufficed them for 2,000 or 3,000 yeurs, and it might just as well continue to do so for another similar period. It is contrary to na tive instinct and tradition to alter or improve anything. Therefore, in our own interest, as well as in theirs, the matter of a new coinage should be insisted on.
