There is usually a public square set apart for a market, well paved with stone, but without even a shed or public stall upon it. The market people j merely set their baskets down and stand alongside of them, though some bring stalls j with them, and have large umbrellas. A 1 kinds of meat is obtained from the provision stores, which are very numerous, aud are fitted up with great elegance. To look in at an American provision store on a warm day is | enough to spoil one's appetite, but the Ger- j man provision store makes a man hungry to look at it. The meat is displayed on white marble slabs, the windows are ornamented with specimens of meat, sausages and other \ articles, with a little iountain playing ) over an urn full of gold fish. There is an air [ of cleatidiness and sweetness about the whole i establishment, and the doty of salesman is usually performed by a bright, rosy-cheeked lass, who handles the weapons of her profes sion with all the skill of a professor. We al ways make it a rule to 6top and look in at these neat little establishments, and wonder why it is that we, with our superabundance of ice, cannot preseot similar stores. Fruits and vegetables are not eaten here as with us. With the exception of pears, plums and cher ries, there is nothing in the markets, and these are in such limited quantities that one of our fruit dealers at the Lexington or Marsh market would monopolize the whole stock of fered this morning to a population of 40,000 people. A pound cf plums was an extensive sale to any one purchaser. Peaches are a curiosity, and are hard and sour. They are always sold at so many kreutzers a piece, and never by the measure. Tiuly, the American tourist deprives himself of many ot the joys of life by spending his summer iu Europe. Persian Barbarity.—Sir John Malcolm, writing from Persia in 1828, describes the case of a chief named Zal Khan, who, coming into disfavor with the reigoing monarch, was condemned to hive his eyes put out. Failing in bis appeal for a recall of this cruel sen tence, Zal Kahn “loaded the tyrant with curses, * and in rett rn Lis tongue was ordered to be cut out. Tbis order was imperfectly executed, aud the loss of half the member is reported to have deprived him of speech. Being afterward persuaded that if cut close he might be able to speak intelligently with the root, he submitted to the operation, and 6ubsevuently told bis own story to Sir John i Malcolm. These statements were long doubted, but j in 1857 they were fully confirmed by Sir John McNeill, whose inquiries iu Persia, where this mode of puuishment is common, led to the discovery of man3’ instances of a similar na ture. The belief is universal iu that country that incision of tbe tip of the tongue perma nently destroys the power of speech, while its removal at or near the root leaves the victim a chance of regaining the ability to again speak his mind. A young married friend tells a good joke on himself, perpetrated by a little three-year-old “ pride of the family.” She is the only pledge of love that has twined itself around the hearts i and affections of himself and wife. A few even ings since a minister visited the family and rc« mained nutil after tea. At the table the rev erend visitor asked the blessing, and the little one opened her eyes to the fullest capacity in startled wonderment. She could not under stand w hat bad been done, and it was with great persuasion that her mother could keep her quiet during the time they were at the ta- j ble. When they left it she walked up to the J minister, for whom she bad formed a great friendship, and, said : “What did you say at the table before we commenced eating ?’* “My little darling, I thanked God for his goodness iu giving us to eat, so that we might grow and be strong.” “ Papa don’t say that.” “ What does your papa say?” Papa says, ‘ Godle- mighty, what a supper !* ” Many of tbe Indian outbreaks may be at tributed to false reports spread by interested whites who are anxious for trouble in order that they may reap the profits incident to mil itary operations. ‘The citizens of Prescott, Arizona, were much excited recently over the announcement that the Tonto Apaches, to the number of six hundred, had deserted their reservation and taken to the mountains. Gen. Cook at once left headquarters for the Verde, and massacres and war were looked for. The Tontos failed, however, to commit any depre dations, and it was ascertained tbAt they had left their reservation because they had been ! informed that one of the Government inter preters was leading a force of Apaches from unotber reservation to attack them. On iearn- j ingtbat the Alarm was not well-founded they j at once returned to their quarters on the i Verde. J. G.
