New York, Sept 0,1873. I noticed in your journal a few weeks ago au editorial (loubl expressed regarding the in tention of the promoters of the great trans- Atlantic balloon expedition to really dispatch it acroes the Atlantic. From the first I have had no confidence in the thing. I know the j managers of the job to be shrewd newspaper men. ever ready to profit upon the credul.ty of the public. They are THE r. T. BABNUMS OF NEW8PAPERD0M. When Professor Wise failed to get funds in Boston to construct his air ahip, the clever Gocdsells evidently saw that here was a chance, by the expenditure of four or five thousand dollars, to get free advertising for the Daily Graphic in all the papers of the country, and probably their paper has been more extensively noticed in the past lew months than if they had laid out $30,000 in legitimate advertising. The Graphic itselt, you will remember I said in one of my letters, is a sheet of no literary merit, and REFLECTS NO CREDIT UPON MB. CBOLEY, the editor. The artistic work, however, liar- ring the illustrated advertising pull's for cos- | tomers, watering place hotels and race courses, is good, and the pictures only give | the paper any circulation.
