can be obtained at a small cost and less than three
hoars travel, if five thousand dollars and an effective
organization of nurses, together with s well devised
plan lor moving the unprotected, were to be brought
into active service, the panic and pestilence would
soon cease.
The cotton brokers of this city will telegraph their
contributions by money orders, through the Howard
Association of New Orleans.
The General Superintendent of the Western Union
Teiegrat h Company at Louisville telegraphs Presi
dent Orton as follows: ** The Howard Association re
ports twenty four deaths at Shreveport for the twenty-
four lours ending at G o’clock yesterday evening, and
two hundred and twenty since the 1st of September.
There appears to be no abatement of the disease, ex
cept for want of subjects. We have two operators
there now, and another leaves here to-night. One at
Pen ga ols, who recently had tho fever, will go if it is
necessary.”

Fuxther particulars from the Ironsides disaaater
ta~c been obtained from {asaengers and others. The
last boat did net leave in time to get far enough from
the ship before she went down, and was drawn in by
the whirlpool and swamped. The first beat which
left the steamer, containing mostly ladies, was cap
sized, and only one of the passengers succeeded in
reaching the shore. The second and third boats
reached the shore. Eighteen of the lost bodies have
been recovered, of which seven yet remain unclaimed,
who will be decently buried.
