lion, and he grew furiously jealous of his fel
low balloonist. He got iu the way of holding
himself *»loot from the enterprise, aud sulk
ing at his hotel, and liis son, who had a
grudge against the proprietors of tbe Graphic,
industriously applied himself to embittering
his father against them also. It was while
in this condition ot mind that the reporters
of rival papers, on mischief bent, sought the
professor and found him not unwilling to
pour forth his imaginary grievance into
their bosoms. Wheu sent for and asked to
explain why he had abused his employees,
aud cast discredit o*i the enterprise, he
was nervously anxious to sign letters
abandoned the cnteipn.se long ago.
Perhaps I am to blame iu this respect, but it ;
was at least au amiable weakness to hold ou
until the last minute in the hope that the
balloon might prove capable of making a
creditable start, even if it ended its career
and mine by letting me down in tbe middle of
the Atlantic Ocean. My faith in my theory ol
a great easterly current is now as strong as it
ever was, for it is based upon positive scien
tific facts. 1 am ready now, as I have been
ready for tbe last thirty years, to risk my life
in attempting to cross the Atlantic. All 1
demand is a leliable air ship.
